The reason the apple cider vinegar did not work is because she missed the very important step that was adding a squirt of dish soap. The red color and acidic scent of the vinegar attracts the flies, but it is the soap which kills them.
@emuhill
@emuhill Жыл бұрын
All the dish soap really does is it reduces the water's surface tension making it easier to drown them. I don't really use it in my own apple cider vinegar trap because it isn't necessary for my trap to work. The dish soap is only necessary if you have a small dish or a jar lid filled with apple cider vinegar. The idea is when the flies land on the apple cider vinegar with the dish soap, they sink into it and can't get back out. Thus killing them. My trap uses tall narrow wine glasses with a small yellow funnel on top. The wine glasses are filled with the apple cider vinegar to attract them. The funnel more or less traps them once they get past the funnel. One time out of ten the fly is able to find their way back out of the funnel and escape the trap. However, nine times out of ten the fly is trapped inside the wine glass until it starts to die. Once that happens, the fly will fall into the apple cider vinegar and drown.

I used a mixture of regular apple cider vinager, dish soap and sugar and it traps them like a charm. I don't even poke holes. I use one of those plastic takeou containers and leave it open. In just one night there was like 20 of them.

@322msg 2 жыл бұрын
I use the apple cider vinegar all the time with great results. A couple of notes about your method.... first the holes should be smaller, I use a toothpick or a fork to poke holes in the plastic. Second you should add a dash of dish soap to whatever liquid you’re putting in your jar. I tried it without adding dish soap and the fruit flies are sometimes able to fly into the liquid and fly back out again with no problem. Adding the dish soap creates a barrier that traps them inside the liquid. I also don’t use straight ac vinegar I always water it down to conserve.

I use apple cider vinegar, a little water, dash of sugar and couple drops of dish soap. Takes out fungus gnats and fruitflies. I don't even cover the bowl. Although putting plastic over with small holes makes sense.
@souItripp
@souItripp Ай бұрын
Adding a drop of dish soap does not create a "barrier" in the apple cider vinegar. It breaks the surface tension so the fruit flies can't walk on top of the vinegar. With the single, small dab of the dish soap breaking the surface tension, the fruit flies sink into the apple cider vinegar and drown.

my recipe for ACV is: 1/2 cup warm water, 2T ACV, 1T sugar and about 6 drops of dish soap to break up the surface tension of the liquid. I think the dish soap is important.

Have you ever had a fruit fly or fungus gnat issue with your Aerogarden? I did last year when growing lettuces but not herbs. Though the room also had houseplants that may have had water sitting in catch saucers. Sticky traps and better watering helped a lot until most indoor plants went outdoors. Hoping to avoid a rerun this winter. Thanks for all your helpful videos and experiments and experience !

Apple cider vinegar combined with a little dish soap worked for me. The very first day about 30 flies were all over the trap. They got in there fast and could not figure a way out. Now, three days later I see only one or two outside of it and none alive inside. I have two young cats, who have probably caught some too but those traps absolutely have worked fast within three days. So don't give up on the Apple cider vinegar right away, try different brand if one doesn't attracting them enough. And don't forget to break the surfaces tension with dish soap. Anyway, I appreciate this video. It's always good to learn of more options.

Those look more like Phorid Flies than Fruit Flies. Fruit Flies have big red eyes. Phorid Flies are black/dark brown and tend to be attracted to decaying organic matter or fecal matter...that's why the ACV didn't really work all that well. Hope that helps 💛 Love the science experiment!

I use some narrow wine glasses filled with apple cider vinegar and some small yellow funnels on top. Fruit flies are attracted to the color white and yellow. So the funnels used should be that color. They are also attracted to those colors of light as well. Another thing they are attracted to is carbon dioxide. Makes sense as something fermenting will give off a lot of that. So maybe some apple juice with some sugar and yeast mixed in would make for a better bait than apple cider vinegar. As for the trap I use, it is quite effective in killing fruit flies. However one time out of ten I have observed that some of the fruit flies that land on the funnel inside the trap are able to crawl into the funnel opening and escape. Nine times out of ten the fruit flies stay in the trap until they die. I suppose I could put some double sided scotch tape on the funnel inside the trap to prevent any escapes.

I used the exact same vinegar mixed with lots of sugar and a few drops of dish liquid and it worked the best because they love sweet stuff…the dish liquid is heavy and once it sticks to their feet they can’t fly back out of the jars. The plain vinegar of course doesn’t give off a sweet smell. Plain sugar water also works. I used 10 bowls of this all around my kitchen and living room except I didn’t cover the bowls which is the best way but you need to make sure the bowls/jar’s are filled all the way up to the rim because once they land they can’t fly back out.

I brought home fruit flies from a large supermarket chain. When you go to the onion bin you will see onions that are starting to rot, same thing with a bin for the avocados they are over ripe. Unknowingly at the time, I bought produce there and then had a problem in my apartment. I have never been one to leave fruit out on the counter...and I am compulsive about cleaning, actually anal about cleaning. I did the apple cider vinegar, a drop of dish soap and water...worked great but I was still seeing the infant fruit flies around. I learned that the adult fruit flies will lay their eggs in the very top of my indoor plants. I read if you allowed the soil to dry out that would prevent the eggs from hatching. I also sprayed my houseplants with Neem....which actually damaged my plants. Last resort, I threw out my lovely houseplants and bought fake plants. I have done everything including pouring boiling water down my drains. Pouring bleach down my drains. I bagged and tied off my garbage so the trash bag was not open and I threw out my trash every day. I will no longer buy my produce from that supermarket and I am going to make a complaint because it is obvious they have a problem and they are not addressing it.

I was not expecting to hear of sugar as a bait ingredient. Does sugar even have a 'scent'? (I'm talking about white refined sugar, rinsed of all aromatic residues). But there 'would' be one important contribution that 'could' be at play here: The sugar would surely activate any yeast present, (and there is ALWAYS some incidental yeast in anything exposed for a bit of time...) It would be interesting to try some sugar in your seed solution. I think only a pinch is needed. Any more is probably waste and more that the yeast would use. [If you do, do a comparison; one with and one without sugar. Need to use a single container for the seed juice, to then divide into two traps, so the initial seed solution is the same, then add sugar to just the one...] Color was mentioned; maybe Red wine?? [I was going to joke that they didn't like cheap wine (but that sounded insulting) LOL] I enjoyed the video, thanks!
@jonchalk3855

My go-to trap is the Apple cider vinegar. But not the "best" kind. I use the cheap ones. They are usually more pungent. Yes, the holes need to be smaller than shown on the video. I usually use a simple toothpick to make just a few holes. Usually about 4 or 5 holes. Less if the lid is small. The drop of dish soap is to break the surface tension of the apple cider vinegar, which makes the fruit flies sink when they land in the liquid. The "seed guts" water also works for the same reason. It has a pungent fruit smell that attracts them to the liquid in which they die. The two main parts: the bait and the trap.

I know the feeling. While hydrogen peroxide drenches worked to kill a lot of the larvae, it was very time-consuming. My savior has been the BT bacteria in Mosquito Bits. Fungus gnats and mosquitos are closely related so the same bacteria will attack both’s neurological systems. You’ll get way fewer adults and the adults you do get will be small and sterile. If your local Home and Garden store has the disks, you can break them into pieces to spread them out and/or save some money. You can also crumble them to make sure they get into all corners of your cone. The effect will kick in the most after 2-3 weeks and then you replace the disks after a month. Make sure to keep this up to control the population. If you get the dried corn type, supposedly they kick in faster (24 hrs) but only last 1 week. The best thing is BT is harmless to any other organisms, including beneficial microbes and bugs. Just don’t accidentally kill the BT bacteria with a hydrogen peroxide drench! Hope that helps!

Instead of using my canning jars and wasting saran wrap, I use any container like a bottle from soda, water, juices or the butter tubs- that you were going to throw out. I use the 10 oz Welchs juice containers. Pour in the liquid trap solution of your choice. Take a sodering iron, put 1 hole in the center of the cap. Put the cap on. And place the container where you see them. And I rinse them out and reuse them as I need to.

Flies swarmed me as I tried to slice cranberries for dehydrating. I put some of the mushy berries in a water bottle an put a paper funnel in it. and it attracted so many of the little buggers! Rotting fruit seems to be the best attractant. Ithink the idea of the ACV is that Vineger is made from fermentation, but ACV is pretty much finished. There is no sugar to ferment and nothing to attract the bugs to it. Seed water and rotten fruit seems to be the best. I guess i'll add some water for them to drown in to the bottle and hope it keeps the population down. Thanks for confirming what I suspected.

Another thing I did was have a spray bottle with half vinegar, half rubbing alcohol. When they all landed on the tops of the trap, I would spritz them down killed them. It was easy to rinse the top off and check back in hour. That really knocked down the infestation.

Inside the house, the sticky papers get rid of flies and gnats. I have had no success with apple vinegar inside the house, no matter the brand of vinegar with sugar and a few drops of detergent. The insects inside my house are attracted to the sticky paper. The gnats got inside my house from a house plant I bought. I have used hydrogen peroxide and need oil etc. The thing that works best is the sticky paper and diatomaceous.

I left 3 bowls - one with mushy banana in water, one with some old wine, one with a bad onion (since I saw that they liked it). And I left 3 yellow sticky traps around the kitchen, and one over in the tomatoes waiting on the table. THERE WAS NOT ONE IN ANY OF THAT STUFF. Maybe the smell had not festered enough yet. Yet, they were out to say good morning to me when I came downstairs. This means war!

The little demons!!!! I used tomato seeds/pulp in the jar I used. @Bthinks mentioned they had success with kombucha, it might be worth a try.

@@The_IndoorGardener I didn't have any fermenting tomato Gunk on hand last night so I was just trying something. But when I get home tonight I will make it a point to save some seeds just for this purpose. LOL!

You next step is to clean the area the flies are infesting. Remove sources of food and areas for them to reproduce, like sink drain catches and trash bins. Clean your trash bin every night, make sure no dishes left in sink, and keep sink clean. You also need to make sure your towels are clean, as females lay eggs in not only fruit left on the counter but on filthy kitchen towels as well. You will often see the fruit flies having sex on your towels too. Wash with alcohol and sanitize with hot water.

Ripe food is what humans have eaten for all time. Never heard of the cave man battling fruit flies.

Why is your video backward? You have your wedding ring on your right hand and you turned the lid on the little jars the wrong way to close them. And at the beginning the letters H2O were backwards; later they were right.

This is what worked for me: @carikshawn4201 @carikshawn4201 1 second ago @GuysPestSolutions GOOD AFTERNOON and I LOVE YOU. I used Ant and Roach Killer by EcoSmart and it is an Organic Insecticide. I sprayed my sink and bathroom as soon as I got off listening to you which was around noon yesterday. I didn't turn on the water in any sink and resprayed the drains before I went to bed as well and I DO NOT HAVE ONE FLYING GNAT ANYWHERE. This morning I boiled water and poured it down the drains and before I go to bed this evening I'm going to spray again and will probably do it every few days just to be safe. YOU BE WELL and from now on you are MY friend...those little creatures were everywhere and I was planning to day to put off a Hot Shot bomb and now I don't have to. I live in Houston by the way so sure hope others read this. Today is July 28th, 2023.
