Honestly that part of the movie felt like a genuine LittleKuriboh parody and it made the scene so much funnier to think that way aa if they intentionally made the dialogue to reference the abridged series.

The creator of Yu-Gi-Oh, Kazuki Takahashi actually admitted he regretted making Yugi's hair like that, because it was a pain to draw, over and over again. That line likely referenced that.

Last time I went through GX I made a list of all my fave dub lines. It was very, very long list. It's just nonstop hilarity. These are just three, one from each dubbed season. Episode 13 Jaden: Ready or not, let's duel! Wheeler the Dueling Monkey: Duel! Syrus: Whoa, it talks?! Head Scientist: Please! That would be COMPLETELY unrealistic. His helmet reads his mind and talks for him. Episode 67 Jaden: See, I went to outer space and I chilled with this dolphin-man. Then he gave me these totally rad cards for my deck. Bastion: Poor guy's gone mad. Hassleberry: And I thought dueling a Spanish chef with a bag on his head was weird. Episode 127 Echo: He was not born to serve - Adrian was born to rule! Courage, intelligent and honor, nobody has more; and nobody is more underappreciated. He has such value. Adrian can't see but he, he should head the Gecko Financial Group. And then one day he can rule the entire world! Pegasus: Ooookay…I was kinda with you until that last bit. 20

@@kyurei4478 I think that might be the case simply because they didn't want to show a major character, especially the protagonist, drinking alcohol. It's ok when minor characters do it though.

@@fedrikrose2277 I see. I wouldn't see the point in the impossibility to do it with Yusei though if you go as far as using a drunk deck with other characters. It sounds counter-productive to say the least. Although maybe their drunkness was voluntarily left unclear for the young viewer.

Yeah, honestly 4kids often gets a bad rep but they did some fair censorship sometimes. It's not all black and in some situations I would have done the same as them. They offered us some gold times like this.

4kids wasn’t that bad. They had to change things to be fit for American television. Outside of that, they were a solid dubbing company. There’s a reason why they were bought by Konami themselves and still do work for them

As an English-speaker who grew up in the days of "4kids bad," I've watched and read YGO in many forms over the past 20 years, and I can honestly say that when it comes to the anime version of Duel Monsters I'd much rather watch the English dub than the og Japanese, at least for seasons 1-4. The original script is really dry in comparison and the duels are extra drawn-out and painful to get through (they had to hit the full runtime and have those multi-parter episodes of course.) 4kids added a lot more lightheartedness, humor and fun to the dialogue that was missing since the manga and the Toei anime, and in my opinion it's way more entertaining to watch than the og version of the DM anime. And after the manga, it's what I always recommend for friends who want to get into YGO.

To defend the hot dog=taco bit from vrains, if you were about to go into a life or death scenario with your best friend you’d want to diffuse the tension with a joke to. If anything I’d say that’s a better way at showing their friendship than what the original did even if it’s a bit odd for playmaker.
