One thing not covered here is not so much the DOT regulation regarding PC but the strikingly increased usage of PC in the last 5 years. Im talking strictly the legal use of PC. These mandates are almost the tail waging the dog on regulatory enforcement of ELD's, less available parking, various policy issues with different company's, all with the integration of WIFI to various shipper/consignee conditions. Company's are actually "pre-planning" PC conditions on load assignments. Not to advance a load "but its there if you need it" type thing. Its happening with almost daily repetitiveness. Next year's use of PC by the trucking industry overall will be greater than 2022. This is on every legal usage of PC imaginable and where it is not illegally used to advance a load it has slowly become a management tool to incorporate more planning. Where this is legal it is beginning to smell, as an industry, for driver stress overload and starting 10hr. Breaks to when the driver comes off that break. I already see where the strict policy that allows it is the very one that is pushing drivers to the brink on preplans for shipments. But we do not advance loads on PC do we? Theoretically, not on paper But Every available hour for shipping and receiving is being purposely planned for tolerance levels on a massive scale. Maybe Im wrong

One day, I was near Donor Pass in California, when a blizzard started. I-80 was closed down until it could be plowed. Police officers had all truckers temporarily park on the side of the freeway where you chain tires. I had to sit there for hours. My clock had almost run out, so I put myself in the Sleeper Berth mode and laid down (it was after dark, after all). Hours later, a police officer came and told me, and all the other truckers to move to the nearest Safe Haven. I told him I was out of HOS, and if he let me sit there for a few more hours, I would have a full clock. I begged him to let me stay. He said, I would be ticketed if I stayed. He said, I could use PC But, my company doesn't have PC. But, he insisted I move. All the rest areas were closed. The next truck stop was thirty minutes away. I got there and it was full. I drove thirty minutes to the next truck stop, but it was full. Then I drove another thirty minutes to the next truck stop; but, it was full. Then, two police officers had me and other trucker move to the side of the freeway, in another tire chaining area, because they closed the freeway again until that section could be plowed. I put myself in Sleeper Berth status again and napped for several hours. But, my 14-hour clock didn't stop, of course. Eventually, we were allowed to move. There was a fender-bender accident with two big rigs at that closest truck stop at that point, so the police wouldn't let anyone pull in there (it was a tiny Mom and Pop truck stop). I drove to the next one, about thirty minutes away. I parked and took a 10-hour break. The next day, I got a lecture from my manager, and written up and given a three-day suspension for egregious HOS violation..ugh.

Taken off my driving record... I was shocked the officer was doing it out of spite. I even showed him rule for suspending HOS and how ai was carrying paper....he didnt give a darn!! As a former PO certified in accident investigation and reconstruction and current driver, I learned long ago the difference between letter of the law, spirit of the law and discretion. I can honestly say that on more than one occasion in my 20 year trucking career, DOT had me dead to rights. Respect, clean well maintained equipment, and honesty saved my ass. I am of the mindset that ELD's and rushing to make it to locations before being in violation has attributed to countless accidents. Stay smart and safe out there...
@maxenra

Absolutely. Can't tell you how many times I've been held up since ELD came into effect. When something causes a set-back, you're compelled to push your limits to make your loads on time. Many times I've had several days in a row where my schedule was exactly the limit fmcsa allows. Exactly a 10 hr break, 8 hrs non-stop drive, 30 min break, 3 hrs non-stop drive, then repeat. Really takes a toll on your body.

You're correct they do deserve so much more! In the San Francisco Bay area there are teamsters jobs available that pay over $100,000 a year with full union benefits. You're home every night. Premier equipment Peterbilt day cabs. Hauling to landfills and such. Good jobs are out there I guess you just have to look for them. I spent my career working on them. I remember hearing the term why do you like trucking? The answer was freedom on the road. Sure doesn't seem like it. Super regulated, Smokey's always on your ass. You can get in trouble if you buy fuel or don't buy fuel in certain states I guess. Getting no respect! Got nowhere to park and sleep. Sort of looks like a camping trip disaster! Looks like autonomous trucks may be a blessing in disguise.

@@thisismagacountry1318 my husband worked for mud oil and gas safety. Tri-State area. 7 days a week 24 hours a day that man's phone rang constantly. This was actually the first job that he had, whereas he was home but still traveling from home constantly. Back when Obama was leaving office. He was asked one question. What not to invest in. He immediately said natural gas. I held on to that.. he didn't like the talk that I had with his boss. But I said to his boss if you can sell this business and get out. I would do it because they are about to trash your gas industry. Smart man he did so. My husband was mad. I said don't. It's time for change. I let him sulk for about 3 months. And said here. You have a choice here's two companies. I'm going to let you choose but I like one out of the two. He chose the one I liked. Hooray. He earns way more than he ever did. 120k a year. With no student he's at 175k. With a student 300k+ Not this year but the last he did very very well. Exceptionally well. The most beautiful thing out of this I told him this is going to change your life. I know that you are going to become a trainer. Trainers make good money. My husband is the type, by the book. And he is an excellent teacher. Very methodical. And, if he can teach me how to drive backwards and back up. Little 5 foot 2 115 lb. Little me. He can most certainly train another man.. I told him you're going to change lives. He trifected everything. I knew he would. He's been in farming his whole life. Driving farm equipment I need a ladder to get into. Haha 😂😆 His first student. Young man with a baby on the way and two children. He was a truck waiting for wide loads. It was a really nice day so my husband was cooking steaks outside. He struck up a conversation with him and he became his first student. Truly changing his life. It's so precious to see his students call him back. And to show how good they're doing the pictures they send. And the heartfelt words, they give to him. Honestly with the way that the world is going. I told my husband, they're going to drop gas but people need to eat. People need products. And this is before all of our processing plants started going kaboom. Within the past two years we've had over 100 processing plants go bye-bye. Food clothing drugs energy. I'm like push push hard until the end.. I told him I said this is one job that will push until the very end. He's done exceptionally well. I love prime. Any issue has always been taken care of. I'm going to surprise him this spring. And take a mini vacation with him. On his truck. Be his little truck bunny. Hehehe 😆💋👌💯💫💖 I think owner operator, is a good place to be. But. My husband and I sat down and thought about this and did the numbers. Let's say you get a truck. It's definitely not a brand new truck. It's not under complete warranty. Many of the issues that can go wrong. With his lease truck. Anything is fixed immediately. Some individuals proclaim you don't make money doing that. Oh yes you do especially if you are a good driver and you can train for the company. Oh absolutely. That's where the money is. Go where the money is. Push hard, stack and save. The money that you would be spending out to fix your truck. The money that you would be spending out, to get back on the road. You don't have to worry. If you're an excellent driver and you can become a trainer. That is your honey pot.. and I will say there are certain type, that should not be trainers. My husband is a very even keel type of person. It takes a lot to take him off.. his first trainer was terrible. Evil man. My husband was like I don't see army Navy or Air Force anywhere. Stop talking to me like I'm at a training camp. Speak to me like a human being. He was such a jerk.. I am so happy, I asked him I said drop that trainer. He's like I don't know I'm new here I'm like you're allowed to. Many of the things that he is doing and how he is treating you is not correct you don't treat someone like that you don't talk to someone like that. He dropped him. Got an awesome trainer. Actually stayed an extra four weeks on his truck. Much better. And then. He drove for a year and then started training for them.. Truly trucking is good money. You just have to pick a good company. You just have to work hard you're not going home every other week. If you have a love at home she's got to get used to you being gone. My husband and i's whole relationship. He was a professional photographer and traveled all over the world. Heck nine days after the birth of our child he was gone for 12 weeks. Sorry didn't mean to post. So for your loved ones. You'll see them around every 3 months. Although if you're training it might even be longer. But your paycheck, time gone is time earned. Make do and do without. Make that money honey. It's there for the taking.

DOT does not need "probable cause" to make a legal stop. You can be pulled in at any scale and told to follow the green arrow for your lane. Period. If they want to do a level one and you are told to go to the "barn" for the inspecting officer to meet you then I strongly advise you to do so. Your entire rig could be totally brand new, everything, brand new. The truck in front of you could be missing a bumper and have 3 bungie cords holding a fender. If they want to do it side on the road they can. They can check logs, the entire rig and drop wheel scales for you to roll up on.

This was a very well informed video and I hope all truckers watch this to educate themselves to make their travels easier, safer and more efficient. Thanks to all truckers for delivering our goods and sacrificing being away from their families and friends. Stay safe and happy trails from south Florida.

I saw on another channel a couple years ago that part of the tools and supplies you should have in your truck is a copy of the FMCA green book (and keep current on your copy). A lot of officers couldn't show you the regulation if their life depended on it as they do not have a copy of the FMCA handbook and just go by locker room lawyer education. As Trucking wins says; you want to get home safe and with more $$ in your pocket.

Don't forget if you go to a trailer drop lot and you pick up another trailer even though you're planning on driving on personal conveyance you still have to go on duty to show your pre trip of the new trailer you picked up which therefore starts your 14 hour clock again. It was the first time in my 47 year career that I ever had to call into dispatch for authorization to utilize the PC option. I can tell you that, though a minor pain, I could understand the reasoning for it. While some drivers may feel an imposition, remember that all of us really don’t take the necessary time to research and fully understand how we are affected. Read, research, and understand fully what is going on.

You document everything!!!! Don’t use PC to deliver or pick up a load. That’s how a lot Of people get messed up. They ran out of hours and then they go on PC and deliver or pick up a load. I have my authority so If I run out of hours after a delivery, I’ll PC to a truck stop “Heading to safe place to park for break”. Then I’ll take my 10 hour break plus the time I drove over. That entertainment rule is a great idea!

I knew that I needed to get out of the long haul trucking in 2005. I had to cheat the entire 6 years I drive over the road. That means most of the other drivers also had to cheat. American Truck Drivers need to be paid by the hour and overtime pay after 8 hours for all duties performed from the beginning of his/her shift. This means pretripping the truck.

It sucks because you can't break when you want without the company getting pissed at you and when you try to do the right thing and use the knowledge you were taught, dot wants to take your money from you. It's crazy! I wasn't even tired half the time I drove. I was more bored of driving all the time and not actually doing personal things. If you going to live and drive truck, there has to be time to wind down and to wake up. Your expected to just go and get loads and deliver them, but you can't take no time to eat shower amd just reset your self. The trucking rules are set up to fail you! Unless you do exactly what the company wants which is drive and then go straight to sleep.

That's my big problem. I have an awkward sleep schedule, I have had minor insomnia or over 20 years now, and I can never get to sleep at the end of my shift. It takes about 3-4 hours for me to fall asleep and if I dare to get a full night sleep so I'm not driving fatigued I have to start about 3-4 hours late every day. I love driving, I love the job, but it's either working with the high risk of crashing every day, or not working and I value my life more than money so fuck these companies.

It's sort of been that way for a long time. I was an OTR truck driver for over sixteen years. and I remember that a lot of things were screwed up. in regards to time management. year's ago I used to have to run three log books. and when I had to run that hard. I had to learn unique techniques to be able to stay awake. but still I would get so run down. that when I would come in of the road. I would have to sleep for two days straight. before I could go back out on the road. I did that for a while, and finally I'd have ask the company for a different haul. or have quit and go work for a different company. to get a break from the hard running. I've done it all Long haul, Intra State, local cartage, and in team operation, and solo operation. the only thing I haven't done. is terminal to terminal driving. and it always go like hell, stop sleep, wake-up, go like hell again. and now my internal clock is all screwed up. trucking isn't like a regular job where a person works from eight too five. there isn't a regular schedule. and I guess it's quite a bit different how. with the onboard computers. I've seen them and have a general idea how they work. but never really drove regular hauling with the onboard computers.
