LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx

The worst part are meta changes. Pinocchio goes to school and they throw him out… in original he chooses to not go and the lesson is different. Now it’s the society punishing him. Not his own fault. And small things like no smoking scene and generally he is a victim and not a bad boy

And at the end of the movie, he doesn’t even turn into a real child, because “yayyy diversity must be accepted no matter what”. The original message of the story was that a real human has to go through pain and commit mistakes in order to improve and develop empathy. Hence the final transformation into a human being (vulnerable, but capable of emotions and conscience). In this remake Pinocchio, for once, doesn’t make any mistake, thus he does not learn anything at the end, and as a result he is doomed to remain a lifeless puppet without self-determination.

This undermines the whole message of the film. If Pinocchio isn't smoking and drinking then how is he learning right from wrong? It's as if he already knows, making the whole plot of the film, and the payoff of Pinocchio being brave to save his father from Monstro, pointless!

I have a large LARGE issues with these live action movies/realistically animated movies. But I think one of my biggest problems with these movies is that they're afraid to have intimate, emotional moments. They just throw some humor into it and call it a day. Finding Nemo, Mulan, Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up..... All those movies came out when I was young. And I loved the funny parts, but the emotional parts hit just as hard. I hate that they are removing a lot of the emotional beats to these stories

Pinocchio waking up as a real boy is the most magical movie scene of all time. Always brings tears to my eyes. The live action version takes that scene and flushes it down the toilet like a turd. Only the stains remain. Tom Hanks, an actor who takes on roles with enormous conviction, doesn’t even pretend to care.
@EpicJoshua314
@EpicJoshua314 Жыл бұрын
I didn’t think the scene where Pinocchio becomes real was flushed down the toilet. The scene where it appears that Geppetto has died and then comes back to life was very heartwarming, and Pinocchio does become real, you just got to look carefully and his limbs turn human. Jiminy’s message at the end has a great meaning: you should judge people for who they are based on their personality and not on their outside. It’s ironic that a wooden boy has a real heart while the villains who have real flesh and blood hearts have wooden hearts.

Tom Hanks is both an underrated and overrated actor. In looking at his career, you'd say he has some a great moments in serious movies (Saving Private Ryan comes to mind), but when you go back and look at the most enjoyable films with him, you'll find that it's the comedies, Bachelor Party, Volunteers, and Big (and a few others) that are really where he used to shine. And he seems a little full of himself for someone who started his career as a stand-up comedian and became famous as doing drag in Bosom Buddies.

I guess the question is, where do we draw the line on the remakes really beginning? Because stuff like the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland and the Angelina Jollie Maleficient aren't really remakes. And . . . the first of both of those films aren't necessarily good, but they are at least interesting. I think they deserve to exist. I won't comment on the sequels to those movies XD I consider the true remakes to really only have started with, l think, Cinderella? and then they've sorta gotten steadily worse from there.

In the modern remake, Pinocchio is an alegory for transgender. Note that in the remake instead of not going to school, he is kicked out of the school because he's different. In the remake, instead of being punished when lying, he learns that his odd "nose growing" feature is actually something that can help him and to embrace it, so he uses lying to get what he needs. In the remake at the end instead of explicitly turning into a "real boy," it's left ambiguous becuase the moral is that he was "a real boy all along" he never had to earn it.

@@Boxermom0317 It would be interesting to know how big a boost the original animated movies get in sales and viewership after the live-action animated movies come out since The Jungle Book is usually the only Disney live-action animated movie to be considered arguably better than the original (and I think that's because the 1967 movie is rough around the edges so there was room to improve upon it). I'm sure when it comes down to it Disney is doing this primarily for $ because it drives sales with the older generations that grew up in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's taking the new generation to see the new films and then introducing them to the older films afterwards.

In the animated film, Pleasure Island was a place where the boys would actually do illegal things like vandalism, smoking cigars, underage drinking, etc. But in the liveaction version, it's just kids being hyper, drinking and eating too much sweets- tyical kid things but they're still being punished by being turned into donkeys. And the fact that they copied the nose-lengthening scene from Shrek 2 (maybe for reference points), they completely erased the lesson of how lying will just cause you more problems and they just outright kicked Pinocchio from school just because he looks different was twisted. It just showed that Pinocchio did the right thing but got punished for it instead of showing the puppet was ignoring his conscience (Jiminy Cricket) and decided to join two strangers with the promise of fame rather than go to school as his father instructed.

That's one of the great things about "classic" films: they were made for families rather than for children, so parents can watch and enjoy them with the kids, rather than just plopping them in front of a screen and walking away.

I agree, I try to limit screentime as much is as realistic (I work an office job out of my house with 2 toddlers lol). When I do resort to the screen so I can get something done, I use the TV instead of a phone or tablet. Much easier for me to keep tabs on what they're being exposed to, and the fast forward is liberally used lol. Everything I show them is pre-recorded from the DVR from a program I find reasonably trustworthy, OR it's a DVD I bought (like Mister Roger's or Veggietales). On weekends, when I'm off work, my kids rarely see a screen unless I need to make dinner lol I tried hiring mother's helpers in the past so the kids could be entertained, unfortunately the only good one had a schedule change and couldn't do it anymore. The worst was the daughter of a family friend who was always on her phone and my daughter always cried around her. And I had to literally pay her for her time. A DVD always works, and it's nearly free. I wish it wasn't the case. Looking forward to the day I can stay at home with the littles :)

An animated man celebrating his creation of his animated son is far more believable because, well, they're both animated. In our minds, we're free to believe that, in each their eyes, Pinocchio looks just as human as any kid (minus the obvious details). A live-acted man doing the same for his fully CGI son just can't sell the same feeling. It's like that time in the Twilight movies where the main couple has a baby, but the baby was fully CGI animated when it's shown.

The music channel "Sideways" goes into why live action doesn't work. The core of it is suspension of disbelief. It's easy to believe a crab can sing and has a Jamaican accent in animation because cartoon. We're already in a fantasy and believing he can talk so singing isn't a stretch. By making these live action remakes as close to real as possible it just doesn't work. We KNOW crabs don't talk or sing in our world so it ruins the immersion of the world or story. We can't slip into that reality because it's set in our world but we know it's not real. So every time something not real comes up you spend your time focused on "WTF" not the story.

And to be blunt, you're not generally going to find most of them primarily on KZfaq. That's not say that all the people talking about film on KZfaq are bad. There's some really good and insightful critiques. Just that it's not the beginning and ending of film critique by a long shot. Even Gore here is a bit unusual on youtube coming from a background in print.

I'm not buying this point at all. Animators didn't slip this into the scene. It's a joke that has been written, reviewed and approved. It falls flat and ended up in the movie because that's the kind of writing in family movies now; shoehorning lots of jokes that aren't funny. These kind of decisions will make films from now seem dated in future. It's comparable to canned laughter in Hanna Barbera cartoons and old sitcoms when a joke doesn't carry its weight.

What Chris is describing in regards to why live action movies of classic animation don’t work for audiences is beautifully articulated in the 1993 classic Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud “… when you look at a photo or realistic drawing of a face- you see the face of ANOTHER. But when you enter the world of the cartoon - you see YOURSELF.” (Pg 36) In other words, the more specific and realistic they make it, the less the audience is able to suspend their disbelief and see THEMSELVES in the characters on screen and fantasize along with them. Not that I want to defend these films, but where did this notion come from movies were not made for money? Major picture have always been made for money. Who's gonna invest millions into a film if they're not going to make it back? The art form of cinematic filmmaking never died. It's always been there. But the same people who complain that movies got bad never ever bothered with dinky little theaters showing Gone With the Wind or attending Sundance. @@DuoXCity Because there's a clear delineation between creating films for the sake of creating them - that is, expressing creativity through art and presentation - and creating them for the sheer desire to make money. "Box Office takes" should always be secondary to the art and craft of creation and are used as a measurement of public appreciation, rather than an end-goal. > Who's gonna invest millions into a film if they're not going to make it back? But that's the point. Investing in a film should always be a risk. There should never be an assured guarantee, which is why making _the best film possible_ should be the priority, that those odds of that success may be improved and _also_ encourage an increase in quality. Don't conflate your particularly sour taste in your mouth about modern day filmmaking with the idea that "we" all contributed to this. There is such a thing as choosing whether or not to see a film. The "we" you're thinking of is mostly China, where they practically have no choice in the matter because of how controlled film production is there. Oh, and it's "trough," not "troth." It's important to remember that young children are very, VERY astute when it comes to picking up messaging in stories. Be careful what you let them watch. These live action remakes often tweak the original moral messages in the story.

The irony about you saying that is Disney was sued in the 1940s for violating the Pinnochio's novels 'moral copyright' by watering down it's pretty brutal morality play. In short, Pinnochio was a giant and unreptenant @ssh0l3 in the novel and winds up hung by the neck until dead. This was dark even for the time and author's publisher convinced him to bring Pinnochio back to life in future novels. But that's how it all started out. Disney is just doing what they always do and sanitizing the Grimm's style fables they rip off. It's just that most of them can't survive two rounds of sandblasting without being rendered smooth and meaingless as an egg. There's no subverssive message because there's not really a moral message or really any message period. In this movie, to quote the late great Terry Pratchett "Things just happen, what the hell." I guarantee nobody was thinking 'lying is good' they were thinking 'well we can't show a child doing that in a Disney movie, censer it!' and then the writers werer ordered to figure out how to still get from Point A to point B in the script without Pinnochio actually doing the original bad thing that got him from point A to point B. This is the same studio that tried to censer the word 'Butthead' because by transitive property it could mean a child is saying 'asshole'. In fact there's a whole fascinating list of those from Gravity Falls that were utterly bizarre. Presumable the position of censer is handed out by Disney to the adult children of board members so they can put it down as work experience.

@@Bustermachine it sounds like the moral of the story is the same except they have Pinocchio never learn in the original. Great point about things not translating from Animation to Live action (or realistic CGI). For me it was so odd in the Lion King 2019 how Simba grew up eating literally nothing but bugs and grew into a big-ass fully grown adult lion. Obviously, that doesn't make sense in the cartoon either, but you don't think about it because of the medium.

Completely agree - and here's the real reason: instead of actively culturing kids and exposing them to great art like the classic Disney films and teaching them to respect what came before, the new generation can't be bothered to seek out history or even have a respect for it. Everything has to be new - it has to be claimed as their own. So they appropriate all the best parts of these beautiful original works and put empty husks on the screen instead for kids to imbibe. It's the exact same thing in all media industries and why there is little good music anymore, very few good films and no good sitcoms left. Nothing is original anymore...

Live action Simpsons recreated and poisoned by HOLLYWOOD today: Homer Simpson keeps his role as dumb white male who learns the importance of one or more WOKE agendas. Marge Simpson divorces Homer at the end because she's a feminist who doesn't need a man. Lisa Simpson develops a sexual relationship with another girl as she fights corporations involved with causing climate change. Bart Simpson fights against the male patriarchy which tries to bring him into their brotherhood. Ned Flanders becomes gay and talks about his relationship. Kissy Kendra is a new trans teacher at the school surrounded by children. *And then Hollywood wonders why this failed at the movie theaters.*

This "updated for modern audiences" isn't just happening with animated stories. A film critic here on yt was showed how the latest iteration of Hercules Poirot missed just about every descriptor that the books gave him. It seemed as though no one had read Christie or was even a fan of the films with David Suchet or Peter Ustinov (they got it right). Why bother, then? Why not just make a new character and story? Because this is the easy way out.
