Hahahaha you're complaining about 3 gallons of diesel motor oil in your truck. I drive a semi and my kenworth w900 with a Cummins motor takes 13 gallons of oil and the oil filter alone holds 1 gallon of oil. It gets super expensive when you're doing oil changes on a semi it's around $200-$350 per oil change. Right now I have around 800,000 miles on it and it gave me no problems at all yet because I maintain it a lot.

10 quarts isn't bad. I worked as an equipment mechanic at an airport. 5 to 7 gallons was the norm on our refuelers and big diesel pushbacks. The strangest charge on an oil change came from our forklift, 2 gallons of oil and a new T-shirt. I had to go to the accountant, dripping oil from sleeve, armpit and side to get him to agree to reimburse the cost of a shirt.

ive had both a 6.0 and 7.3 and my 6.0 also takes 15.5 qrts but the reason why the Ford engines take more is cause they are international motors and were made for school buses now the 6.7 is made by Ford but still uses 15 qrts but the new Chevy 6.6 uses 12 now I think but I'm not sure on it but the reason they have less is cause they are made by Isuzu with Chevy and gotta have a small oil pan to fit inside of those small box trucks

while we guys are talking about oil change I was 18-wheeler service tech the least amount of oil that one of those take is 32 quarts and that a Detroit and the most is a catapiller and those take 44 quarts and the catapiller has an oil filter that holds a 4 quarts just on its own
@kafoure93
@kafoure93 7 жыл бұрын
Pull the fill cap off before you drain the oil to help it drain faster. I own a Cummins and it holds 12 quarts with filter. Its a lot of oil but the upside is you can usually go about 15k miles(6 months) before an oil change is due. It changes depending on how you use your diesel.
@stayunique91
@stayunique91 7 жыл бұрын
A couple bits of advice: 1. You should change your oil at 5000 miles. The oil life indicator is set up for 10,000 miles. Most filters are not up to the task of 10k intervals. 2. Wix filters are garbage. Spend a couple extra dollars at Pepboys or O'Reilly's for a AC Delco. Mobil One is also acceptable. 3. Change that aftermarket transmission filter. Get a Allison Genuine filter. $10 and change every 10k miles. Also make sure you keep the debris magnet. I dont want to come off as a dick, I just want you to have a long reliable experience with your LLY.

Hey, I got a mack dump with over a million. That's fine with me if that truck last longer than I do lol. That's what I hear from a lot of people, the 7.3 was the best motor ford ever had. Don't know why they stopped making it.
@benjimenfranklin7173
@benjimenfranklin7173 7 жыл бұрын
bill carver they stopped using the 7.3 because they don't make it. Its a international engine. That's why it works so well. It was diesel from the start. Ford makes good stuff but the small diesel isn't one of them. But they are getting much better now they are getting the kinks out. The fuel system on these smaller engine is very high pressure and causes problems but the 7.3 isn't its old school.
@benjimenfranklin7173
@benjimenfranklin7173 7 жыл бұрын
bill carver your right. Now connect the 7.3 to Ford's 5 speed standard shift transmission and you have a tank with a truck body. Ford makes good transmissions. At least I thank so.

I wouldn't recommend filling the filter from the center. Oil flows from the outer holes towards the center. May take an extra couple minutes but will prevent any possible crap from entering your engine. Great video btw. 😃🖒

More oil capacity means more oil cooling capacity from the extra oil at the bottom. That's why the Jaguar XJR 4.0L inline 6 gas engine takes 8quarts, they built the engine to be able to run hard and for a long time and not worry about oil getting too hot.

Diesel engines may require more oil and it may cost a little more but oil changes are less frequent with diesel's compared to gas engines. Like 2-3 times longer. Gas is usually 5000, diesel's are usually 10-15k mileage wise.
@brianfidazzoaerialphotogra699
@brianfidazzoaerialphotogra699 7 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised your not running synthetic 5w40 in NY. It flows significantly better when your engine is cold. Since I don't drive my duramax enough to warrant an oil change more than once per year and make occasional trips to cold climates I believe synthetic is worth the extra cost. Delo Synthetic 5w40 can be found at walmart for about $20 per gallon and some carry the 2.5gallon jugs. Non-Synthetic is $12/gallon x 3 gallons + $8 for a filter = $44. Synthetic 20/gal x 3 + $8 filter = $68. Only $24 more to go synthetic route, about the cost of a half tank of diesel. Either way you still have a half gallon leftover in the Dmax next oil change will cost you either $12 less or $20 less if going the synthetic route.

I have one of those trucks with the gas 6.0L and it takes over 6 qts to change. A Dmax is only 4 additional quarts. A total non issue, even using a synthetic diesel oil. So what if you spend $60 on 3 gallons of 5w40 synthetic or $39 on 15w40. The real problem with diesels is the absurdly high purchase premium over the exact same gas truck. My truck was 1/3 the cost the same year and miles with the Dmax in it. Diesel is a fad for most buyers. I love the duramax and the cummins engines as much as the next guy but prices for a pre DPF diesel are bonkers. There is also the point that a dmax on synthetic diesel oil can go many more miles per change than a gas engine. Those 10 quarts of oil can take a lot of miles, many more than the oil life indicator would lead you to believe. The real "worst thing about a diesel" should be about how much it costs to change out your injectors when they go out, and they will.

You should try the heated remote dual over-sized filter set up that some of the HD units had installed as a regional option around here. Pushes it up to 4 gallons.

I run 4 gallons of Schaeffer's 5w40 full synthetic at almost $49 a gallon. All diesel owners look into a oil bypass filter setup. I run a bypass system and go 20k between changes. it's worth the investment in the end.

Dalton, I'd highly recommend the Proshot GoPro mount if you are worried about losing it. Just google it they have a website. Mounts right to the chin of the helmet and gives a cool viewing angle in my opinion. I use it in my videos now.

you could add that one bad thing about having a diesel vehicle is running out of fuel. ha ha. did that in my 83 c10 Scottsdale with the 6.2 and a 700r4. had to have another truck to help keep the batteries charged while priming the fuel system. oh and good luck changing the valve cover gaskets on those ha ha.

The worst thing about a diesel is certainly not changing the oil. Most likely a Hpfp grenading and taking out the fuel system or a stuck injector burning a hole in the piston.

So your duramax takes a little over twice the amount of a similar gasser, but keep in mind that you can go only 3-4K miles on an oil change on a gas truck but on a diesel it is usually somewhere around 10k miles.

In a gas truck you can go 10k but it's not recommended. 5k is what I and everyone I know go on a single oil change in gas silverados, s10, etc. 7k would be okay too.

You should check your dipstick before draining the oil. You may have and it just wasn't in the video, but if you're doing an oil change on a diesel you need to check the oil level/ check for dilution

My early '99 F350 7.3l Powerstroke took 15 quarts. There's a couple reasons why diesel motors need larger oil capacity but I'm not going to get into that since it would make a good video for someone to make with some research.

Perfect timing for seeing your video new to diesels and just had my truck in for an oil change 300 miles since the change and oil looks the same as black before change thought it would keep the fresh look for a few more miles no hard driving couple short trips, is that normal. well smaller trucks are falling by the wayside. wich sucks because with the milage cars get now it'd be awesome for a daily. family truck. can't haul a huge 7000 pound camping trailer. but you can haul a good bit of wood. a smaller car on a trailer. and still have a more comfortable ride even more than a half tonne and like yours 3/4 tonne. even though they are getting better each year
