The fact that Goodra never got recover or regenerator boggles me since it's based off of slugs that can regenerate parts of their body. I also feel like it should have at least been part Poison as well.

Dragon/Poison could have worked well with it. Despite having four weaknesses, it gets seven resistances and only Steel resists that combo. Which it could easily cover.

Multiscale is close to a signature ability, only held as a hidden ability by Dragonite, Lugia (cover legendary uber), and a slightly stronger version in Lunala's (cover legendary uber) Shadow Shield. Honestly kinda surprising this ability was introduced as a hidden ability only in gen 5 for 2 pokemon, and they haven't given any other pokemon this ability.

I personally like Goodra's design. It looks like the type of pokemon you wanna hug, and it's pokedex entry backs that up by saying that it loves hugs. Then you look at the rest of the entry where it says trainers would have to be careful, or otherwise suffer death by snu snu.

Funny thing is... Goodra has the highest individual stat of any pseudo legendary, with a special defense of 150 (not counting megas/alt forms)

Squirtle With a perma-Sand boost and max Sp. Def investment, T-tar has the equivalent of 174.1 base Sp. Def. With no investment except 31 IVs, T-tar "only" has 130 base Sp. Def with the Sand boost.

@@christiancinnabars1402 in practice, Tyranitar is actually bulkier though. I ran a damage calculation with a Calm Goodra with 252 EVs in SpD and HP against a modest Infernape with 252 EVs in SpA (used Infernape since both Goodra and Tyranitar take 1/2 damage from fire). Using Fire Blast, Infernape dealt 11.9-14% damage. Against a Calm Tyranitar with 252 EVs in SpD and HP in sand and reducing Ttar’s base HP from 100 to 90, Infernape still only did 10.6-12.5%. With its actual base HP of 100, that damage dropped to 10.1-11.8%. I decided to see what super effective damage would do, so I also ran the calcs against a Modest Gardevoir with Moonblast. That same Goodra takes 46.8-55.2% vs 42.1-50% with nerfed Ttar and 40-47.5% for actual Ttar.

Goodra is simply described as a Jack of all trades. It’s definitely got versatility but even AV Goodra, while being extremely tanky, is outclassed by a fellow PSEUDO LEGENDARY named tyranitar that can even TANK a focus blast from mega alakazam. Every reason you may have for using goodra for, there’s almost always a Pokémon that can do it better. Like even sap sipper. Azumarill was more used because of perish trap

@@HanakkoLove Ehhh... not really? It definitely is good defensively, but it is still more offensive powerhouse than not statwise. More of a bulky attacker than wall (tank, i guess?) Goodra could be a amazing tank, but 70 defense with 90 hp isn't going to get it far on that front. I think they should have switched it Atk with Def, but that's probably just my opinion.

It’s a shame that Goodra is considered the weakest, because I love its design (it’s one of my Top 3 favorite mons of all time, I wanna hug it) and it’s the one I enjoy using the most. Whether it’d be Gooey Assault Vest or Life Orb Hydration, it always puts in work for me with its wide movepool and solid stats. Can’t wait for Hisuian Goodra, it’s bound to be a menace.

@ChaosLord5129It’s a solid special wall with gooey and a high spatk stat, you’re not sweeping w/o significant setup. In a tier with 4 different significant unaware mons, hard setup isn’t a good niche on high ladder.

Not to mention H-Goodra's stat rework shoring up its lackluster defense (70 -> 100) at the cost of mostly speed, which it doesn't make the most of anyway (80 is super awkward for a tank, Dnite remedies this with priority, Multiscale, and DD). It loses Hydration, which is kinda weird since it still needs to be leveled up during rain to evolve in LA, but shell armor is probably more useful anyway.

I was always surprised at how fast Goodra was considering you almost never need all that speed (same with Mandibuzz and Milotic). H-Goodra is exactly what I wanted in the first place and like Mega Slowbro, I think it can make good use of shell armor.

Goodra should've been Water/Dragon type. Not only does it make sense with it's design and evolution method, it would also be a nice callback with it's Hisuian form mirroring Palkia and Dialgas typing. In fact, up until this video I actually thought Goodra was Water/Dragon..

Goodra may be the weakest in terms of combat, but it's by far the most friend-shaped and huggable, and after getting the Hisuian form, also has the best idle/sleeping animation. Obviously those are major factors in the world of competitive Pokemon.

Goodra honestly could have been Dragon/Fairy type. It would help it’s bulk immensely, having 7 resistances and one immunity. With only 4 weaknesses in return. In offence the only type that resists both is steel, so with a single coverage move goodra would become a threat offensively. Finally some move pool buffs that would not be so crazy are Recover, Wish, and Aromatherapy/Refresh It’s move pool other wise is pretty solid IMO

I think it would have also fit very well as a dragon/water or dragon/poison type. Goo is its whole thing and that fits both types, and it evolves in the rain (fitting of a water type) and also learns powerful poison moves like sludge wave. Both are also good secondary typings for dragon by covering one of its weaknesses, ice or fairy respectively. If I had to choose one I would say dragon/water since that fits it best IMO, then dragon/fairy, then dragon/poison since gen 6 already has dragalge (a specially defensive dragon/poison type). But all 3 would have fit it well and benefitted it quite a bit.

I don't think Dragon/Fairy fits Goodra. In terms of what it is based on, it definitely should be Dragon/Water because it is based on a sea slug. Dragon/Poison may also fit, but I don't think anything about goodra is poisonous

I always wondered why Goodra wasn’t a water/dragon type from the beginning. I mean you evolve it by leveling it up in rain, it has the hydration ability and learns a ton of water type moves. If Goodra had this typing plus recover, swap its attack and defense and got calm mind, Goodra would be a lot better but as it stands, I still like Goodra a lot and can’t wait for the Goodra-H to become available in showdown.

Plus, Goodra is a gastropod. The only ones that weren't aquatic are the Slugma -balls- evolution line and Wo-Chien. Even then, the former can be found in undersea volcanoes and the latter isn't even a living creature.

Goodra was actually awesome for the start of this gen, i used av with sap sipper to not only be a pokemon that can actually switch and threaten chi yu with a 2hko from earthquake, forcing it out, but be able to switch into breloom’s spore, which while niche, is a really useful niche and bc of breloom’s mediocre defences, an ice beam or even a dragon pulse can land a 2hko, with wish support from smth like scream tail, it can be a consistent check to even chi yu in the sun, and without spdef investment as well, it was insane

Dragonite seems more up to date than ever with terra e-speed lol. It was out of date before it got dragon dance and mutliscale, and since then it has been extremely fire. And now it also has ice spinner lol

funny because Dragonite was considered completely outclassed by Salamence in RSE and DPP, but then HGSS gave it Extreme Speed which gave it a niche over Salamence (before Salamence was banned). so the thing that made first made it relevant is still going strong.

Dragonite is the most used pokemon in the official competitive format at the moment. 68.32% usage. Second is Gholdengo. It's far from outdated lmao. This thumbnail is so click bait. Right now heavy duty boots, multi scale, dragon dance and tera STAB extreme speed is invaluable. Of course a single pokemon doesn't make a good team but not having a Dragonite on your team? You are at a huge disadvantage from the get go. Same with Gholdengo btw. Just for people reading this in tue future. The game doesn't have home support of me writing this. We are stuck with the 400 launch pokemon for now.

I am one of those that loves Gen 6 XY. No joke, replayed more than any other Gen. It means something when every play through I’ve ever done has never included an elite 4 champions team with Goodra. The most work that boy gets is when I do a complete Pokédex run

I'm on the complete opposite spectrum. Every game that Goodra has been in since XY, I've used in every mainline team. Literally my favorite pokemon and while it isn't good competitively (that's what it's Hisuian counterpart is for), I still love using it each time. Ultra Moon is what made me love using it everytime as well since that's my most replayed pokemon game

Hisuian Goodra seems kinda much better with it's improved typing, it's improved physical bulk (80hp-100def vs 90-70), and access to shell armour. It can stupid easily setup it's signature iron defence clone and body press for days (there should totally be a special body press). It does only have rest for recovery, but it also has the ability to lower opponents attacking stats quite readily. Hell it's even immune to toxic due to steel.

Then you got Kommo-o, which I think a lot of people just forget about after Gen 7 and the terror of the OP Kommonium-Z got wiped away. It's still a very good pokemon offensively and on terms of bulk though, it just is an almost painfully forgettable Pseudo.

Honestly I would have loved it if Goodra had gotten either a secondary Poison typing (fits thematically because it's based on slugs) since it could've turned the Fairy match up on its head, now being able to beat them, another fun option would've been to give it the Water type (it's alredy heavily associated whit the rain afterall) because that way it could function as a bulky Water that isn't threatened by Grass, and Electric moves

Honestly, in a gameplay sense, Dragon-typed Pokémon had no weaknesses until Kalos. Yeah, Ice moves exist, but they won’t be as strong, and you don’t want Ice types, and Dragon types are hard to come by.

As someone who has never been interested in competitive pokemon, I really enjoy Goodra. It's actually my favorite pokemon! I think that the fact that it doesn't look intimidating in comparison to other pseudo legends makes it stand out, and of course Ash's Goodra in the anime is also a HUUGE factor for why I love it so much

So, not to FLEX, but there was a stream where I used goodra to help clutch out a win against you on stream. Does that change anything you said in this video? No, not at all. But Goodra holds a special place in my heart for that. After the battle I was watching the stream, and caught the last couple seconds on your end, and you said "the only way he wins this is if he's got choice band" and I LOVED choice band goodra as a good mix up option in gen 6 UU. Great vid, Joey. Keep up the awesome work

To be fair, Kommo-o before US/UM was definitely considered just as underwhelming as Goodra. Clangorous Soulblaze (and later Clangorous Soul) are really what makes Kommo-o any good at all.

Fantastic Joey Damn i remember we talking about this a few week ago. Im very glad to see you elaborate on this subject. I’ll be honest. I think its such a shame goodra was never maid part fairy. Really for 2 reasons 1. Endorse the new gen typing with a really great contrast, it feels really sad to see altaria get that typing and then lose it due to it being a part of it mega form. In short i think Goodra would had owned that duel typing a lot better with its defensive stats. 2. THE CONTRAST to its Hisuan form. What if they just show cased a adeptaion of its regional diffrence as almost riveling typings? I would had love that contradt so much. Again GREAT subject, cant wait for the next one!!

Baxcalibur is my favorite pseudo they’ve ever released. I’ve climbed up Master Rank both seasons with Bax. With the right Tera it’s so viable it’s insane. It’s base stats are fantastic. Ability is thermal exchange is fire. Like one of the best and most underused mons I’ve seen in so long lmao

Design wise, I don't think there's one pseudo that comes close to Baxcalibur as being one of the worst designs in Pokémon history. With gen 9, almost every mon has grown on me to some extent, except the Baxcalibur line, wich my dislike grows the more I see it. They took a really badass typing as Dragon/Ice, a geinuinely cool new ability, incredible signature move, fantastic name, and put it in a pokémon with the worst parts of Beartic and Drudiggon (my personally least favorite pokémon design of all time). Like, really great color pallete aside, it's incredible how nothing works about it's design. I think it's trying to be intimidating but not too monster-like, similar to Tyranitar, but it ends up being too goofy and cartoonish without being charming like Salamence's wings, and the details feel so ridiculous and out of place, that it ends up looking like a big empty blue blob with random elements pasted with Gorilla glue around it. The absolute worst of both worlds. 8/10 mon. It has a little something for everyone. Would use again.

I was thinking about this as I was looking at the thumbnail and I realized that *60%* of all pseudos have a 4x weakness; dragonite, salamence, and garchomp to ice, tyranitar to fighting, and kommo-o and hydreigon to fairy. Metagross, goodra (both forms), dragapult, and baxcaliber are the only pseudos *without* a 4x weakness. Wow.

That's crazy I always thought that metagross is the worst one tbh. Ik it had competitive use in the past and it's mega probably rivals mega salamance but I'd rather use goodra than metagross today

I agree that Goodra is better now, but overall I think Metagross is better when we consider how it was OU up until gen 6 and has had several viable sets. Goodra wasn't bad and it had its uses, but you generally know what it will do and it was never that relevant to the meta outside of lower tiers. And that's excluding the fact that Metagross got a banworthy mega while Goodra (like all gen 6 mons minus Diancie) didn't.

Goodra may have a good offensive movepool on both sides and great special bulk but like you said, it lacks utility in terms of moves like recovery + entry hazards. I do feel like Hisuian Goodra will have a better niche due to more resistances and having two weaknesses. Even Dragapult, who has a slightly lower special attack (110 vs 100) works better due to the Ghost typing, Infiltrator, high speed and U-Turn.

It gets life dew. Add leftovers to it and I think it can recover 30-33% of it's hp. Not the most but I guess it's something.

1:19-1:27 I probably agree with you on Goodra being the worst, but Komo-o is up there. It's not the first pseudo-legendary with a 4x weakness (and likely won't be the last), but the double weakness to fairy is really the only thing that stands out unless you count Clangorous Soulblaze. While it's a pretty good move in its own right, I don't think it saves Komo-o from being bad relative to other Pseudo legendaries (Garchomp, T-tar, and even Dragonite come to mind). Edit: Good point on STAB Close Combat, but I still think the other pseudo legends are better.

So goodra actually learns a healing move in gen 9: life dew, while it might not be amazing compared to recover it might be better than recover for husian goodra as life dew has more pp and shell armor on husian goodra to boost it's defensive stats without worrying about Critical hits

goodra is my all-time favorite pokemon now that hisui goodra is a thing, very excited for curse + body press sets. i just wish it had recover or even life dew, maybe drain punch. it needs healing to be a real threat

Goodra actually has life dew in gen 9 as an egg move (also the way egg moves work in gen 9 you can teach an exiting pokemon one by unlearning a move, giving it a mirror herb to hold, and setting up a picknick with both it and a pokemon who knows the egg move you want to learn in your party). It's not as good as recover, but at least it has access to some healing.

Dragon/Water would’ve been insane on Goodra. Stab water attacks with the boost from rain. It would lose its ice weakness without picking up any of water types weakness’, only being weak to fairy and dragon. 😮

I was playing with my friend on Showdown and he loves to use Goodra- he says he’s been attached to it since XY. At some point we started talking about ways to buff underutilized Pokémon and we eventually came around to Goodra. He said he wished Goodra was Dragon-Fairy as opposed to mono Dragon and that Goodra should have Recover and/or Regenerator to stand out from the others. With how much Chi-Yu dominated Gen 9 OU before it got banned, I honestly thought this was a super cool idea- albeit unrealistic- as a potential counter/check to it. I guess we can only dream of stuff like that.

They tried to make a defensive Pseudo but didn’t give it the same tools that others get (multiscale, regen, weather defense boost, etc.) just raw stats that get outclassed by something like Blissey in the special dept. and outside of that it’s not very threatening offensively compared to other Pseudos, so even if it walls it doesn’t threaten back or help support in other ways with Teleport, defog or Wish or even a hazard.

I love using Goodra! I use an AV Goodra with max special attack and 128 in both special defense and HP. It's my go to special wall (other than my offensive Blissey lmao) and I've had quite a bit of success using this set. I love how it can tank those special moves so well and it does hit like a truck in return. But I do agree that compared to the other pseudo legendaries it's a bit outclassed. But overall my Goodra set never disappoints me. And I always have fun using it. I don't need speed if you can't damage me for much. And with an immunity to grass type moves made it my prime counter to anyone who uses spore. Overall I think Goodra is a great mon who I love to use In NatDex.

Dude dragon is an amazing typing it resists most every typing it just struggles with fairy ice and offensively steel goodra is the perfect tanky bulk mon for ur gf just use acid armor and hydration and ur set it’s got amazing special D & HP bulk u really cannot go wrong with goodra give it a z move weakness policy or wiki berry and u really can’t do any better it can hit hard with rain in doubles using muddy water I don’t think it needed water/dragon typing

Hisuian Goodra will save the slug's reputation. It sacrifices speed, which was useless on a tank anyways, to become absolutely unkillable. Just imagine the Acid Armor/Body Press set with Shell Armor, that thing's never dying to anything

In vgc goodra was pretty decent since its bulky esp with assault vest, have a variety of different dynamax moves it can use(important ones: max ooze, max overgrowth, max geyser)

I think that game freak is aware of Goodra’s flaws, hence the Hisuian form. Not sure how many mons from future gens are in legends arceus. The goomy line might be it, specifically for an opportunity to buff goodra.

Tbf Basculegion comes from a gen 5 mon and Hisuian Avalul is well, Avalul Basculegion looks to be gnarly with swift swim and also Last Respects (it will free Houndstone) Kalosian AvaLUL and Hisuian AvaLUL both suck. Kalosian is probably slightly better, since Ice is a better defensive typing.

No reason they couldn't do it if they wanted to. We got 2 Grass/Ghosts in gen 6 (and then another 2 in gen 7), 2 grass/fighting in PLA, 2 dark/poison in gen 4, 2 dark/water in gen 3, etc. I agree that it should've been part poison (or water)

I also think 100% Goodra is the worst Pseudo Legend but Hisuan Goodra will defo change that. I think that boy is almost guaranteed to be OU once he drops. As much as it pains me to say this but at that point Metagross would become the worst Pseudo Legend and his still a beast of a pokemon. At that point we will be able to say that Pseudos are so strong even the worst once is great. That is, of course, if we take Hisuan Goodra as a replacement for Goodra. If we consider them to be separate mons, then Goodra still ass.

Its movepool is great offensively, but lacks stat boosting moves like Swords Dance and Dragon Dance. Calm Mind and Nasty Plot could work but only if it fit thematically. And it should get Toxic Spikes since it learns some Poison moves.

The worst Pseudo-legendary can vary depending on the situation. In terms of playthrough viability, Metagross is the worst Pseudo-legendary for a playthrough, as Beldum isn't available until the postgame of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Tyranitar comes a close second, as you can't get Larvitar until Mount Silver, which is in the Kanto postgame once you have all sixteen badges. In terms of evolution levels, Hydreigon easily has the worst evolution levels, as Deino doesn't evolve into Zweilous until level 50 and then Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at level 64, the highest evolution level in all of Pokemon. These evolution levels would instantly disqualify Deino if I were to pick a Dark starter and a Dragon starter. Dragapult comes a close second as Dreepy evolves at level 50 and Drakloak evolves at level 60, which, while not as bad as Deino, would still instantly disqualify Dreepy if I were to choose a Dragon starter and a Ghost starter. In terms of typing, Tyranitar has the worst typing, as it is a Rock/Dark type, which has seven weaknesses, one of which is a double weakness to Fighting. But overall, Kalosian Goodra is the weakest Pseudo-legendary to use. It's so underwhelming compared to the others.

I’ve used goodra every gen and it is very versatile it’s great but at the same time it can’t cover everything. It’s biggest weakness is it’s physical bulk but it has served me as my special wall that can take on boosted sweepers.

I played a draft league once and goodra became a great player in my defensive core. The problem? That core was 4 pokemon, Chansey, Celesteela, Rotom Heat, and Goodra had to combine to support each other, and Goodra was the least effective member of the quartet. It needs others to do its dirty work, since it has a lot of strong attacks but no good status moves whilst being defensively bulky. A ball of stats with no direction
