"We're all trying to get better in the end." Man you've rocked my world with your videos, made me find passion where it was lacking, and have been a complete inspirational force driving some of the things I've been doing professionally, personally, and creatively. Thank you so much for your videos. You have a lifelong fan here.

You probably have enough stuff sent in to curate an Ameture art gallery or art library. A place other amateurs could visit. You were talking about Martin Ziv's images, I think you were pointing out how they set a scene, and it reminded me of the scenes on the plains from Dances With Wolves, where Costner's character is always placed at the right of the screen while traveling west, it makes him look alone, makes the plains seem vast, and occasionally letting the character traverse the frame without moving the camera to get a sense of time and scale. It helps me understand how you're pointing out Ziv's images could go a little further to setup a scene with a ...um ... Protagonist/Antagonist? Thanks, I hadn't thought of photography in this way yet.

Love to see how your channel Ted Forbes has impacted so many Photographers wether they are seasoned or just starting out! Don't want to complicate your life Ted but how about asking from now on whom ever wants to have their worked critiqued must provide a line of communiacation so in the future you may be able to do a ZOOM critique with the person as you make the video for us to enjoy and learn from . Again Ted thank you for loving Photography and for making inspiring content on your wonderful channel!

From the start I thought you were somebody special in the world of photography! Until I saw you in a video of DP review, and then I knew! You talk so much about people who are in the middle of photography and give them great advice. And you talk about starter and give them good advice. I don't belong to any of these groups, I've loved photography all my life, when I was 9 years old I got my first Kodak cassette camera and was always happy when the photos were developed! I've had quite a few cameras, maybe even made some nice pictures. Now that I'm approaching retirement I thought I'd buy the Fuji X100V. But unfortunately times have changed. With retirement and the prices of energy, buying a camera is no longer an option! I would have thought my retirement differently, maybe my whole life, but life goes fast when you look back on it! Keep posting your beautiful videos and I will enjoy everything you tell and show!

I think it's beautiful that you found a creative perspective for your critique of different photographers. I hope you won't let critique be your main focus. I love your opinions, lectures and lessons on art and photography. You have a wealth of knowledge and creative perspective that should not over shadowed by critique.

I saw the title and thought, “Nah. I’m 78 and this won’t hold any interest for me.” Then I remembered how much I get out of each of your videos. I’m COVID-isolated and like the photographer whose work you showed, took up flower photography. It was good to see the work of someone who in some ways is on a path similar to mine. Your work is universal.

I’m ret. I’ve been involved in photography since the 60s. I started doing weddings. On my second. Recently I was picked up as staff photographer for a large non profit. I was asked to shoot the damage to their facility on Sanibel island. I’m still in the stay and spray part. Hard work but I’m building a portfolio.

One thing I think we do not think about enough is what exactly we mean by "better" in phrases like "we're all in this to get better". What does it mean "to get better"? It might be understood (and is understood by some) as the narrowing of the gap between the the objective aesthetic merits of our work and the objective aesthetic ideal. If so, then the role of the critic is to impart their grasp of the objective aesthetic ideal to the artist by identifying where the art falls short of that ideal. I don't buy that. Art is subjective. And if art is subjective, then opinion (even thoughtful and considered opinion) delivered in a critique merely relates how the work impacts the critic using the critic's norms of interpretation. In which case, "getting better" comes down to improving our ability to produce art in such a way that it more successfully communicates our artistic intent. Art is a communicative act. Like all communicative acts its success hinges on the degree to which the speaker succeeds in communicating to the audience their intent. That success depends on the interpreter and their norms of interpretation as much as the artist and requires the artist and interpreter to share norms. The chief problem is that the norms are not universal and we mostly speak idiosyncratic artistic "dialects" rather than a common language.

Random comment but it would be cool if you or some fans made a discord server or facebook group, it would be awesome to see other people's work and get inspiration. And for those of us who don't have the means or aren't comfortable sending in their work to you, it would be a great way to get feedback from other talented photographers. And just in order to meet other people who share a love for the art of photography and potentially network with others in the same areas.
