I think it's always different when the child becomes an adult. Her fear probably stemmed from the fact that if you didn't do your pet duties right, then she would have to step up to do it and she couldn't bring herself to. Now that you're an adult she trusts you to look after it and even if she helps now, it's probably because she's learnt from you and is confident because of that. Happy you got your snake!

My mom was super freaked out at the idea I was getting a lizard, 14 at the time. I brought home my new little bearded dragon, and I was stoked. He was just starting to shed when I got him, so day 3 I gave him a bath. Forgot to grab a towel so I begged my mom to just keep an eye on him and after much coaxing she agreed. I was gone less than a minute and I cane back to her holding him and going on and on about how cute he is. I was stunned.

Glad someone said something about the "room temperature" thing. I see so many reptile guides that say "this will do great at room temp" and I'm like, ok, what temp is your room my guy. I keep my rooms around 18C because that's what my body is used to, will that be ok for this tropical creature? Oh it's not? You just live in a warm part of the world and couldn't imagine that other people don't live in your house? Write better guides is what I'm saying

Yeah. Like pet rabbits live 8+ years but in the wild they only live 2 bc of bad conditions. Just an example of how conditions effect life span. So if Jungle Bob's reptiles are living such short lives then he really shouldn't have them...

Probably because he talked about the male & female living together. That permanent breeding would stress them badly & could also lead to the mother dying from malnutrition from constantly producing eggs ... So if he constantly keeps his pairs together I could imagine them dying sooner... But I was confused to hear 5-7 years too!

I really want a crested gecko BECAUSE of their long lifespan. I become attached to my animals and would prefer they lived longer, although I'm not entirely against pets with a short lifespan. I'm getting a hamster in the next few weeks and i have had rats in the past. But i would prefer animals with a longer lifespan.
@MaddieSmith
@MaddieSmith 2 жыл бұрын
“Not long lived, 5-7 years” *laughs in plenty of 20+ year old geckos* Also, since I’ve been breeding them for several years, own a lot, and have produced a lot, I’ll chime in on the breeding side of it; There’s not “normal” morph crested geckos. The lower end geckos you’d see would likely be brindles, flames, or patternless, and while those could be cheap animals themselves, there’s also higher quality brindles, flames, and patternless geckos that go for several hundred as long as they have good structure and lineage. The main issue is people who don’t know what they’re doing pairing random stuff with no lineage together and producing more poorly structured, muddy colored, blurry patterned geckos and then not being able to sell them because the low quality market is flooded. The chance of getting a low quality animal coming from a high quality pairing is incredibly low. The chance of getting an extremely cheap pet store quality gecko coming out of a high end pairing would be nearly impossible. Even the lowest quality animal produced by a high end pairing would hold value due to the lineage behind it.

@@kellymckenzie5686 they can definitely make it 15-20+ years if cared for properly. They were only rediscovered in the mid-90’s so the ones we have in the country came over in the late 90’s. In the grand scheme of things, they are very new to captivity. Back then, we didn’t know much about them or their diet. Now, with a balanced commercial diet available and a better understanding on how to care for them, I definitely think we’ll see many of these guys living 20+ years 😁 congrats on your new pet!

I used to be very confused by "room temperature" reptile care guides. What happens at night? Maybe it's ok for it to get a bit cooler at night, but surely there's a limit. Were these guides only intended for people living in warmer areas and why didn't they say so? And even if it could get cold at night, what happens when you're out all day? It would be absurd to suggest it's cheaper and easier to care for this reptile because you can HEAT YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE even when you're not in it instead of just heating the enclosure. And then I found out that North Americans usually have a different type of heating system and it's normal to have it on 24/7. Mind = blown.

Keeping a central heater (one that uses gas and modulates) on 24/7 will actually save money on gas and will cause less damage to the burner (saves in maintenance). The best way to heat your house is to keep your thermostat on the same temperature all the time, and if you want to let your house cool down at night, if you’re away or want to heat it up when you’re cold you never set it higher or lower than 2°C above or below the set temperature. This only works for modulating central heaters that use gas other heaters can have other ideal settings.

@@carrieseymour5197 I got this from my neighbor and he has worked with modulating gas heaters for the last 20 years or so. Regular non modulating on/off central gas heaters will maintenance wise benefit from being turned on as little as possible so keeping your house at the same temperature might damage the burner a bit more but you will still have a little benefit in gas usage because keeping a room at the same temperature uses less energy than heating a room up. Most modern heat pump systems don’t even have the capacity to heat a room back up to the normal temperature.

@Phantom StarsX I was honestly confused that he didn't know it, then I saw so many talk about it in the comments. Lol. I am horribly hot all the time! It could be -15° and I'm sure I would be sweating. I guess I knew it because I have used it as a defense to turn the heat off at my mom's house (she is always cold) lol... I never turn heat on in the winter resulting in my home starting at a perfect 60ish all winter, but I go to my moms and I can't breath, her heart will be 80. Lol... anyways I guess I learned that not it's not common knowledge that room temperature is aviary defined. Lol and maybe I learned I'm a bit of a Karen when it comes to getting to hot. 😆 🤣 😂

@@staceydailey6394 oh I totally get it I hate anything over 71 inside. But yeah unfortunately with reptiles in general I've just stopped relying on "common sense/knowledge" with reptiles, I tend to just specify everything I can cause yeah... I've seen some shocking stuff. I was also surprised when I realized people didnt know what "room temperature" referred to and literally just thought it meant any ambient temps, no heat lamps ever.

The mom thing is so true. I had a small garter snake years ago and it went horribly. My dad and I went camping and we got a call from my mom and she was panicking. She had tried to feed the snake and it got out of his tank and somehow got into the kitchen. Instead of acting normal my mom and my sister both lost it. My sister was sitting on the counter screaming as my mom put on oven mitts and used a spatula to put him back in his tank. After that we did have the snake for much longer. Years down the road I wanted to get a crested gecko. My step mom said no because she was afraid of reptiles. Long story short I’ve had my crestie for almost two years. Everyone else in my house knows about him except my step mom. Lol guess it’s a mom thing 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

just random thing,(relating to moms not liking geckos/snakes) but my mom didn't like the thought of owning a Gecko in the house, (leopard gecko) which I ended up getting. but I made her name him, and she grew to love him when I brought him home.(when I got him) I've had this gecko since I was 15, I am now in college and because my dorms don't allow pets my family takes care of him while I am away. but It is so cool to see my family grow to love him just as much as I do. every time I visit them they tell me about how they take care, and how happy he is. my lil guy is 4 years old now and hopefully I am able to take care of him once again next year in an apartment.

Yknow, sometimes I’m surprised about my mom compared to others. She was deathly afraid of reptiles but allowed me to get a beardie. She fell in love with him, let me get a leopard gecko. Snakes were a HUGE hurdle for her, but she let me get a ball python and after a few months she’d come and look at him. Ask me to bring him out, and eventually she held him, and now she gets upset when people needlessly kill snakes and preach educating yourself on local wildlife and relocating. She’s made big steps to understand my pets. Big proud of her.

I'm sorry this man wants you to keep a whole ass family of them in a juvie enclosure? Also I use heat mats with cresties. I tape them on the back at the bottom and use a thermostat. They aren't usually on, but they kick on sometimes at night if it gets below 65F. Once when my AC was out on a Las Vegas summer day I had to pop a frozen water bottle in the enclosure. Not my favorite animal, but a lot end up needing foster homes so here we are lol.

Cresteds are 15-20 years especially if not constantly breeding. Balls can be 40-60. Oldest male was 46 in the 90s (and we've learned so much about thrm since then) Oldest female is still alive at 64-she made the news in 2020 when she laid eggs at 63. I have a bp turning 30 this year-got her as an inexperienced 15 year old that was given all kinds of outdated info and gear from the 90s and no Google. So 30 years is easily achievable for BPs.

Idk if it works with cresties, but for leos you can sort of cut off the head of a waxworm and make them lick the insides and it might trigger the gecko to eat it? Or if you're really dedicated of wanting him to eat insects, you could mix them up in a blender or mash up with other tools after gutloading them (and freeze the rest in icecube forms to thaw up). For liquid, you could iust go with water or even mix with the pangea. Or you could serve the pangea drop by drop on a chopstick when he is really hungry and move the stick around just a bit and then more and more, it might trigger his underlying hunting after a few weeks rather than just feeding from a dish? Just some ideas to try out!

its funny you said that about waterfalls as my crestie has a fountain that is water runnyng down leaves and he spends monst of his time sitting on the branch beside it with is tail on the leaf in the water. no idea why he likes his tail to be wet as he could easily have it resting on the branch. he has this weird thing where he jumps at my mum when she walks past, never does this with anyone else that has ever gone past his tank, and yesterday i had to wipe poop that had been smeared all over the top leaf as he must have jumped not long after pooping and his tail smeared it

I am a mom with 3 and 5 year old daughters. We have 8 snakes, 2 crested geckos, 3 whites tree frogs, garden snails, 10 isopod colonies, a dead leaf mantis, Dubai roach colonies, a betta, pet rats, dogs, an African grey and a chinchilla. The men in my family are terrified of snakes and creeped out by bugs. I don’t think it’s a “mom” issue. It’s dependent on the person and the responsibility involved. That said, I disagree with Jungle Bob and truly believe that any critter you bring into your family must be thoroughly researched and correctly provided for. It must be an adult’s responsibility which they can use as a teaching and learning experience for their children who can contribute to the care of the animal.

I am a proud rehome for a leopard gecko. The previous owners bought her the Leo for their child. The kids did nothing but the mom took care of the leo very nicely yet got bad information from a store. Not the worst but not the greatest. The leopard gecko is very healthy and I changed all her tank set up. My point is. It's sad when people buy kids a very difficult pet for a young child for Christmas 3 years ago. They couldn't take care of her anymore so I stepped in with lots of research and now Sally the Leo is super happy and healthy. Never buy a reptile for a child that never knew what they are doing with it. Not a good guide for a crestie. :(

Since they can come in a variety of conditions from good to near dead it's easier to keep an eye on them that way. An employee not doing their job and not cleaning leading to the mold is very clearly on the employee, They neglected their job ultimately leading to those cresties deaths. i actually keep my crested gecko with my whites tree frog, they’re close in size so they never try to eat each other. sometimes they have “standoffs” where they get face to face and stare each other down, but these always end with one of them walking away without violence. i should mention that this is a 180 gallon enclosure, i guarantee they would have killed each other or had negative affects from stress if i put them in a 40 gallon or something. i am going to move them into seperate enclosures soon because i would rather use my 180 gallon for a large group of smaller frogs and lizards, maybe anoles, dart frogs, and some smaller tree frog. also ik they have somewhat different temp/humidity requirements, but the tank is large enough to have multiple areas with the perfect conditions for each animal
