ABOUT US
We’re Colin and Samir, creators based out of Los Angeles California. We make videos about the creator economy, and the lessons we’ve learned over 10 years of being on KZfaq. We also interview creators and try to get to the bottom of what’s working on KZfaq and where the creator economy is headed.

in reality hollywood is just trying to find something original. This is similar to the movies pre-2015 I don't understand why script writers in hollywood still have a job after 10 years of crap due only focusing on picture quality and wokism.

Soo what you think he got lots of help from his parents or someone? I doubt it’s the same with the film industry, but it’s a known thing that the music industry will prop up talent and pretend they had a humble upbringing when in actuality the labels orchestrated everything.

@@meridiand81 You missed the point. That is exactly what he is saying: that the director is NOT a typical KZfaqr, or "just" a KZfaqr. Since he is not only a KZfaqr, that by default makes the movie a little bit less impressive. Imagine Steven Spielberg making a video and uploading it on KZfaq lol, that wouldn't be as impressive as we would already expect something great from him.

I'm so glad "nothing, except everything" blew up on this site! It never made sense to me why short films and indie animations are so difficult to view outside of film festivals. Isn't the point of making something to show it to people? Idk, it feels like some upcoming directors would rather take the "prestige" route of having their movie seen by 100 film critics/journalist rather than sharing it with real audiences of potentially millions on KZfaq. The algorithm is fickle, but if your content is great then people will find it... So glad Wesley is paving the way and I hope others follow suit :)

I think the thing most missed is that the guy thought of himself as a filmmaker first. He just happened to find luck uploading to KZfaq. I think this is were most creators go wrong. They call themselves "KZfaqrs". KZfaq isnt a job. Its a place to upload content. He also self funded hos own stuff. Many creators on this platform want to get paid to create there content. It should be find a way outside of KZfaq to make money to fund your own stuff. This is how all business works.

Spot freaking on!! It's much much harder to literally start from nothing and 'just" be a KZfaqr. The most successful people on this platform are those who already had a lot going for them in whatever profession they were in and they just started uploading here. Look at all the immensely popular guys like Jake and Logan who were huge on Vine, fitness guys who were champions before starting their KZfaq channels etc.

It is great to see creators breaking out into larger spaces and making things that are new and fresh, but as you said, there's still going to be a big group of people who want to stay here. Myself for an example, (but not on this account) create lowe-budget, easy turn-out short stories every week and it's working out great. Staying low budget means low pressure. Having a weekly upload schedule means if I fail one week, I can move on quickly. It's allowed me to experiment and have fun with a lot of projects, and I bet there are many more out there who can find their own sweet spot as well. Love seeing how the industry is growing and becoming more exciting like this!

Seems like the basic equation hasn't changed... you want to be a Hollywood director, spend $50,000 and a year of your life making a short film, then hope that it truly rocks AND everything goes your way afterwards. Samir can do this right now if he really really wants to, but it's definitely not a path open to everyone.

7:36 I mean… if you don’t consider A24 a “major studio” then I guess this is true? Like idk who told Wesley this-or if he just thought it was a fact himself-but the kid that made the “THE BACKROOMS” shorts got a deal with A24 to make a feature literally just last year. And he was *still in* high school and will seemingly still be in high school while directing (17yrs old)

Rackaracka actually didn’t pitch A24 for financing. They were financed by several small Australian production companies and A24 later bought the distribution rights after it premiered at Sundance. They basically went out and made it themselves hoping to find a distributor later. I think that will be the model that most “KZfaqrs” who want to bridge the gap will have to follow.

This is been happening for many many years now. just in case you don´t know. you have for example Fede Álvarez , who did a short film call "Panic Attack", that got Hollywood attention and then end up directiong movies. His latest one is Alien Romulus. Or you have David F. Sandberg (ponysmasher on YT) who did a short call "lights out" and then got to make it as a movie. End up directing The Shazam movies. Andrés Muschietti with the Short "Mama" end up making a movie about it with Guillermo del Toro and then did the IT movies. and I am sure there are many more. This is not new guys. But it's good that you're drawing the attention of new people. Cheers! :)

It's fascinating to observe the extent to which social media has democratised the entertainment industry. From influencers hosting and interviewing celebrities on red carpets, to their presence at prestigious events like the Met Gala and other major fashion gatherings, and now, even in the realm of filmmaking. Wesley Wang's journey exemplifies this shift, demonstrating how platforms like KZfaq empower creators to bypass traditional gatekeepers and forge their own path to success in Hollywood. I wanted to emphasise the importance of Cord Jefferson's speech at the Oscars, urging the industry to invest in low-budget films. He specifically said "I understand that this is a risk-averse industry, I get it. But $200 million movies are also a risk. And it doesn’t always work out, but you take the risk anyway. Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 $4 million movies.” I hope the industry recognises the value in supporting the next generation of filmmakers, regardless of budget size. After all, Wesley's story illustrates it perfectly.

I was one of three who thought seven. Definitely blew my mind at the time. That was one of the best KZfaq videos I ever saw, I almost thought it was professionally made movie

he had such a memorable film too. everyone who watched it remembers the thumbnail as well as much of the story behind it, its so much different than anything you see on the site. i dont agree with this guy being considered a "youtuber." he's a film maker and this was a whole operation. it doesnt feel like it was made for youtube, its not mrbeast, its not begging for views. hope he goes far in life, interested in seeing longer projects from him

There’s a difference between knowing to make a project for a small budget for a platform like KZfaq and then being able to translate that to Hollywood. Everything has a cost in Hollywood. Being able to ask for favors or sidestep certain steps that normally incur a cost as a KZfaq creator wont fly in the professional setting. Everyone has their hand out when you step up to Hollywood. Even if you initially are able to maybe make something for cheap, if you have any success and start making good money, that will quickly change, cause soon as the people helping you out see the money you’re bringing in, those favors go out the window. Plus, the unions would never allow a small KZfaq production company come in and make a cheap project by paying people less or sidestepping normal procedures. So I think that people like Wesley will quickly learn that their 45k project will balloon exponentially once they have to play with the big kids, and that’s why after all these years of KZfaq creators, we haven’t seen more of these stories and I doubt it will explode beyond a handful here and there. In the end it will just come down to good ideas and talented people, not whether or not they can currently make content for cheap, cause asking a friend to help shoot a video and hiring a union camera team are two very difficult scenarios.

Saw the thumbnail of this video and got curious, so I went back and watched the short film only to realize I had watched it 7 months ago, when it came out, and commented about how it resonated with me since I am in high school as a senior to which Wesley responded. Insane how I forgot about this, just like how the character in the short asks, is it better to forget or to remember?
