Very good video. I was wondering what happened when I engaged neutral by mistake on my motorcycle and then tried to engage second gear. The gear would not engage and the shifter moved up and down on the foot a couple of times before I let go. So what happened would be the synchronizer ring would not have caused enough friction for the gears to reach the same speed. This caused the shift dog to move back and forth a couple of times. The gearbox seems unharmed by my silly mistake. But I presume they are built to take a certain amount of abuse.

Sorry to say your explanation is wrong. A motor cycle gear box can only change ONCE without realeasing the clutch. The gear change mechanism holds its position until the clutch is released If it happened at almost any speed , going from top to bottom gears would have disastrous consequences . Depending on the speed your flight through the air would , for second or two , be very exhilarating

Please have a look at the synchronizer sleeve as well. If it is worn then the clearance will increase and the shift fork might not keep it in place. The most probable cause is however the wear on the spring loaded detent balls that keep the shift linkage in place.

If live in extremely cold area, cold weather can lead to a transmission that shifts hard when the temperature drops, transmission fluids with poor cold-flow properties can thicken and cause elongated and hard shifts until the fluid has warmed up enough to flow properly. Switching to a high-quality synthetic transmission fluid will help. In extremely cold environment, the gearbox oil is cold and therefore thick. This makes gearshifts, which involve parts moving easily within the gearbox, difficult as the parts don't move easily. After a time engine heat from the nearby engine or just friction heat up the fluid making gear shifting easier.
