One of the best episodes of trek ever. And Walter is a treasure ! Always liked him. Wish they gave him more to do in the original series.

I was always led to believe the title came from the Shelley poem that mourned Keats' death: Adonais

Correct.

Possibly the reason we don't see Walter in his chair for Act 1 is because he is shown (just after the title sequence) working on some kind of device in front of his console. For continuity purposes I guess we are suppose to believe he is still working/repairing the device. I just had a look at the episode and he is there just not in his chair. We only see him in the first shot following the title sequence.

Wow, such a great perspective on this episode from my childhood. I now need to rewatch it with that in mind. It will only be my 30th or 40th rewatch - so a fresh perspective is nice. Loved Walter's BTS and commentary, Cirroc's history lesson, and even Ryan's pums weren't so bad (especially after Glen Iverson's in the FFA!). The FFA was awesome and love hearing all the different takes on the show and the message that people got out of it. ONE LOVE #ChatPack!!

One thing I'd like to call out in this episode of star Trek is in the book "The Autobiography of James T. Kirk" it is mentioned that Carolyn Palamas gets pregnant and names the kid Troilus. This episode happens in the span of a day!

There's also the component of questioning traditional authority, specifically religion - of humanism vs theocracy. Of forging one's own path instead of deferring to gods and priests. One of the recurring themes of Trek.

ohhhhhhh tytyty to the algorithms of YT!!! TY to this channel too! 💓 Walter was my first crush.He was 22? I'd have been about 16. Nice to know he was a bit slow to mature, I was ahead in maturing, so that was perfect! He was the older man 😊. Lucky me! Am I really listening to this interview? NO! 😅 After all these years, I am just going to stare at his beautiful eyes and enjoy his serine being. This is not star struck,hero worship. Wallter is a rare real one.

This was also one of my favorite episodes, especially when I watched it as a kid. My favorite part was when the enterprise was shooting fasors at Apolos' throne, and the music that was playing and as he was also firing back lightning at the ship and Spoke say "More power to the shields, and the enterprise won the battle lol.

The first episode of Star Trek I ever saw from beginning to end. Excellent to hear Walter's input on the episode, it remains a personal favourite of mine! Sending love and appreciation from the UK! Also, the first Google translate which phonetically pronounces it as 'ah-don-as' is correct ;)

Absolutely love the 7th rule’s podcasts and videos - so pleased to see you are currently reviewing the original series as well as TNG! Are you going to review every single episode of both? Great to see Walter Koenig too, a true legend. Hopefully you can get him to join in for as many of your TOS reviews as possible. It’s also interesting whenever we look back at an older, classic series such as TOS and examine it from so many angles, so it’s great to see you guys doing that.

Yep. There is no Adonais in Greek mythology. That is a name used by Shelley (I think) in a poem or writing. Adonis is correct. And I know the pronunciation because a relative is named Adonis.

I want to preface my statement that I've been a fan of Star Trek from it's pilot episode since age 8 . I'm glad you had your day with Shatner - Odysseus. Sorry, Mr. Koenig, Adonis is pronounced: /uh-DON-is/. FYI - I came to this podcast from a very poorly written article about Walter getting Bill to accept the use of the Greek Gods. The article makes Walter sound very petty. It was to distract Adonis so Adonis wil let go of the ship.

There was a fan film based in the Trek universe that Walter did where he just chewed up the scenery. His character had amnesia. Great acting, and it made me sad that he was underutilized in the series. Anyone know where I can watch it again? I can't remember the name of it.

I'm kind of amazed the everyone commenting on this episode seemed to pick up on the "sexism" and "misogyny" of the language, but no one mentions the glaring scene when Palamas finally rejects Apollo, and he uses his god-like powers to "overcome" her. Folks, she has NOT given her consent to Apollo, and he reacts by attacking her. The scene itself implies RAPE, which to me goes way beyond just what words might have been acceptable in the 1960s but "don't age well.". Um, did y'all just miss that, or are we just more attuned to words rather than actions when using our so-called "progressive standards" in judging Star Trek. 🤔
@awilliams17015 ай бұрын
it's why I don't care for it. He forces himself on her and she says she loves him. But when she changes her mind he attacks her. I don't like it. I like the continues sequel (with the same actor, but much older) much better. That one doesn't have any of the 60's bs that makes it hard to watch this episode. They even mention that she was killed in the line of duty.

Yeah I really don't understand her. I mean the actress did good with what she was given, but I don't understand the character. Some random asshole basically kidnaps you and you fall in love with him? WTF is that? Her character's behavior is why I hate this episode. It does have its moments. I love Uhura in this episode. It's one of the few times she goes beyond "hailing frequencies open". But the whole he loves me so I automatically have to love him back even if he's an asshole? That's so 60's. I love the sequel in star trek continues. She is mentioned as killed in the line of duty. They actually got Michael Forrest to come back as Apollo. They had to explain why he was 50 years older looking in only a couple of years, but it made sense in the contenxt of the story.
@kennethbaker52234 ай бұрын
She fell for him for the same reasons that Marla fell for Khan. They studied men of the past for a living, and were given attention by the very people that they studied, and admired. Women falling for a-holes isn't unique to the 60's. lol We see it every day.
