To me Sampling was never about picking something people recognize: It’s about taking a sound and flipping it to make something intentionally different and new. Essentially the opposite IMO As a Producer

Super Freaky Girl is pretty good in concept. First Class had a gimmick that could've worked had it been given more effort. Way 2 Sexy is just plain lazy.

Id say "Big Energy" by Latto (Sampling "Genius of Love" by Tom Tom Club (1981)) is pretty egregious, especially since the Christmas Demon herself Mariah Carey did way better with the same sample. Also, the energy in her voice is pretty much the opposite of what the title describes. It's one of many songs like it that have almost no staying power and exist to make labels money in the short term.

I feel like anyone who says this must’ve only found out about Fivio through that verse. In reality, Fivio’s career has been on a downward trajectory since about a year after Big Drip blew up. His career was on life support. Off The Grid and City of Gods literally breathed life into his career for about 6 months. If it wasn’t for that verse he would’ve disappeared into obscurity. I would’ve still checked for his music, but that’s only because I watched his come up. But the mainstream would’ve never heard his name again.

I’m surprised he didn’t mention how BIA got Timbaland to reuse that sample from the iconic Missy Elliot track “She’s a Bitch” even though Ski Mask used it wayyyy better imo with “Catch Me Outside” which released years before BIA used it and he Ski has always been vocal about how his music is very influenced/inspired by Timbaland and yet Ski never got a mention or anything from Timbaland as far as I know for that track but I’d love to be proven wrong 😂

One extra one not from now, but from the late 90s. "I'll Be Missing You" by Diddy which samples "Every Breath you take" by the Police. The samples not even bad, but something about how dead diddy sounds on this song made as a tribute to his dead friend has never sat right with me.

I think sampling is great but holy shit copying the whole ass song is damn near sickening. Like I genuinely get nauseous when I here it because it just aggravates me. And honestly a lot of them aren’t technically “bad” in quality, but it’s just hard to listen to because it’s just “Why am I not listening to the version that’s superior in every way and doesn’t sound like if McDonalds made a mid 2000s RnB song. i'm glad someone is finally talking about first class because even though nothing about glamorous aged well it's such a close song to my heart and jack harlow taking it and making it some lazy, non-catchy chorus where he just lets the fucking song play out because he ran out of wordplay is so irritating to me 😭 that song might be the sole reason why i wrote off jack harlow in general. great video btw! every video idea you come up with is so interesting, especially this one! :D

The fact that the new trend in rap music is basically the way many beats from the 80's and early 90's are made proves to me that time is a circle. Scratch that, at least old school producers tried to find obscure samples that still sounded good. Also, Ice Cube didn't call No Vaseline "Dazz Brick To Yo Face" or something like that.

Oh my God thank you for making this video. That NLE Choppa song annoys me so much because there isn’t even the slightest bit of originality to it. It’s basically just taking an already existing throwback song (that’s already not very good to begin with) and banking on the fact that people will feel the nostalgia for that throwback. It’s so damn lazy but yet people eat it up, so I guess I can’t really blame Choppa for it
