I remember taking my partner's car back to the garage that did the MOT, we dropped it off with the salesman part of the business and within 5 seconds of him talking I was 100% convinced he was a con man. They did the brake pipes on the MOT, we took it back because the cabin was filling with exhaust fumes after they did the brakes, they'd knocked off the PCV pipe. They fixed that and then when we got home we noticed the wheel was soaked in brake fluid, I had a look and it was dripping from the connector... We took it back and met the salesman and he instantly claimed that they never touched the brakes it wasn't helped that his language was something you'd expect a stereotypical con man to sound like. They did fix the brake pipes but Recently somebody got their brake pipes done there and they crashed the car and died on the drive home so hopefully they'll get investigated. Luckily I know a good mechanic but some reason my partner doesn't like going there (probably because it's in the middle of nowhere so it's difficult to get home)

If that A1 has had the dreaded emissions fix (dieselgate) software put on the car, that'll probably be why the injector failed. Injectors, EGR, DPF and Turbo are all common failure points after having the emissions fix software installed. So common in fact that Audi offered a 2 year warranty for those parts from the date the software was installed if I remember correctly. I actually commented on your video when you first bought the A1 and said you need to check that the car does not have the emissions fix software on the car and if so it needs removing to reduce the risk of injector, DPF, EGR and turbo failures. I don't think it's a coincidence that it's now needed new injectors. Removing that emissions fix software will result in fewer DPF regens, better mpg, better low down power, reduced risk of failures and preventing diesel fuel oil contamination. This is the result of it overfuelling to help with emissions but leads to excess diesel making it's way into the oil so you need much more frequent oil changes to counter this.

Has there been any knowledge on what exactly VW did to fix the emissions? I don't know but I suspect VW increased the EGR rate drastically (lower oxygen content in the cylinder to make NOx), hence why EGR valves fail... and due to carbon buildup, the fuel might not be burnt completely, causing increased particulate matter, causing DPF to fill up quicker, hence needing to regenerate quicker. Also more PM might clog the nozzles causing failures in injectors... and of course, turning diesel into coal means lower power and decreased MPG.

@@khalidacosta7133 There is a full document available online somewhere which goes into detail about what the emissions fix software does, why it does it and compares it to the non-fix software. There's a reason why the emissions fix software is voluntary and comes with a warranty. It does not provide any benefit to you or your car what so ever.

I'd like to add that the deisel software update on VAG engines were different depending on what engine you had in your vehicle, some, like my 2012 2.0 140bhp golf only required a minor software update, and mine was done free by my vw main dealer. in the 30,000 miles i've done since then, i've had no issues at all, infact no issues since the car was new at all !!! however some cars etc required some replacement parts, different swirl flaps etc and an update etc etc. i would suggest that the way the car is treated/driven plays the real difference between a reliable car and a bad one, as does proper and regular servicing. also a deisel car that does less than 25,000miles a year will tend to soot up, clog egr's etc, and will cause injector problems too. these deisel engines need to do decent engines to remain economical and reliable, if you do less than 25,000 miles a year, get a petrol car, you will save money. Tip for VAG Diesel engines. change the glow plugs every two years, no longer. Also, as my car is out of warranty now and well over 100,000 miles, since the warranty ran out, and being a reasonably experienced mechanic, i service it myself and it takes me the best part of a day to service it properly . i always use genuine v.w. parts with the exception of engine oil ( i think VAG low sulphur oil is rubbish) and i use the equivelent spec castrol edge fully synthetic. yes it is expensive, but it doesn't break down inbetween servicing loosing viscosity , plus the additives really look after the engines seals etc. plus i wish people would do the dpf regens properly ! it matters !! love the vids and your honesty, and i hope my tips above prove usefull to someone ! all the best !

@@dockerandy Only the 1.6tdi needed new parts as far as I'm aware. If you knew what that 'minor' software update was doing you wouldn't want it on your car. You need to read the document that's floating around which goes into detail about what the software update actually does. I'm surprised it's even allowed, but then it's voluntary which I guess helps cover their backs.

Another massive reason the injector fails on the 1.6tdi is people don't keep up with the service intervals in my opinion a regular oil filter fuel filter and oil change will see least amount of problems the fuel filters start breaking down and particles go through the injectors and clog them up also the electrical units on top of the injectors fail my mate has the a1 has just turned over 187k still has original injectors and clutch and turbo has had zero issues only issue he had is Bluetooth connection sometimes loses connection but can live with it haha

Those injectors are shared over all of the VAG diesel engines, so if this is the reason you won't buy another A1 TDI, you'll have to stop buying VAG in general. I've been a VAG mechanic for 13 years now, and while it's not uncommon for them to go bad, it's not something you see every day (or week) either. Typical of those "warranty" scammers to decline replacement of one time use parts like torque to yield bolts, crush washers etc. Why do I call them scammers? Well, because I have yet to see them cover anything. Leaking rear main seal? Sorry, we only cover head gasket failure. Leaking head gasket? Sorry, we don't cover head gasket failure. Leaking panoramic roof? Sorry, you should never buy a car with panoramic sun roof.

Regarding the Rio key. My Kia Ceed was doing a thing where the remote wouldn't lock. If I put the key back in the ignition and wiggle it, then pull it back out and listen for an audible click as the key is extracted, the key remote will lock the doors. I think something is sticky in the barrel, so the car thinks there is still a key in the ignition and won't lock. Just a thought. Could be very wrong.

It's probably just one wire on that 500 mate, just slit the rubber boot and rejoin it with a connector, fill the boot with silicone to repair it, peg your warranties at the legal minimum of 30 days, your sticking your head in a noose with 6 mths on old cars, your customers won't realistically expect any more, I try to help anyone out no matter how long but I'd charge after a mth, for parts at least, as your realising diesels are a nightmare, petrol cars don't give you much trouble but diesels are a nightmare, just done a turbo on a pug this week myself.

The biggest claim I made was for a Passat. Purchased it as a temporary run about. It had already had its clutch and timing belt done. However would have this horrible vibration. Garage was a vw dealer and said they couldn't find a issue however did note the vibrate. 3 times they had this car and still wouldn't delcare what the issue was. There lead tech came out and within minutes stated it was the DMF. However they said they wouldn't repair it. Raised it to Volkswagen UK directly. Quickly turned around and the repair was offer. They also replaced the clutch also as they deemed it a poor job overall. Total cost was 1300.

You seem to spend a lot of time on post-sale customer care which is great for the customers and your reputation but do you think this will be sustainable long term once you expand? I'd be of the view that the reason you have the warranty in place is so you don't need to get involved?

Looking at non-VAG prices online (£120/150) has the garage bought/fitted a set of 4 - I appreciate the refusal of just 1 bolt, seal, etc. Might be worth finding out in case another injector goes. People are commenting about German car manufacturers - I worked for one who couldn't accept how much better Japanese suppliers were in terms of product quality/low failure rates compared to their traditional German suppliers - good engineers but probably complacent. Customers are probably happier to buy with a recognised warranty.

@@reeced5521 Reliability is generally poor particularly injectors, its rare to see a car that hasn't had the update for emissions in the UK, turbos, EGR and dpf problems are common even at low mileage and seem to have problems around 40k cycles, rough running after injector replacement where independent garages haven't coded in the new injectors is common too.

Having owned an emissions fixed car myself, I had it reversed as soon as I found out and did a fair bit of digging myself. From what I found, people started experiencing issues shortly after having the fix software installed. Whether that was a coincidence or not I couldn't tell you. But my 2.0tdi felt like a different car when the software was reversed to a pre-fix state and I had no running issues up to when I sold it at 133k miles.

I think nowadays reliability is inversely proportional to price. If there's a car parked on the hard shoulder it's a premium brand not a cheap one. I would guess it's because the extra money, rather than going towards quality, goes towards (unreliable) bells and whistles.

The British market perhaps understimates the marketing skill or perceived quality that the Germans have engineered into their badges. German s are very gifted business people and excel in marketing skill. Being status concious as we are in this country makes us suckers for perceived value...a marketing skill. There is difference between perceived quality through marketing and mechanical strength. Kia Hyundai and Toyota Mazda are today bought more often in the German market than ever before. The Germans are not prolific in Asia Africa or the Middle East...and most cross the Sahara in Toyota's and Mazdas..very few in Amaroks or X3.

Have you ever been to Japan? Probably an overstatement, but nearly half the cars in Tokyo seemed to be German. Benz & BMW seemed to be especially popular. Even here in Australia, with the end of local car production & GM/Holden pulling out of the market, the Germans are now doing a lot more volume.

@@adamanthony7465 Interesting. If OZ is any guide, there's probably no standardised system. Here. the auctions only seem to give full reports on their near new & ex-lease cars, but they will advise if they know anything major is wrong with a car. In my state at least, auctions are also exempt from having to provide a warranty where it's normally required (10 years/160,000kms), and they do make this clear to the public.
