Just a suggestion. In future, please give avg temps instead of just saying "cold" and "really cold." The word "cold" by itself is relative. Really cold to someone in Florida or in the UK may be -2°C/28°F, where as a midwest gardener, I think cold is -15°C/ 5°F (though still warm enough to run out and check for eggs whilst wearing nothing more than shorts, a t-shirt and clogs, lol), and really cold is below -26°C/ -15°F. Good vid, though. Cheers.

I agree, I grew up in a semi-tropical place and now live in SCal so 50 deg F weather is really cold for me, lol.

@@bluegrassdiggers9030 Depends on where in Canada. For example Ontario is Z6 and is, on average, around 15 to 20 degrees WARMER in winter than here in our Z5 pocket in the Ozarks.

I use 1 gallons for starter fig tree rooted cuttings. Once they fill out the 1 gallon with plenty of roots, I switch to the 5 Gallon. When that gets root saturated, I let it dry out and move to either a 15 Gallon pot or a 25 Gallon if I'm going to keep the tree. It works for me. Starter 1 Gallon, about three months. 5 Gallon, about 1 to 2 years. 15 Gallon up to 5 years. 25 or in the ground, it's a keeper.

My experience with figs is that they a have wild crazy root system. Shallower, yes, but extensive. How long have you had your figs in the square planters?

Most 5 gal buckets are not UV resistance so break down if exposed to lots of sunlight. More expensive 5 gal buckets or nursery pots last longer when left in sunlight.

I would like your opinion on a great and trustworthy place to buy fig cuttings now that you've shown me how to start the cuttings and which pot to buy. I appreciate it and I live in Wisconsin so I understand cold. I would also like to know where you winter over yout trees? Thanks so much. I just joined and am learning a lot from you.

Great analysis but I disagree on your thoughts on how long the paint bucket pots will last. The ones I have used are not UV protected and they fall apart after a couple of years.

The food grade ones hold up much longer, which is probably what he’s using. Standard paint buckets I agree crack after 2 years of sun.

Use a tip I learned from Dan on his channel Plant Abundance... buy a roll of burlap or other similar fabric and wrap your pots in them. It will keep them cooler, look nicer, as well as prevent a majority if not all UV degradation. 👍
