An unseen army of 50,000 Coptic Christians collects Cairo's trash at 2AM and take it home to Garbage City.
• Why are only Christians recycling Cairo’s garbage - in a country that is 90% Muslim?
• Why do you want to avoid hospital waste at all costs - especially in Egypt?
• What can you learn about a city from its garbage?
The Zabaleen have created one of the most efficient recycling systems in the world. They re-use 85% of Cairo's waste from over 12 million people.
Until recently Garbage City - their home - had no water, sewage, or electricity.
The men collect, the women sort, and the children start helping as soon as they can walk.
Everything they need to live is found in the garbage - from toys to food for their livestock.
The garbage gets separated into hundreds of categories - from forks to dolls.
They’ve weathered many crises - during the swine flu epidemic the government ordered every pig in Egypt to be slaughtered. The Garbage People almost starved. Waste piled up on Cairo’s streets.

Break your heart? Why? They choose to do that. It's their job through tens of years. They inherited from their fathers. You make me feel that someone torture them

There are several nonprofits that work with them - if you Google "zabaleen" and "nonprofit" you will almost certainly find them. Thank you for the kind thought!

Do they have showers? Could they use a community hygiene bank that provides them with showers, reliable clean water for drinking, sanitation products and housing as well?

We took Uber to visit the cave church and could not continue reaching there, our Uber opens the window to ask pedestrians directions and if we’re correct, I could not bare the smell, had to return back worrying thatno Uber or taxi will come pick us up, later I heard u have to go with a tourist guide. Really felt unsafe

Just because they were born as Egyptian Christians in the 21st century they suffered this curse. Had they been born elsewhere, even in a 3rd world country like India or Greece, they would have had a better fate. Sad to see citizens seperated on the basis of their faith. What else they can do but convert? They will get a better life. There's no other way out. Thats why i guess, the copts and people of other faiths in the Arab world and in Central Asia are disappearing, the same way muslims dissappeared from Al Andalusia, and are dissappearing now from China and former Jugoslavia.

Basically it stems from the desire not to see their people shrivel up and die and just become another group of people who were snuffed out throughout history.

Indeed, God does exist because you exist & I exist & all beauties & garbage exist. We forget that we're living on earth not in paradise & one who believes will be in paradise & nonbelievers in hell.
