25:42 It's insane that at this point he still didn't realize you can block low by crouching. It's really funny when he over relies on save states so much that he makes the game way harder for himself. This happens several times throughout the run, but I feel like 29:10 to 33:38 is the most egregious because he had decided to leave the dungeon and go to the 3rd town. So all he had to do was use a Continue, lose 194 xp (really not that much), and walk back to the 3rd town. Walking out of the dungeon and then walking out of the swamp took WAY longer than just using the Continue would have taken.

He saw what AVGN did against Dark Link in his Zelda II review and tries to pass it off as his own finding. How sad.

If you don’t think Phil used guides after that final boss, there is no help for you. The sheer psychopath attitude as he claims that he discovers the corner tech which almost everyone knows as he constantly called the final boss “the hardest in nintendo history” was laughable. This particular TIHYDP has ALL of those things, all the while showing how truly inept and terrible he is at ANY game he plays with his horrible decision making, lack of raw skill, and mostly impressively; save state abuse. 2:29:10 - I dont believe this for a second because of how phil did it and what he said. "You dont need no powerglove" is a ref to AVGN when he played zelda 2. If you watch that around when he's talking about the powerglove phil did Exactly what AVGN did to defeat the shadow link. It was 100% so obvious that phil did the same strat and claimed it as his own. Also, seeing as he's done this multiple times you can never trust this numnut. Another reason as well is phil was already getting ready to run to the corner the second the boss fight started but stopped himself and tried to fight "legit" the second time he instantly went to the corner. No trying spells, no attempts at anything, nothing. Just straight figuring it out on the spot. Phil tells on himself so easily. lol

Phil and I don't have a lot of overlap when it comes to games but there's a few he's done that I know just inside and out and him struggling so much on this game - which isn't really all that hard - is the highlight of Phil to me.

Speaking as a man from the same generation as Phil here, I find it bizarre he struggles on a game that was part of the gaming generation we hail from. This game is rough and does you dirty here and there, but it's still really good - you just have to go slowly - Phil always surprises me with his ability to worsen any situation and then some.

I had a blast watching him playing this game and knowing he was going to have an unpleasant surprise with the all the little quirks of the game, although I think I got ear damage from hearing the low health beep for so long.

Knew it was gonna be interesting when he opened with saying he never heard the Zelda 2 theme. While many people have never touched it or don’t like the game, the main intro theme has been pervasive in game culture stuff since the games release

I wonder if his spells of silence are brought on by low money and hes basically just pouting. Either that or he genuinely thinks sitting around quietly is hilarious.

I did use the crouch strat my first run, because I was annoyed by the path to the palace and the dungeon itself. That being said, my next run I decided to attempt legit and have done so if I pick this up since. It's *HARD* but not Castlevania 3 or Ninja Gaiden hard, so I'm fine, also there's a good strategy I did when in an attempt: Dark Link has an opening in jumps, which is how you hurt him fighting legit. Save states aren't as offensive in this game (in my opinion) depending on how you use them. Like, having one each dungeon or a checkpoint (like getting a key or unlocking a door) is fine. Also the fact you're kicked back to Hyrule Temple for game over makes a no-save state run rather frustrating, so yeah. I do still think you should try a raw run at least once just for the experience. I genuinely like this game. For one, it's better translated than the original Zelda (which honestly I'm not a fan of at all and I've beaten both quests) and CV2, making it automatically more fun to talk to NPCs and it helps you find secrets (for example, you can get Thunder just playing - an NPC mentions that someone stayed behind in Kasuto and same goes for the master key). The gameplay loop is exciting even if very hard at times and is rather intuitive with how you're supposed to do things. For the time (considering Dragon Quest wasn't localized yet), this was a very good example of going toward proper translations eventually. The fact you don't necessarily need a guide (but having a map handy isn't a bad idea) to find things and progress is just such a massive selling point for an NES RPG with just how many awful trappings were made at the time to make games last longer. A little trivia to end my comment: the area you end up in descending Death Mountain is the entirety of the original TLOZ map. It even has the shattered Spectacle Rock that led to Ganon's lair and here you break the second one. This game was retconned with the Hyrule Historia to fit at the very end of "hero falls and isn't preserved" post-OOT along with the original and I believe A Link to the Past. This is also one of the few true direct sequels in the franchise, the others being Majora's Mask, Phantom Hourglass and (before the retcon) Link's Awakening. Always great compilations, Derich. This was the first Zelda game I played myself after having watched my mother play the original. I was 5-6 years old and I was able to beat it. Mind you, this was on original hardware so no save states or internet, only patiens, skill and grid-paper to make maps.
