Lol yeah, no matter the subject, a teacher can never repeat the basics enough. New artists especially seem to avoid the basics at all costs too. Legit, iv done over 1000 .aube 2000 critiques in the past 6 months and almost everyone skipped the basics

Great book. Been waiting for something like this since I've started. Always wanted to learn from the ground up fundamentals like you've been preaching for ages but never found a good source for all the basics. I've been studying the book seriously ever since it dropped and I appreciate these vids to go along with them as a recap to see if I've missed anything. I also like that you're adding extra notes like the leaning of letters here. I didn't see that in the negative space chapter but maybe you can include it in a future edition. Some parts of the book can also be written more clearly. I've struggled to understand a lot of the more detailed paragraphs but I appreciate all the intricacies of the art. Overall a great purchase

Thanks a million Gohan, Im glad you enjoyed the book! Check out the style chapter and the weight chapter, these tips come from those chapters. Due to how fundamentals interact, theirs plenty of overlap between them so it was necessary to split those topics into separate chapters.

I was able to find and apply corrections from the book as soon as I started studying like this which is mindblowing. It takes a lot of dedication but it's worth it for me especially because I'm a graphic designer and this is all adding to my typography knowledge 👍👍 I'll be sure to tag you when I make a hanstyle logo!

Tbh this negative space "rule" should be used in moderation and broken a lot.. That talk about gravity is nonsense. Look at logos. Fx the Nike swoosh is nothing but negative space, but it still works. Your eyes need spaces to "breathe".

Yes we even say this in the video. We also mention space is good, it's context based, you need space, and the goal ISNT to eliminate all, or even a lot of it. We also mention how the only reason we have close positioning is because we're making wordsn and letters have to be within a certain space of one another (close) to make a word. Second reason is to increase flow (meaning if you're getting flow another way you can have huge amounts of negative space. Next, the Nike swish isn't a word, but notice how the fattest part is the lower, anchoring the swish down. Go on and put that at the top and tell me the top of the swoosh isn't heavier, it is and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think you misunderstood the video and took the "rule" to be eliminate space when that isn't the rule at all.

@@Theartistblock well dang I thought the swoosh was a word 🤣🤦 Lol nah, but with logos space is often used in other creative ways. And graffiti has a lot more in common with graphics design than it has with calligraphy. The swoosh is a great example, cos it isn't balanced at all, but it still works.

@@KidCracken balance doesn't mean symmetrical, you can have heavy on one side and lighter on the other and still have ballance ( like the swoosh) . And any fundamental can be messed with for effects but it needs to be planned around like the swoosh. Keep in mind this a basics tutorial. We aren't going to be teaching about how to exaggerate a fundamental for stylistic reasons. The tutorial still stands as do the points
