"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Could even say both hardcore conservative and hardcore liberal comedy suck. Edit: "Hardcore liberal comedy doesn't exist/prove it/blah, blah, blah" - try venturing outside your bubble more often. Lol and they say the right is highly insular. Next time, don't trip over yourselve to demonstrate my point that both sides suck. Edit 2: Interesting how butthurt people immediately jump to the conclusion I'm clearly implying centerist comedy - whatever the fuck that is - is superior. How about next time, you don't trip over yourself to demonstrate my point about partisan hackery and Carlin's 50% of people joke?

In my experience that is ALWAYS what conservative comedy devolves into. Just complaining about stuff they don't like. Cuz that's what their entire world view is based around. They don't have any insightful critiques. They don't have any subversive opinions that make you think. All they have is complaining about how things are different now and they don't like it.

The beer joke is so confusing to me: He freaks out because it's a can of bud light, throws it away, offers it to the trans non-binary stereotype by tossing it towards him, then decides to drink it anyway. The joke is supposed to be, "LGBT things are bad," but in the end the guy makes a fool of himself because, by the time he opens the damn thing, it's been shaken up so much that it gushes all over his face. Let me reiterate: They created the Norm character as an audience proxy for conservatives, ostensibly so they could depict lefties as the soyjack and themselves as the chads -- and then made _him_ the butt of the joke anyway!? How do you fuck that up?

I think that they're "trying" to be funny by making fun of both sides. Because they're trying to be like the Adult Swim shows (South Park namely) which make fun of everyone. Except it's hard for them to even manage that because obviously the creators generally dislike the "woke" community and struggle to satire themselves equally. Just my guess.
@Shuizid
@Shuizid 4 күн бұрын
It's a psyop by the left, obviously!!1!1!! Norm is secretly gay for Charly - hence he only brought one gay beer for the two of them. But he is afraid others find out, so with Chloe around (why the heck is she in the living room on her phone when he is about to watch sports?) he has to act shocked and give it to the non-binary kid instead - assuming that queers will mindlessly approve everything queer (just like Chaz's dog allergy makes an exception for queer dogs). Turns out Chaz doesn't and while this triggers Charly because as the other closet-gay who wanted to drink the gay beer, he couldn't handle someone not doing the thing he craves but is afraid off. Shortly after Norm just takes the beer anyway, maybe feeling like the attention is away from him. As for the question if the gay beer splashing his face should be interpreted as a facial or a golden shower, I'm not sure yet. Need more episodes to figure out what exactly his kink is.

The Washington fan seems very accepting of his child transitioning. He mentions it nonchalantly and then only cares what sports team they cheer for. It also sounds like the main character is under house arrest for a _legitimate_ reason. Without context it would be *very* hard to tell which side of the issues the writers are actually on because everything is so over the top that most of the time the 'lib' characters seem more reasonable, despite trying *_really_* hard not to be.

The fine print under the Bill Maher quote specifies that he was talking about a different show, and there's a quoteless pic of Dave Rubin that was so hastily screenshotted from twitter that they didn't even remove the "follows you" tag on it. Above all that though is the fact that there are no official credits anywhere on this thing. I think what is particularly disturbing here is the deliberate imitation of Norman Lear’s All in the Family sitcom, which shows in the set design and the main character. All in the Family aired in the ‘70s, when union membership was high and the middle class was still robust. With this cartoon, we have an Archie Bunker clone parroting arch-conservative talking points that are bankrolled by union-busting billionaires, and the short ends with openly thanking one of the billionaires for saving comedy. If this isn’t a sign that we are in the second Gilded Age, I don’t know what is.

When Norman Lear brought "All in the Family" to TV in 1971, it resulted in a timeless classic because it presented a believable family dealing w/ sexism, racism, generational gap, etc. issues in an environmental backdrop of domestic (inflation, struggling to make ends meet w/r/t work & paying bills) & foreign (war - both cold & hot) policy, & the resulting tension of the differences of opinion under one roof. The Archie Bunker character generally seemed the 'butt' of most of the jokes, but he was written & acted as more than just a one dimensional bigot. That's the 'art' of comedy which conservatives seem to miss - when you approach humor with only an agenda, nobody laughs.
@JRain234

Good points. I also remember one of the tragic reasons it was popular was that way too many took Archie to NOT be the target of the points the writers were making but the steadfast hero in a decaying world. His racist lines were the most remembered and recalled by the white audience. "It's only a joke" when he used the N word, etc. But I could feel the grievance and resentment clearly (as a very young person in the 70s) and it's been present ever since, from Rodney King, Ruby Ridge, Branch Davidians, Militias all the way to Charlottesville and Jan 6th.

It would be fairly easy to make a conservative comedy show, but these writers are one-trick ponies. They just make one anti-LGBT joke every 30 seconds and somehow they think it'll NEVER get boring? Are they worried that featuring a LGBT character that DOESN'T get mocked once per minute would make their audience think they've gone woke? The reason South Park is funny is because when they do a trans episode, it's actually hard to tell if it's mocking trans people or anti-trans people, because it allows all its characters some level of humanity. But portraying genderqueer people as strawmen characters makes you just look like a jackass when you can't stop yourself from beating the dead... strawman.

Yeah the laugh track sounded pretty much continuous, and therefore even more pointless. Or maybe that was just my brain putting itself into recovery mode to make it through the clip.

If this is supposed to be based on true things, then the fact that Norm only has house arrest for making terrorist threats goes to show that conservatives are favored in the legal system.

He probably got house arrest also for harrasing women but for conservatives, this is normal behaviour, so he probably didn't notice it was part of the sentence.

Depends where you sit, from their perspective having all this transgender stuff being talked about in school is seen as terrorism. Both sides will fight perpetually and this rift will not be solved.

@@calvinn9214 Yes they agree they have a right to exist the problem for conservative types comes in where as I'm sure you know there are books and other subject matter that introduces transgenderism and homosexuality into their childs brains which they don't appreciate because they are ideologically opposed to it. I think they object because the material is introduced to the children when they are too young and also they disagree with it in general. Conservatives see the huge explosion in transgender identification being made by kids and they feel they have to protect their children from this conditioning. It is what it is. I personally think kids should be taught important info like science, math, english, history - all the stuff we learned in the 80s and 90s and I even felt that the sexed I got in 1989 was too early and this was just talking about things biologically. This was 7th grade. Again children should be innocent kids and not think about sex until high school but our society has gone away from this direction unfortunately and things have become hypersexualized. It was already like this in the 80s but things advanced even more as time went on.

When we thought it couldn't get worse than Reagan, along came Bush. When we thought it couldn't get worse than Bush, along came Trump. Never expect to reach the bottom with conservatives, because they always find a way to go even lower. It is almost - ALMOST - morbidly beautiful in this one true consistency of theirs.
