by saying best you are collapsing all the qualities into a single word. I have played football for 30 years. I see truth when I see him. Best is such a small word. He could play a single year and the way he made us feel cannot be described by numbers. You can invent a perfect machine that plays for 20 years and scores 100 goals a season and they wouldnt be better than Maradona. Not necessarily. Watch how happy he is when he scores. Note how he is the most agile and responsive person on the pitch. He's like legend mode in pes or fifa when a player reacts faster than all the ones you control. And his elegance is unmatched. It's effortless. So many players try so hard, forced tricks, artificial movements. Diego is just expressing himself. Dinho was right to call him Wizard of Wizards. It's funny you have to be a wizard to fully understand what he is doing. Poor people who are gifted at football understand best what he is doing. I think it flies over many a person's head.

I Strongly disagree and those who know the Argentinian football of those days will agree with the following. In WC 1982 Argentina had a great team ( World champions 1978 + Ramon Díaz and Maradona) and still could not make it. In WC 1990 Maradona played injured most of the tournament, Bilardo never included great players such as Ramon Diaz, Redondo and Argentina (although playing horrible) made it to the final, you don't play a final in a world Cup just by luck. In the 80s and 90s Argentina had brilliant players in its league but it was not in the mainstream, that is why they think that the 1986 team was average. If you see every player of that squad you will notice that they played in great teams and were very successful locally and internationally. A few examples of it, In 1984 for the intercontinental Cup Independiente beat Liverpool in Japan (the midfield of Independiente + Maradona was the midfield of Argentina in 1986). Maradona's idol (Ricardo Bochini) played for Independiente in that final and he was probably the best Argentinian player after Maradona. He was a substitute in 1986 (in any other national team will be the undisputed #10) but by then Maradona was simply Maradona. So, Bochini even being an amazing player superior to iniesta and riquelme together had no chances. In 1985 in the intercontinental Cup Argentinos Jr draw 2-2 against Juventus and lost in PK shutout with Laudrup & Platini playing for the Italians in a game that could go either way, the only player that made it to the world Cup (1986) in such a brilliant team was Batista as again Argentina had too many player to pick from. In 1986 River won the intercontinental Cup vs Steua Bucharest in the intercontinental Cup. Although might have not be the best European opponent by then, once again an Argentinian team was in the other side. We can also name brilliant players such as Ramon Diaz, Fillol, Marangoni, Funes, Trossero, even Passarella who could never play in that world Cup (1986). So Maradona was definitely from another planet, the best ever, period. Argentina would not have win without him, as there were amazing teams in 1986,, but was not an average team at all. I don't really think that Argentina would match the quality of players of those days. From 1970 until 2006 Argentina produced unbelievable players being the 80s probably the best times for the Argentinian football.
