The WW2 Targets of the New Forest - Part Four

5 жыл бұрынDuring the Second World War, a section of the New Forest in Hampshire was annexed, closed off from the public and used by the RAF as a bombing range. Many bombs, including Barnes Wallis' 'Bouncing Bombs' were tested for accuracy there.
Dave Ford is my guide and together we explore the remaining artifacts of those targets in this four part series of walks.

Fascinating videos! I knew about 'Grand Slam', but it adds something to know that this was where Grand Slam and also the Tallboys were tested. It's regrettable that those weapons were not available earlier in WW2.

A great series of 4 videos! You hit the jackpot finding Dave. He is very pleasant to watch and listen too. Just the sort of person one would like to find on a rainy afternoon in a pub and spend a few hours listening to him about his local knowledge and tales he may have.

It was my friend, F/Lt Trevor Muhl the bomb aimer who dropped the Grand Slam that brought down the Bielefeld viaduct! He is buried in the church yard 200m from my house. I spent a lot of time with him when I was a teenager as he taught me all about developing and printing B/W photographs. He was a really nice, humble guy.

+Richard Vobes this series would be worthy of viewing in secondary school history classrooms. It always staggers me how quickly we can forget 'recent' history. The London docks are a case in point. Thousands of people worked there until the mid 1960s, now the few remains are an enigma. Just how did warehouse cranes work? Not in the way you would imagine, but that's another story!

Really interesting stuff - it amazing how many little air raid shelters still exist in people’s back gardens - hopefully they will be easier to remove than that one!
