The shot of them walking through the pretty garden, living a peaceful domestic lifestyle within view of a death camp is chilling. The themes here are eerily relevant.

I have a map of the Auschwitz complex. They're right next to Auschwitz I which is the oldest part of the camp.

It's parallel to how many people live today, except this uses Auschwitz to demonstrate an extreme example. How many people are buying material things and immersing themselves in alternate realities everyday (by using distractions like TV, social media, music, fashion, consumerism, etc.) to distract from what's going on in their own neighbourhoods. We go and work at a job everyday but do we know the true intentions and dealings of the companies we work for? Are we turning a blind eye to how they could be harming others directly or indirectly? When in our comfy offices in a high rise building downtown, do we ignore the homeless, starving and sick people laying on the sidewalks while we walk to our cars or to the train station, as we wear our designer clothes and look down at our phones in order to not acknowledge the pain going on around us? This movie could take place in any of the homes in any neighbourhood in any city today.

One of the most powerful films ever made. The most shocking moment you will SEE is when Hedwig, the commander's wife, yells at one of the servants to clean the floor. On the other hand, you will hear noises, and you will see smoke. And it will make you feel extremely uncomfortable about what the Holocaust was. You will make your own images, and you will contemplate at how inhumanity shows itself.

Is that a good or bad thing? If it means we get something experimental (which this looks to be) or different from t he norm then I'll take it all day long. Better then the Hollywood conveyor belt which is just repeating and canalizing itself these days. Plus its Johnathon Glazer. He's a must watch director.

A big difference is that this is close to reality whereas The Boy in the striped Pajamas was pretty far from reality (and had some bad messages: such as that murder is only bad if your own child gets mixed in with the victims)

This is what mankind has done to itself through division, the thought that one is better or worse than another. There is only one problem in our existence, and that is the false belief (any belief) that one individual or group or tribe is superior to another. This internal movement (thought-belief) manifests itself outwardly and the world of man reflects it in an ongoing brutal activity. Look at the results for yourself. Search out history and one finds this has always been the problem. Simply seeing this shallow repetition deeply in the heart ends the need to attack, defend, or be 'superior'...

I wonder what the scene of the woman walking towards the death camp is about. But yes this film is understandable as the family had no choice but to accept the insane cruelty next to them, when orders come from higher up and you identify with the cause it is human nature to abide no matter how insane the abuse is to another human.

I didn't watch the movie yet but from what i read , this is very close to what is happening today, Isrealis lives happy life on top of the graves of Palestinians and the Palestinians who survived would live in an open air prison(Gaza), since the beginning of this genocide we saw Israelis celebrating and dancing, living their life and even worse mocking Palestinians while Isreal is committing one of the worst atrocities of our life time.

No. It´s not very close. Even if the palestinian people are suffering under violence and suppression for decades - it is different. Why is it so difficult to accept the shoah as a unique crime (from a histrical point of view)? You can`t equate both.

Concentration camps and "open air prisons" don't have amusement parks or luxury houses. And Jews didn't commit massive terrorist attacks and massacres on Germans, nor did they ever pass on refugee status to their children, nor did they reject every peace accord after losing every single war.

@@martinhb9459It is this detachment from compassion that the movie directly addresses. As long as we hold the capacity to tolerate fellow man suffering, we hold the capability to repeat what happened in auschwitz. It is not the same NOW, but it can be if we allow it to.

@martinhb9459 it's relevant when the Israeli state attempts to somehow use the shoah to justify the racially motivated atrocities it is committing today

No, the Palestinians are similar to the Germans. They both started a war they couldn't win. As a result, their civilians suffered and they lost land. Germany at least had the sense to finally surrender instead of continuing to fight (although a few Germans did that, too).
