I’m right there with you on the EOS R. I’m using two of them these days and whenever I upgrade to the R5 or R6 it won’t be because of frame rates or resolution options, but because I want a joystick and thumb wheel again! I also want a registered AF point again, I hate having to “check and change” to go from a single point to tracking or back. And the DOF preview button on the front of the camera- on both my 6D and 5Diii I had that button programmed to switch between one shot and servo, and it was soooo nice to be able to grab either mode instantly based on muscle memory and not have to “check and change” like I find myself having to do with the R.

very interesting and useful summary of cameras based on real usage. The Canon C200 samples you created are very beautiful color-wise, but I was surprised that the camera movement looked choppy specially at 16:23 ... it looks like a succession of still images rather than a flowing video

Love this perspective Tyler. I feel like we've been on this camera journey together in some ways over the past 10 years. I'm hopeful for the C70 as it seems to be everything we've wanted in a cinema camera at a price point that makes sense. Now the real question is should I sell my C200 to buy one or not...I've already sold my C100s.

Why replace a C200 with a C70? The C200 seems to be superior
@tylerherrinton
@tylerherrinton 3 жыл бұрын
@@PedroMoreira2001 Superior in what way? Aside from shooting RAW. I don't shoot RAW very often with the C200 so I'm stuck shooting 8-bit as Tyler mentioned in this video. On the C70 you get 10 bit 4:2:2 and all the benefits of the cinema form factor. I'll have to get my hands on it but I don't see a ton of advantages of the C200 over the C70 for my workflow at the moment. I do like the ability to rig out the C200 but I'm not sure it'll be a deciding factor for me.

Great video Tyler, you make a very good point its often the cameras we use the most the ones we know the problems of. Its funny just a couple days ago I was frustrated and complained about Canon's lack of iso Invariance. I believe newer Canons probably perform better but the 2x 5Dmk3s at my office that I have to use are particularly awful in shadow noise. I'm very used to underexposing to protect the highlights and shadow lift in post in my Fujis as they're very iso invariant, but when I do that in the Canon it just gives me green and magenta headaches.

great video tyler, agree with all what you said with your points. a refreshing take on everyone negativity on cameras. there is one thing that i want to touch with you. what you said about colour science is correct, you don't need to worry about that because with enough information, you can always alter the colours to your liking. mind you i am talking about videos not photos. you don't need colour science in photos hahaha you know what i mean. however, i have been blessed to be able to shoot and edit alexa footage, and colour science do matter. alexa footage especially when you shoot in blue hour has these voodoo magic that has these nice blue green glow and make the subject skin tones pop and that just can't fixed with simple lut. although technically you can still produce the same footage. on other cameras you have to mask it to the skin tones and it will take a very long time for me personally to match it to the alexa footage. i have only a few footage of the camera and i don't want to delete cause i always want to make it as my reference. Overall, what I want to say is that what you about colour science is true, but the premise that colour science don't matter just don't ring in my bell. If you want Alexa colours then shoot Alexa, I don't think buying a Sony and then change it to Alexa colours just because they have enough information to grade is a sensible approach. Love to see your feedback and your podcast is dope and I hope you invite Kasey from Camera Conspiracies for your next guest.

FYI Mastering the touch bar is a skill. If you use it you'll eventually get good at it. Also, I use the Metabones Speedbooster which adds a little dial which adjusts the exposure while using EF lenses, I think you'd like it better than that RF spinny ring thing. (which BTW is also just a skill one could aquire). Cheers.

I like the the way Metabones does it, that makes a lot of sense. I could imagine learning the Touch Bar but the spinny ring changes when I don’t think I’m touching it at all. I don’t like having to constantly confirm that my settings haven’t unexpectedly changed

I love the message at the end - your camera should inspire you more than anything else! I recently got my hands on a LUT pack that nearly perfectly can match a Sony FS5 or FS7 to an ARRI Alexa in terms of colour, and seeing what possibilities that unlocked made me love those cameras again. I was booked in for a quick corporate video and there was no time to get a rental, so I had to shoot it with my A7II - a stills camera from 2014! But again, that LUT pack managed to produce a beautiful image, and it made me appreciate the gear I own all the more, instead of pondering what I could be using instead. I'll be the first to tell you that the A7II's 8-bit 1080p tends to look awful, and grading it can be a nightmare. But just because it's flawed doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be put to use :)

ANTO most youtubers including Tyler (don’t get me wrong I love his videos) only look at it from their point. Especially in computer KZfaq with mac people when talking about their computers, the look at it from a video creator standpoint or simple stills photography standpoint. People forget that “pro” includes animation and 3D modeling. Macs lack a lot of power for the animation and if it had power, it has horrible pricing and people forget that. Same thing with people who shoot canon, portraits and KZfaq videos are great on them, but for anything more than that, they continually let people down. Until the R5/6 came out, the lowlight on their cameras was super unimpressive and any Astro shots my friends took never had the same low noise that my A7III had. There’s so many situations where a canon just doesn’t cut it. But I’m glad that the r5 is changing this. The files have way more latitude than the original r, and the stills DR is great too. It’s a shame that the video on that camera was such a let down with the overheating.
