Hi. I'm not an expert, but I think the main reason the axe is shape that way is it doesn't get stick in the aluminum when you have to escape from the cockpit of a crashed plane.

I've seen several like this no cut as a fireman's axe, but with no hole like a thinner Web in it.

When I was fishing the The River Welland about 45 years ago I found one of these by the water's edge its handle sticking out of the mud.I only found out recently there was a military disaster at that very field near a village called Tinwell during WW2. A Glider and an American plane apparently collided during a training exercise killing many Polish paratroopers and American airmen so I'm presuming it must have been left behind after the clear up, no way of proving it was from that disaster though. I still have it.

I saw one on Ebay the other day and I was going to get it but new restrictions don't allow antique weaponry to be shipped overseas.

My dad pulled one of these out of the scrap pile at the steel works he worked at,some time in the 70's.I have been using it as a camping axe for 30 or so years and it is now part of the tool/recovery kit in my 4X4. I always thought it was a firemans axe and only recently learned of its true origin. All the markings are still clear and I'm interested to find out what they mean. It has a "C" in a square with 27N underneath and an upward pointing arrow beside that.I know the 27N is a distribution code.Below that there is a symbol made of three ovals, one horizontal beneath two slightly diagonal on top of it,this is underscored.Below that are the letters A.M. which i believe stands for Air Ministry. If anyone can offer further information on these symbols it would be greatly appreciated.

Nice, the markings apart from the raf code, raf acceptance ,also has codes to show the rubber handle is insulated to 20,000 volts....other axes by different makers have slight differences in markings, the c in square is for the chillington tool factory.

@@historicmilitaria1944 Thanks for the reply. I have just been looking at some sights that have been helpful. The consensus on C mark does seem to mean it's made by Chillington Tool Co. in Wolverhampton. The arrow ,what i thought was an arrow,is actually /1,so 27N/1. After seeing pictures of several axes and closer examination of mine the ovals symbol has an arch between the two vertical/diagonal ovals and some have different configurations of three dots above that but mine may or may not.Too close to numbers above so most likely not. And yes the handle has the 20,000 volt and patent number markings. I was surprised to see one for sale on a couple of sights for 160 pounds/$290au.I'll have to start taking better care of mine.

that is a problem with bladed stuff...even tho you can buy from outside your country..there is always the risk that customs will confiscate it...they do turn up at garage sales, flea markets, car boot sales etc.
