Personally, I have never seen any bad fanbases in real life, but online, thats a different ballpark entirely. Tbh its kinda hard to tell if they are joking or if thats how they really are, you can never tell without physical interaction. Pantera and Slayer fans can be really douchey and close-minded (to the point of shitting on anything that isn't their favorite band). Also Jinjer fans can be absolutely terrible (basically think Tool fans except they also like to get weird/creepy towards the vocalist). While they're nowhere close to metal I've always found Radiohead fans to be really irritating. In the past I've mentioned I'm not a big fan of them and find them overrated, only to get heavily disliked/downvoted, told I "must not like music then", lectured about how "someday you'll realize what makes them the best band ever", etc. Not to mention the insane amount of dickriding, to the point where these people act like they're more historically important and influential than classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or even the Beatles. If you ask me Power metal, Folk metal (if you stay away from the Black Metal side of it), and Melodeath (with a couple exceptions like Arch Enemy and In Flames) are probably the metal genres with the coolest fanbases.

Not sure about the worst but I can safely say the absolute best fanbase is Voivod fans. Fucking love them. Currently trying to become one. For most of my metal life, Voivod's been like a party that I was not invited to but everyone keeps telling me how awesome it was. I just listened to Angel Rat for the first time and I think I'm starting to get it.

This stuff makes me glad I grew up with the older punk community. The best thing it gave me is the “Kill Your Idols” and “No Gods No Masters” mentality. I like about half the bands you talk about here but some people wreck all the fun in music. It’s a shame because music is one of the greatest things humans have done.

coming from symphonic metal twitter, Nightwish fans are often absolutely insufferable obligatory "not a metal band" but Ghost fans have been absolutely rabid since one of their songs got tiktok viral - I think after a band reaches a certain level of exposure the crazies find each other and amplify the craziness but the absolute worst behaviour I've seen from "fans" is actually my favourite band, Moonspell. 99.9% of the fans are really nice, but the 0.1% elitists who are willing to send death threats to the band members and publicly mock them about their struggles, to the point that the band had to say something... yea idk

There is so much gatekeeping in regards to the extreme metal genres, like deathcore and grindcore. It makes me feel like I can't listen to other styles of metal without people saying that I'm "not a real deathcore fan". In terms of band fandoms, I can safely say that the Lorna Shore crowd is one of the most insufferable crowds I've heard the displeasure of being in. They will straight up hit you to get a front row spot.

I’m gonna say it, as much as I love Poppy, some of her fans are just like ST or Deftones fans, except somehow weirder. It’s more like Taylor Swift fans. Like, I get she litterally says it in one of her songs, but can we please not call her “mommy” in every comment section? No wonder her official posts come with locked one… That being said, I’m glad she has sort of comeback in terms of popularity, hope it lasts a while and she gets as much good from it.

I'm a fan of Cannibal Corpse but honest. The last two albums were slightly different than the cookie cutter approach Cannibal is known for, thank you Erik Rutan. The closest Slipknot came to death metal was IOWA and sorry folks they missed the bar.

As bad as Varg fans are, they're nothing compared to Grand Belial's Key "fans". I put them in quotations because I'm pretty sure most of them don't even care for the music, they just think it's so le edgy and based to listen to the racist band. As a fan of the music (I can't make out the lyrics without looking them up, which is a plus), I've found it better to just download their albums and not interact with any part of their fanbase in any way whatsover. Seriously, take a look at the comments section of one of their songs/albums if you want to die of cringe.

If you listen to the first two records of Slipknot’s discography you can definitely see why/how you are correct about the whole victim mentality thing. For me personally back when I was in that space, I was drawn to that music because of how isolated I felt. I didn’t believe that the entire world was out to get me, but it definitely felt like the entire world didn’t give a single f*ck about me, and like I said that’s much of what those two albums are about. It helped listening to that music because rather than sit around in distilled self-pity I started to think “f*ck everyone else if they don’t care then” Which isn’t a healthy mentality by any means, but I didn’t feel quite as bad. Long - drawn out way of saying for me I didn’t get that mentality because of the music, I was already that way and that’s what drew me to the music. I’ve moved past it but even still, whenever I’m fed up or feel like everything is going wrong it helps to throw on Iowa. For me it helps take all the bullsh*t in my head away. It’s such a cringe way of putting it but it kinda numbs me out a bit, at least in relation to my emotions

You forgot the worst group of all, the 'new' Metallica fans, as in the people who had no clue about metal and than when Metallica suddenly became super popular and super mainstream everyone suddenly became a metalhead because they started listening to new Metallica stuff. Now, I did intentionally put the new in quotation marks as which era exactly this refers to is debatable. The most snobbish and elitist of metal fans will argue that the Black Album was that point, other more reasonable people will say Load/Reload era or even St. Anger. Anything post St. Anger is a given. Basically any Metallica fan that doesn't care for(or even knows) their original 4 albums(or even 3 if you discount Kill 'Em All being Proto-Metallica so to speak) are a part of this group.

Haven't seen anything 'bad' in the metal world since I don't go to shows or really look at people's discussions online, though rap is a different story. I find it so weird how (and I'm sure this sentiment can be applied to all music) fans will argue objective fact about an artists' quality of music, but when it doesn't fit their agenda, argue "well it's all just, like, your OPINION". I HATE people who say music is all subjective just so they can yell "oh this band sucks, they're so dumb and stupid!" without backing up the claims just to turn around and argue against me taking the same piss out of what THEY like (cause if they're smart they won't tell me what bands/artists they like cause I'll find SOMETHING to criticize about if I'm feeling petty).

about the Slipknot genre debate, i was thinking about it some years ago & came up with Extreme Groove Metal. yes they're still (partly) nu metal but i've always thought their sound was far too heavy to be just that. i think i came up with it after comparing them to some other groove metal bands & it just made the most sense (to me, anyway).

As someone who has only recently been getting into Tool and Dream Theater (they’ve been my first exposure to metal considering I’m a 70s prog rock nerd), I have to actively remind myself not to read the comments sections under their songs on KZfaq haha

Honestly I love it when bands try new things because it helps the genre evolve, Like, fkr example there is some *KILLER* Extreme Queer Metal, but half the damn time it never gets noticed because *"Hur dur its not TRUEE NETALLL!!!!111"* like this happens across alot of the older metal bases where im positive most of the nembers of said band could qualify for Medicaid.

tool is one of those bands that i do enjoy quite a bit but i’ll never call myself a tool fan. i can only hear about the linguini sequence or whatever the fuck it is so many times before i want to throw hands.

Ngl the tick tick fan bases have really turned me off from bands like Lorna shore and Polyphia. I remember when they were cool up and coming bands, and was really fun to run into another fan of theirs and have a conversation. Now anytime I enter a place talking about metal on the internet, I’m bombarded with endless dickriding of Will Ramos, Alex Terrible, and Tim Henson.

I mean if its metal, Ghost has a terrible fanbase. They talk like Ghost is the best thing to ever happen to music and that Tobias Forge is a musical genius and the best musician of our time. Tobias is a guy who started a band with his friends and then took all the credit. Ghost's early music was great when they would work as a band but Tobias took all the credit. You can see in interviews that he struggles to play the easy riffs that he "invented". He's so pretentious and selfish. Also the sexualizing of people in masks is very strange. I can't imagine seeing all the very sexual fanart of you in a mask, especially since ghost has lost all anonymity. I used to be a ghost fan and unfortunately the fanbase ruined it for me.

I completely agree with Sleep Token fans. The band is not my cup of tea, but I did not expect so many of their fans to be as crazy defensive as they are. Prog fans in general can be a bit snobbish so seeing Tool and Dream Theater on this list isn't surprising, I like both bands but I agree on the fandom. I know not all Slipknot fans are like that, I'm one as well; but a lot of the younger fans are like that.

I remember when some shop similar to Primark released tshirt with Slipknot. And I read a lot of whining mostly from young fans. That every fan of Slipknot will look the same in this tshirt. I dunno. But I thought that wearing band t shirt wasnt meant to make you look different than any other fan 😂

I’ll say this in defense of Burzum and Burzum fans… … … … … Alright, with that out of the way, the history is what it is, but looking at it now, you can’t throw a rock in a black metal venue (don’t throw rocks in any venue) and not have it ricochet off of half a dozen bands that sound exactly like Burzum, and while that derivativeness isn’t normally a selling feature, it does raise the question of why people are standing so hard for a literal Nazi murderer when there’s nothing being brought to the table that 9,000 other bands aren’t also doing. Varg is intrinsically tied to the genre’s history, but Nathan Bedford Forest, George Wallace, and Jefferson Davis are all intrinsically tied to American history, and I’m still going to look askance at anyone waxing poetic about how great they were.
