I agree with you that things always come back in style. I was invited to a formal function and at 81 yrs old I didn’t want to spend money on something new. I remembered a St Johns formal bright red suit I purchased 51 years ago and had folded and packed away. It was in style, fit perfect and looked beautiful on me. I got so many compliments and people were amazed it was 51 yrs old. I felt like a princess!!

Love this!❤ at work a (extremely beautiful) co- worker wore a green top with brown slacks. The whispers laughing at her supposed faux pas! I told them to look out the window. Mother nature pairs it beautiful as well! 😂 it for very quiet!

I kept 2 coats of my mother in law’s that she wore in New York in the late 1940’s. I have been told to get rid of them. My thought is wear them with jeans and add a vintage broach. Your thought please.

I once admired an amazing red and gold plaid dress a co- worker wore to a wedding. This was in 2013. She told me it was a Gucci dress she bought for $5K while on vacation in Italy. She said she thought long and hard about buying it because of the price- but she decided to buy it because she felt she would regret not buying this beautiful dress more than the economizing she would have to do once she got home. She said the dress has more than paid for itself in the happiness and confidence it gives her when she wears it to special events. It has become her signature look and that people in her life always expect to see it when she arrives. I was happy just to get my picture taken with her that day- so I can keep enjoying too.

I reconstructed my grandmothers ring that is white gold and had been worn down cut and added to my father in laws gold wedding band and sized down to fit me. My new favorite ring.

I have large top - broad shoulders and NO hips. My body hasn't changed much over the many years. What I find so funny is I do wear cloths that are 20 years old and look great. Worst is when someone asks me where I got it! I do believe choosing wisely and having fun is the key.

In Paris, matching bags and shoes has long been the ultimate fashion faux pas. But for several years, matching them has been an accepted idea. We will then focus on the right color while mixing the materials. For example a leather bag with satin shoes. The ideal look? Make the bag and shoes of the same color the only flashy touch in an all black or all white outfit. Even more daring: the two-tone look. By focusing on accessories of one shade which contrast with clothes of another. The effect is always assured and proves that when it comes to fashion, the only valid rule is that all rules are made to be broken.

When I was growing up (60’s) matching shoes and bags were expected. (Obviously I wasn’t raised in Paris). Also we didn’t wear shoes lighter than our skirts - think white shoes with a black skirt. Also NEVER wore hosiery darker than our shoes. But somehow Go-Go boots with hot pants were totally fine.

I agree! Wear what makes you happy. Love the tip about taking a picture because I have had times where I am planning an outfit in my head, put it on for work, and then think, "OK, this doesn't look right. What was I thinking?!" 😂

I’m 81 so come from the old rule of matching my shoes to my hemline. I do carry many different color purses, I’m now using a Kelly Green one. lol all your videos, so informative.😊

In the last few years, I have been guilty of only making practical purchases. I'm going to lightly embrace my colorful side. Seeing your vintage I regret decluttering a few items. They've come back in style as a "trend"...lol

I agree. I'm old enough to have seen styles return more than once. But I'm not holding out for red, white and blue striped hiphugger bell bottoms coming back. My dad hated mine, especially with the fringed vest. Oh the 70's!

To quote the great MUA John Maclean, “Trends are for the anxious.” This video is great. I have broken almost all of these rules since I was a teen. Never cared for trends. Mixed metals from the beginning-though I prefer white gold, sometimes you can’t get something in white gold so you have to go with yellow. I wear them both together. No denim on denim? Never heard that one. I’ve done that, hell everyone does that where I’m from. Haha! Great video!

My husband like to take pictures of my outfits before I/we go out. Very illuminating! Some outfits are great, some not so! I look at the pictures & adjust before going out! Thanks for the tips, Nicole! I like the darker tan color with black, but not brown & black or navy with black… I just don’t feel comfortable. You, however, look ravishing in everything!😘🥰🙏

Another beautifully helpful video. I remember my mom talking about no white after Labor Day. There were definitely widely accepted rules in her era and trends didn't come with such a voracious speed. No one can really keep up now and I personally don't want to feed the fast fashion cycle. I love your advise concerning classics, consignment and doing your own thing. Cheers to you NIkol.

I mix metals most days because my wedding set is white gold. I think that looks better with pave’ diamonds but I wear a lot of yellow gold also. Does she think you should have a wedding ring in each! Plus brown and black is my favorite color combo. So chic. When I don’t know what to wear, I pull out a black blazer mix it with tan trousers and a black and brown top. Suddenly, I feel good.

Love this too!! The tip about being practical really resonates with me because is what my mum always says... but she went through WW2 and a lot of deprivation because of that so I can see where she's getting from, so I think that sometimes a lot of prescriptions in being practical may come from that, expecially if the person telling us may have had a completely different experience of life we have... For me, I love mixing blue and black for instance, and don't care either much about the rules, if we love what we're wearing and it makes us feel special then we can carry through every mix and it will work 😊

Nikol enjoy your videos so much. About 30 years ago I splurged on an Oscar de la Renta black lace dress with brown under the lace. It is so pretty and I still have it! My biggest regret is that I listened to friends, family, and experts who criticized until I finally "cleaned out my closet." I am so sorry bcs I have always bought lovely clothes, took great care of them. I also had some great memories in those pieces. Now I look for vintage bcs you cannot duplicate the quality today. Well, I've been breaking all those rules forever. I always buy/dress according to my body type and my personality. Never follow trends, only on the rare occasion would I purchase an item that was a current trend. Always trying to explain to friends that just because there is a new trend doesn't mean it will suit them. And, honestly there have some trends I really liked, but, they never ever looked good on me. When someone says, "you must wear this" or "you should not wear that combination" - it just tickles the rebel within me... and gives me one more reason to break such silly rules. I actually never wear black with brown or black with navy. But that's only because black doesn't suit me, and I'm not fond of it. My choice and my choice alone. I loved this video! Dressing up is an art form! Also, matching metals and leather would sometimes feel too contrived. Knowing when and how to deviate from these rules would actually help to define your own personal style.

What in the world is wrong with total strangers or even some so called "friend" coming up and say anything negative to you about your style. They are just jealous of you because you are so beautiful and put together. I love your style and can't wait for each video. I am so enjoying your BB creme foundation, eyeshadows and lipsticks. I had never tried a BB creme before, however I loved your BB creme foundation and all the products so far. I was at a restaurant last night and a lady complimented me about my makeup look and my hair (which is silver/ salt & pepper now). I was so pleased with the compliment. Fantastic tips Nikol! Thank You… When I was younger, I used to blaze my own trail with fashion; however, through the years I became a victim of trends. You are absolutely right… it’s a waste of money. Also, I started to not enjoy fashion any longer. It became a chore and I was constantly doubting myself as to what I was wearing. Some looked ridiculous on me and I was not loving any of my outfits. I am starting to go back to my love of classics and not caring what’s in again. It’s such a great feeling to wear what compliments me and to feel comfortable in my own skin again. Yet again, thanks Nikol for the reminder to celebrate and have fun with our individuality! 😊 ❤ P.S. You’re so right about videoing ourselves! I thought a sweater wrap looked wonderful on me and then I saw a video and gasped at how frumpy I was! lol It’s ok around the house but I will not wear it out shopping again! Haha

I definitely err classical like you, but I definitely love a great color or a sequined piece (because why not?) Fashion and makeup is all about having fun and expressing yourself. I'm having a "I need all the sleeves" Moment right now, so you will see dropped shoulders with poofy sleeve, puffy shoulders with skinny sleeves, ruffled sleeves, just unique sleeves. Fashion is ever evolving.

Thanks as always for your advice Nikol. I love your classic style and that you don't follow the fleeting trends. Also, matching handbags with shoes was a trend when I was a kid in the 80s. So glad it isn't looked down upon to mix and match colors and metals now. I am gravitating to the gold jewelry trend right now because I always loved the look of gold (even if it's costume 😉).

All points are so true! Ive never followed trends in fashion especially as many outfits would fit my size or personality or life. I do what feels great to me. I am currently trying to change my too comfortable style but I’m not sure how to go about it. I can see it in my head but putting it into words is more difficult. Either way I am sure I will look nothing like “what’s big” for 2024 (or ever) and I LOVE that fact

🎉❤🎉❤...I love mixing metals...and metal textures, stones and pearls to gently highlight. It helps me pull colors together especially the navy, brown, black/grey combos with my cooler coloring. A little metal mixing goes a very long way! Nikol, you are a daily inspiration!

It astounds me people still feel the need to tell people “don’t mix metals” or Ect… I think an etiquette class may be more appropriate for them. Do you. If you are respectful in your dress and mannerisms do you. Go for it.
