One thing I noticed was that you said you were trying to combat ablism where you see it and I think a really great way to do that would be to add subtitles to your videos. I’m not sure if this could fit your October readaton, but I think it would be so interesting to make a parallel between The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe and O Enfermeiro (The Attendant’s Confession) by Machado de Assis, because Machado was inspired by Poe’s work but with an ironic twist that’s so typical of him. I read both short stories in the same day and it made me so happy with Machado’s talent. His writing always blows my mind.

Maybe sign language isn't taught in school because it's often too specific? By this I mean that many countries have a completely unique sign language. Sign language is not like spoken language such that someone learning German in America is learning the same German as someone in England. Spoken language has more of a standard. Whereas someone learning sign language in America is learning a completely different language than someone learning sign language in England even though both are in "English."

I love watching your videos because the recommendations I get from you are always so unique, diverse and are books I have never heard of. And I love when you show your outfits 😂.

I Seji, I found your channel recently through a suggestion from Jen Campbell and I really like your videos and appreciate so much that you always try to challenge your point of view and expand it! These days I came to similar conclusions about the importance of expanding the reading list about racism, feminism etc etc out of the American narrative (not to delegitimize it). I was thinking and thinking about how to approach these topics on my podcast (in Italian)... I want to talk about racism and diversifying your readings, but at the same time I want to to have a broader perspective for various reasons: I live in Canada, I'm Italian , I want to understand how racism plays out in Europe, and in Italy as well... Thinking about these topics, Adichie's ted talk "The Danger of a single story" was very illuminating for me and pushed me to broaden my perspective even more, and add other views to US ones! So for example I committed myself to start studying the Italian colonial past... something that you never really study or talk about in Italy...but that I think it's very important to understand racism in Italy in the present... Your right about all equality and I hadn't considered this aspect. Also I really agree that all race discussions are around America's. They have their own issues and experiences.

thank you for saying that you read multiple books at once, I feel so weird when I only hear that it's impossible to do it bc I just can't read only one anymore except if it is a fast read bc I just get so anxious to finish it off, while with more books I can slow down and read a bit of each and feel acomplished by completing a smaller goal each day. I also just figured out that I'm mood reader so TBRs only work for a couple days, sometimes a week and very rarely more ksksk now, the sign language thing (the name here in Brazil is LIBRAS), I just was like, yes, same! like, technily it's also a official language here, but in reality? naaah, I only learned about it in a class on college bc it recently became mandatory in teaching courses but like, only six months to learn a whole language? seriously? plus many other issues and I wished I had payed better attetion to it and actually continued learning, but it would be just a me thing, not something that everyone felt they needed to do, you know? AAAAAh it's just so infuriating!. p.s: your pronunciation of "Jorge Amado" was perfect and precious!

I highly recommend reading The Great Gatsby! It is my favorite book of all time and I don't think any of the adaptations have done it justice.

Just a quick note, sign language is used by many disabled people not just deaf people! Eg: autistic people often use sign language if they're non verbal soo yeah its really widely used but not many people know any sign language :(

The whole speech about how once you fight against one oppression , you should stand up to all of them hit kind of close to home. Here in Brazil we have a law that says sign language is the second official language of the country. At the same time, there is no sign language classes at the schools. Which is just... In America, we don't prioritize spoken languages other than English, and in my day, a second language was not offered until middle school/7th grade/age 12 or 13. Oooh, I'm currently reading The Souls of Black Folk, too. I'm very excited for your review, it sounds like you are really doing a close reading. I'm originally from the American South and so some of the history is familiar to me, and I'm finding it a bit easier going than you have (but then again sometimes I breeze through and miss things). I was very interested in his comments on Booker T. Washington. I was not that familiar with the difference in their ideologies and it just blows my mind at how little they were trying to achieve, in order to not put people off or be too radical. I can't wait to hear your insights! :)

I'd definitely recommend Benjamin Button for some Fitzgerald perusing before Gatsby. It's a very short read but leaves you with something to think about, and I like that it wasn't as fanciful (?) as the film adaptation. It's been a while since I've read it, but I remember being quite fond of the story in all its bizarreness. :)

I'm exactly the same with TBRs! My Goodreads Currently Reading list is as much of a lie as my new years resolutions!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that top! I enjoyed hearing about your current reads and your thoughts on each book before you read them. I read The Great Gatsby in high school and loved it so I've been interested in getting the graphic novel.

11/10 recommend reading The Great Gatsby (the book is far superior to the adaptations). And if you want to read another Fitzgerald before it, I'd recommend reading This Side of Paradise.

Your tangent about being influenced by two opposite cultures is a great topic! Colonization affects us all and still leaves many of us angry and confused. If I were to recommend a piece of literature to you then it would be Gloria Anzaldúa, Borderlands La Frontera, The New Mestiza. Anzaldúa is a Chicana writer (Mexican-American) who has compiled many of her essays and poems in this book that focuses on the idea of 'borderlands' and how many of us live in it. A border is not just separates physical line between two countries, but how it separates us culturally, socially, and our psyches. Thanks for your insight on racism and I agree that it's really dumb how it has become so narrowed that we believe it only happens in one part of the world.

Oh my God! I can´t believe you´ll be reading "El Aleph". I´m from Argentina and Borges is one of my favourite authors. I really do hope that you enjoy his work. I also recommend checking out his collection of poems! I´m sorry to say that I´m not aware of a specific translated edition, but I don´t think It´ll be hard to find one. I don´t know if you´ve read other Argentinian pieces of literature, but, if you haven´t, I highly recommend Julio Cortazar´s short stories. My favourites are compiled in the book "Bestiary".He has also written a very famous novel "Hopscotch", that is simply incredible. And, to shine a light on female authors, there´s Alfonsina Storni´s poems, the sisters Silvina and Victoria Ocampo, and many more. I´m so excited! I really do hope you enjoy the book and be tempted to dive into Argentinian literature. Sending all my love.

Related to Fitzgerald recommendations, I would advise you to try The Beautiful and the Damned. In my opinion, after having read almost all of his works, it is his greatest achievement. I have seen, however, really polarized impressions regarding Fitzgerald in general and about specific works too, so I do not want to overstate anything, except than invite you to give him a chance. His short stories are also a good way to get to know him - I would either recommend A Diamond as Big as the Ritz and Other Stories or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Other Six Stories, both collected by Penguin. I would absolutely love to hear your take on Fitzgerald after you manage to read something. And the Great Gatsby is definitely a must - I have read it for 3 or 4 times and I always feel like I find new dimensions of the book every time I come back to it.

I have the same attitude towards books and movies. If I've seen the movie, I'm not likely to read the book. In the case of the Great Gatsby, I saw the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio when it came out and had to read the book for school. I liked it, but I think I might have appreciated it more if I hadn't seen the movie first. The only other work I've read by Fitzgerald is "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (a short story about a man who ages backwards!). I would recommend checking that out if you want to get a better idea of his writing. It's interesting and bizarre! Also I really enjoy hearing your perspective on books and other stuff. You're such a positive presence and you've inspired me to dive deeper into reading. Thank you! (Not to mention you're pretty much a fashion icon 😊)

When We Cease to Understand the World sounds really fun. I took a lot of physics in college, so it seems like the kind of book I'd love. This is kinda a tangent, but the early quantum physicists really interest me, generally speaking, because I see their names plastered all over everything all the time haha, and they are a...strange bunch. Schrödinger apparently did like, a popular lecture series on biology & life from the perspective of a physicist -- how something so ordered can exist when the universe physically tends towards disorder -- and his early ideas about something like DNA existing, which is also on my TBR of stuff I want to track down and read. Anyway, thanks again for the recs -- they are so consistently thoughtful and diverse! 💖

I absolutely love Stephen Graham Jones. I'm really looking forward to this one though I understand there are one or two pretty horrific parts that I may have to skip! Thanks for the other suggestions and I love the outfit! Almost forgot. Years ago I read the biography Virginia Woolf by her nephew Quentin Bell. A lot of the book concerns the Bloomsbury Group. It is a fascinating and in depth biography. Not sure how easy it is to find these days, but well worth the read if you get the chance.
