This one is also interesting because it was one of the first encounters of Michael Piller with Roddenberry's philosophy of future humanity, because in the original script by Moore the boy was emotionally grieving. Roddenberry put a veto against it because human beings would not be shaken like that by such an event and emotionally break down, and clashed with Piller. Piller than did a rewrite with the team by having the boy be dealing with the trauma in a composed way but as a coping mechanism. Piller than admitted that the script got better because it made the story unique and offered a new perspective on the issue, which otherwise would have been an usual melodramatic story. In general Piller became a fan of Roddenberry's "box" because it often forced writers to come up with a new solution and new perspectives instead of using the usual tropes for Hollywood story telling. And I agree.

Excellent analysis of this episode on loss and grief by Cirroc and Ryan, the FFA and #ChatPack in the Live Chat! This episode is a rough one for many folks, as we saw with Faith in the FFA. Sometimes I can watch this episode and sometimes I can't - depends upon how life is going at that point in time. Appreciate the thoughtfull response from everyone on this one. yeah as many are saying......I choose the fantasy where my daughter is still alive or in my life by alternate means. I've fantasized about going back in time where we're promised that she won't die on us and the 3 of us living as a family. My ex-fiance left me afterword. She said it was too painful seeing me every day. It was a reminder of what she lost. I've had other fantasies where we're both trapped in SAO (the real SAO where death kills you in real life as well). The game even identifies her as an angel. While I can logically understand how 10k people get trapped in a full dive VRMMO like SAO, I don't see logically how an angel would get trapped in SAO. lol

The kid ended up a mobster in Robocop 2, a result that was kind of disappointing / disturbing to the TNG cast.

yeah I was never fond of this episode. I usually skip it. I admit it's not as bad as I remember. But still.....meh. I'm guessing in advance a 6.2. I can relate a little bit. I lost my daughter 23 years ago and I haven't ever gotten over it. I kind of shut down. I've never really been able to move on. So in a way.....I beamed down to the planet.
