Use a DAW for live vocal processing? How do you deal with latency and monitoring? This is a wild world.
The way people are doing live vocal processing is changing. More and more shows are running this through playback techs and doing it in Ableton Live, and there’s a lot to tackle with this.
I had a lot of thoughts that I needed to get out, and instead of organizing my thoughts into an outline like I normally do, I just flipped the camera on and let it all out.
I covered things like:
Why this is becoming more popular
Dealing with latency and monitoring
Gear the pros are using
Setting up a redundant rig
Enjoy!

Hey, great video. Im a drummer and I have a mindset that solves problems in a lot of different areas. I’ve been working with my church and they have asked me to be tech director. And during the process of doing things better I’ve learned that I really enjoy putting the puzzle pieces together to create something great. My question is how do I make the plunge into learning more and possibly turning a interest in to something I do for a living. Thanks again for all you do.

I really like this video style, keep it up! My solution has been to automate all my vocal fx in Ableton and running the wet signals only to their own FOH channel. That way I can automate them throughout the set however I want, and I can even run them to my own ears and 10-12ms of latency doesn't bother me since its just a wet channel separate from my dry mic in my ears. Love your videos, I've learned a ton from you! Thanks!

Thank you so much for this. Do you believe if you have an M1 Macbook that this is still needed for live vocal processing?

Great video, thank you very much. Super interesting alternative. That said, I agree that the most rock solid way to do this is with external processing and UA gear, but I do think that you can do this with Ableton processing too using zero latency plugins. I think that we have more than enough processing power to do it and in a live setting and most vocal performers that are used to sing with AT are even used to a little latency. I use an Ableton setup live exclusively for main and background vocals in my band and we experience even less latency compared to our previous setup based on Tc Helicon Voiceplay vocal multi effect pedals. I know it is not optimal compared to an Uad setup but I think that an Ableton processing deep dive would be very useful for people with setups like mine. At the end of the day I spent a lot of money in plugins and iConnectivity Interfaces to switch to the very very expensive UAD counterparts and then extra interfaces 😅. I understand that you can't make everyone happy and that these content is a very small niche already, so I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your content, you're clearly the best content creator out there putting out useful videos and courses about theses topics in such an in depth manner. Keep the good work up!

Dani-I think you're right, there's still a need for "how to do this with ableton". I have two Ableton vocal processing courses on the list and both will feature the 4C as a big component to that. There's still a need for it-for sure. Two things I would still encourage folks to consider is: 1-Consider a dedicated computer for vocal processing... "Division of Labor" rewards you with things that consistently work and cause less problems 2-Always consider redundancy.. we've got to have an answer for what if and hope isn't a good backup plan. You can certainly ignore both 1 & 2 and it works but respecting 1 & 2 will let you go further. I appreciate the comment Dani!

Just make sure your zero latency plugins are stable! My chain had JST Grain Reduction 2 on and it caused Ableton to crash once (went through the crash report).

Hello Sir! First of all thank you for the video explanation, it really helps to know new things like the ones you explain. Now my question would be, seems that the Arrow works well for 1 vocalist in stereo, or 2 in mono taking in consideration the amount of input and outputs that it have, but what if you have a band with 4 singers that need live vocal proccess?... thanks!

Hey Will! One of your course students here. Came across a problem I can't seem to solve. The setup works for one vocalist, but what happens if you have two or more? I bought an Apollo x4 (4 MIC inputs, plenty of outputs) and no matter what I try, reverb / dly effects from aux buses (related to Mic 1, connected to Input 1) bleed into other outputs dedicated for the second / third / fourth vocalists, as it seems that Aux buses cannot be panned / routed to outputs or Cues to only send effects of the corresponding vocalist. Since AUD limit you (pretty much in everything, but in this case, specifically) with only 2 aux buses, I have Vocalist 1's reverb / dly's in everyone else's signal and everyone else's reverb's in Vocalist one's output channel. Which is obviously less than ideal to give FOH a channel that also has everyone's reverb & delay effects on top of the main vocalist's of that channel dry & wet signals. What would be the solution to the problem?

@@fromstudiotostage sure, sadly we have a festival gig in 10 days so reverb & delay automation plans had to be axed for this one.

Awesome video! I’m currently using the audio 4c and play audio 12 to run tracks and process vocals. Now I’m interested into looking at the UAD gear. I don’t believe the UAD interfaces have any midi I/O though, which is a bummer as I have a tascam TA-1VP that I mainly use for tuning. My audio 4C controls that unit via midi. I wish I could use the tascam to tune and an Apollo interface to automate delay throws but don’t necessarily want to add another piece of gear onto the weight of the rack. Maybe I should sacrifice the tascam for the Apollo?

Thanks for this video! Do you recommend running your vocal processing on a separate laptop from playback? If so how would you run 3 laptops simultaneously (assuming 2 for redundant play back and 1 - for now - for vocal processing) with the same midi controller?

Hey Will! I’m curious. If I were to run tracks and do vocal processing. Would I be able to use the Apollo and Ableton 11 together, and map via midi inside of Ableton to change to the exact key of the song? I know this is possible with Antares. Just wondering if UA is capable so that I can take some stress off of my Mac. Thank you for the time!

If you simply have a one computer and one Arrow interface set up and your doing this Live Autotune thru Console... What is the optimal way to send your microphone signal to FOH from the Arrow? Do you just use one of the L/R monitor Outs on the back of the Arrow to send to FOH as your microphone output? I'm a little lost on the In's and Out's of it all. Bit of a noob. Thank you.

I love Ableton. But… For stage and live use … Gig Performer is all you need. Vst2 Vst3 Au Low latency and low Cpu I really dig the routing and midi capabilities. The UI kinda sucks but who need flashy graphics anyway
