Sega Lord X

Күн бұрын

Here I have compiled a list of games that I absolutely hated on the Sega Saturn. Sometimes a game just rubs you the wrong way. Be it technical reasons, a design choice, a certain art style, or a combination of reasons, you just can't enjoy them. Here is my list.
I'm now on Patreon! Help support the channel.
/ segalordx
Check out my Sega Lord X merchandise page!

If you would like to support the channel directly:

Head over to Facebook to hear me ramble about various things:
/ segalordx
Opening animation done by:
/ kevin.bhall.14
Episode Notes:
1. Sadly, I own all of these games. Even the awful Death Crimson.
2. Real games on real hardware via RGB.
3. The opening montage is a group of games I disliked, but not bad enough to be included in the actual episode.
4. I don't usually do many episodes like this one, but a recent play of a few of these reminded just how bad they were.

@@SegaLordX I'm very happy to see you rocking that same intro today. No matter where I am, no matter what I'm doing, the second I hear that intro I know what time it is. Sega Lord X time! Story time... ;) This past Christmas my fiancee and I went to my mother's house for the usual family dinner. Most of my immediate family on my mom's side were there in attendance. Like always we were all sitting in the living room discussing current events and how much 2020 has been a neverending suck fest. The conversations are generally very lively but not this time. Everyone was battle ready and it made for a very tense atmosphere. We were about to get into a nasty fight when my cousin, having had enough of it, broke out his phone. What did he do with his phone you may ask? Did he start playing Candy Crush? Maybe he wanted to use the phone as a fact checker? Nope, he started one of your videos which instantaneously stopped the fighting. Most of us like gaming and it turned into a giant Sega Saturn debate. You my friend saved Christmas dinner.

The shift to 3D was probably the worst time in console gaming . There was a fair share of shite on the saturn and PlayStation at the time . hardware limitations and lack of experience in making 3D games was 99.9999% of the problem.._
@shadowflash705
@shadowflash705 5 жыл бұрын
wilr1000 Hardware limitations weren't too much of a problem since other developers managed to make some impressive 3D games even on weak platforms like 3DO. What was the problem is that 3D was new thing and many decided to make 3D games for the sake of being 3D while they had no idea how to do camera stuff properly yet. We still getting gimmicky things because of logic like "system x can do z, let's shove z in any game". Kinect, motion controls on PS/Wii, touchscreen and touchpad controls where those just don't belong. Some games did those right, others "because we can", kinect never worked properly at all. Now it's VR... again...

They put out some great games on the Sega CD and Saturn that never made it outside of Japan, but most of them are from their Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Did you know the Sega CD has a port of SMT1? Great video, as always! The one thing I'll say though is that Death Crimson, while a steaming pile of crap, is actually fun to play on a CRT with a lightgun. The act of pointing a lightgun on the screen and pulling the trigger is inherently fun to do, even when they're nonsensical or as low quality as Death Crimson is. I would never recommend a purchase, but for the price of a blank CD-R, yeah its worth a shot (pun intended) if you've played all other lightgun shooters (a dead genre now!) and want something new, its alright to waste an hour with.

The Hulk, just as a comic nerd side note, was actually true to that era of the Hulk in comics. Banner was in control of the Hulk and he was a thinking man's Hulk. It made a better comic than it did a video game (since they had abandoned most of the common Hulk tropes). That's why when I heard the name of the game, I asked "Why?" That story line was a good COMICS story line but obviously made one hell of a bad game.

5:29 I don't know, if you know about dithering. It's a technique that makes transparencies and increases the color depth by making a pattern that looks like a screen-door or a dot-matrix and using a low quality video signal (Composite or RF) to bleed and blur the colors to create the effect. But since you are using the higher quality signal of RGB, where it doesn't bleed and blur, and is sharp, the effect doesn't work.
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 5 жыл бұрын
I'm aware. The effect still looks poor next to a real transparency. Even on a CRT via composite.
@silverwings21
@silverwings21 5 жыл бұрын
@@SegaLordX Oh I agree, real transparencies are better, but whenever there is a game that makes heavy use of dithering (such as Die Hard Trilogy) I have to play it via composite, it gets annoying seeing a screen-door, as oppose to a transparency.
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 5 жыл бұрын
I never really got to experience composite on the Saturn, even back then. I had a TV with S-Video when it came out, so I went straight to that. The mesh pattern is a bit more pronounced even in S-Video.
@silverwings21
@silverwings21 5 жыл бұрын
@@SegaLordX I didn't get to composite until the Dreamcast came out, before that everything was RF. 1st time I upgrade to S-Video was in 2015 when I finally got a CRT TV with the S-Video input (of course the newer HD LCD TVs had HDMI by this time). Yeah, S-Video is the point when the signal is good enough to where the dithering effect stops working. It seems only RF and composite are the signals low enough to do the technique.

The lack of a proper Sega NFL game on Saturn was inexcusable. Heck, Sega of America could have easily used the Worldwide Soccer engine,creating a football title with mostly 2D assets. These bad games have at least helped in leading to a good video. I agree with much of what you said toward the end. Life is too short to give too much time to games, even if others like them. I have had the experience of liking a game upon a second look, but usually there's a good reason to go back. Sometimes, it doesn't work out. And then there are games that many think are good, but waste too much time. I couldn't believe it when I first tried Okami on PS2 and it took about 20 minutes to actually get to the game. And people say the game gets good after 10-20 hours. That's not good enough for me. I know the updates have fixed some of its issues so I may consider trying it again at some point.

Ever see a really really ugly baby? Death Crimson was a labor of love like that. The game is a meme appreciated in Japan even today. It is the most successful of the bad Saturn games.

I was so scared you were gonna put Bulk Slash on this list for some reason. After hearing that a lot of people don't like the Road Rash soundtrack, I don't know what's real anymore.

Great video. Ihave the Hulk game for PSX and it is equally terrible. I found it in the bargain bin during the consoles life cycle.

I owned both "Criticom" and "Hulk: Pantheon Saga", and boy do they ever belong on this list! I almost never parted with any Saturn games, but I sold both of those suckers, and to this day I feel a bit guilty about the $2 I defrauded some kid out of at my family garage sale by pawning off Criticom on him. Criticom is unquestionably the single worst game I have ever played -- as a fighter, it fails to a legendary degree on every conceivable level. I would add one other game to the "worst of the Saturn" list from a technical standpoint, even though I actually had some good fun with it: "Die Hard Trilogy", specifically the rail shooter version. Certain levels on that had the worst framerate I've ever seen -- literally getting close to 1 frame per second on the snow level. It was still fun in a stupid "blow everything up" sort of way, but it was a technical clusterflump.
