The York Ghost Merchants is one of a number of magical shops in the street called 'The Shambles', York, England, dating back to the 14th Century, other shops include 'Potions and Caldrons' and 'The Shop that shall not be Named' all as far as I could see, selling Witchcraft and Wizardry :-)
In this tutorial, I take you through the process of shooting at night and the processing necessary to achieve a great image, night time shooting can be a real challenge as contrast can be very high. I also use Generative Fill and the new remove tools in Adobe Photoshop (Beta) to tidy up the image and then process into a final image in Adobe Lightroom.
If you would like to follow along you can download the RAW image here, all I ask is that should you share this image, please respect my Copyright and give credit to myself Jamie R Mathlin :- drive.google.com/drive/folder...

Fascinating tutorial Jamie, thank you. Always enjoy watching how other photographers process their RAW files. I would have lightened the whole image a tad more, but that's probably because my eyes are more used to the extra light in a city setting at night and I haven't visited The Shambles yet. I'll always be a Nikon lad (D850, D810), but your unprocessed Canon RAW file is incredible!

Thank you for the comment, it is very much appreciated, with regard to the Canon RAW, this only applies to the newer R series of cameras, I have the Canon R5, only just changed over to it from my previous Sony A7R4 which is also a stunning 61MP camera, the reason for the change was that Canon has finally caught up with Sony, but I prefer Canon's colour science.

Excellent tutorial. Shambles was originally a street of butchers (that's where its name comes from), before all those ridiculous modern shops invaded! My mother who was born in Shambles in 1915 would be horrified at what has been done to the street,

Thanks for the comment Mark, you are so right, Lightroom and Photoshop have developed so far since LR5. Personally, I think for the price of four cups of coffee a month having the latest Adobe CC photographers pack, is extremely good value for money. And remember, whatever your starting subscription is, as long as you do not cancel, the price does not go up, I have had my subscription since 2016 and I pay $7 😀

@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Жыл бұрын
you have a keen eye Peter !! and you are completely correct, you will also notice that the window reflections have also not been corrected, and to be honest with you there are a number of other faults with this final image, the truth is, is that I try to keep my tutorials down below 1 hour, in the tutorials I demonstrate different technics covering a number of ways for post-processing, but to get this image to a level that I would print it onto a large canvas, or sell the image, it would need a lot more work, perhaps 6-8 hours. So what you will find is that in my other videos, I cover the specifics associated with refining the sky edging for example, or blending layers in the case of the windows. Therefore, in summary, I try to create a good-looking image using a broad set of technics within 1 hour, to try to maintain viewer interest, Sorry for the long response, however, I very much appreciate your question, as it is a very valid point 😀

This is the first time I've seen noise reduction used on a shot made at low ISO. Is the noise due to the long exposure, i.e., would it not be present in a shot made with a shorter shutter speed?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Жыл бұрын
Thank you for a great question, to answer, with the style of post-processing I 'push' the shadows sometimes as much as 5-6 stops and therefore we have to contend with equivalent ISOs of 3200 or 6400 in these shadows, furthermore we are nearing the limits of what modern sensors are capable of. Based on this, noise management is very important. You may also ask, why I do not use the noise correction at the end of the processing, to correct for any noise created by the processing itself ? well, I have tested the new denoise function on dark high ISO images before and also after processing and the results are the same, as the denoise function corrects the data and not the visuals. So sorry for a long response, but this is why I use denoise at the beginning 😀
@oldtvnut
@oldtvnut Жыл бұрын
@@jamiermathlin Thanks so much for this explanation. Amazing! Now I'm wondering if my Canon 5D Mk IV has enough dynamic range to push shadows this far. I have made shots in dim church interiors with very high ISOs that came out well, but of course the highlights were not so bright as in your example and the whole shot was at ISO 12,500 rather than just the shadows being pushed there.

Why leave Sony? Better menus? Better resolution glass?
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Жыл бұрын
Good question, the straight answer is colour science, the Sony has more megapixels, better ISO sensitivity and great glass, but I changed to Sony because Canon was not keeping up 7 years ago, since then they have caught up and the new RF glass is excellent, small and light. To be honest almost every camera made today is excellent, so I could have stayed with Sony and been happy, but the A7R4 was getting towards 3 years old and I needed a new camera and the trade-in values were excellent, so here I am back with Canon and very happy 😀
@scotboy1297
@scotboy1297 Жыл бұрын
@@jamiermathlin I was also thinking of moving from Fuji to Canon since they woke up to mirrrorless, and Fuji now has 40 meg in X-T5, as well as third party lens support. Disappointing that Canon is resisting third party lens companies from making RF glass, it's prohibitive cost to me, so I am avoiding.

Curious why you decided to leave Sony and go back to Canon? Was it lenses? Ergonomics? Menus? Image quality? I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on that. To me image quality is the most important factor and for me I find Sony’s raw files to have the most flexibility in post processing.
@jamiermathlin
@jamiermathlin Жыл бұрын
Great questions, there are a number of reasons, 1. I prefer the colour science with Canon, due to the Bayer Matrix pattern being different to Sony. 2. I changed to Sony 7 years ago as Canon seemed to have stopped innovating at the time, now Sony seem to have reached this state, I had an A7R4 61MP which was coming on 3 years old, so I was looking to update, the Sony A7R5 offered the same sensor and dynamic range, with improvements in the focusing, but to be honest for what I need, this was no improvement. 3. 61MP was a very high resolution, but as the pixels were so small the camera did not have as good ISO and noise performance as you may expect, my previous A73 was much better, perhaps 2-3 stops better, but only 24MP, so the 45MP Canon Sensor seems to be the best of both worlds, now Canon has court up. 4. The new Canon RF glass is lighter and they have a wonderful 14-35mm F4 L which is stunning, plus a 70-200mm F4 L that is the same size. I had the Sony 16-35mm F2.8 stunning lens, but heavy, and the 70-200mm F4 Sony was twice the weight and size of the Canons. 5. I fancied a change. Sorry for the long reply, but these are the reasons 😀
