Made it!!! It works!! The only call I’ve used that actually brings squirrels in.

This is so cool. My 13 year old son just used his lawn mowing money to buy his first .22LR. We went out yesterday and he got his first two squirrels, ever, with it. He is so pumped about it and I, as a dad, as well. I am going to show this to him so we can make some for ourselves. I've heard of rubbing the edges of quarters together, but this call will be a perfect project for us to spend some time together in the garage and have something to use in the woods that has a memory tied to it. Thanks for the video

I made one and once the hole was drilled I attached the striker to 550 para-cord, ran both ends of the para-cord through the hole and tied a knot with both ends of the para-cord where it couldn't slip through the drilled hole, then epoxied. Used 4 inch diameter PVC with a square cut out of it 1/4 of the way down and glued a cap to the end closet to the hole, when you strike the call the PVC tube make the acoustics great and have had called them back out as many as 4 times shortly after shooting. Thanks the original idea!

i just remembered one call. here in the UK we have magpies, corvids which make a sort of cackling sounds. we put about 10 airgun .22 airgun pellets in a film canister and when you shake it it replicates the sound. Squirrels will see off magpies that land near there dreys so if you have on holed up in a tree the call will make them come out to see off the intruder.

I made one from a 20 gauge shell and a nylon bolt and nut. Put the cord through the primer pocket and around the shell tied the nut to the cord. Then put the bolt in the shell with cardboard to fill the space. packed it with glue and finished up with electrical tape around and on top of the shell. Two nuts and bolts to a package, so I made two so I can have one for a buddy! Thanks, Logan.

As a kid growing up in central WV, I would use an old Mason jar lid and a 1/4 -20 bolt as a squirrel call. Worked for me. Thanks for the video, I'm gonna make one for myself now.

i just seen this video for the first time, if u cant find nylon all thread, u can cut the threads off of an old faucet. theyre usually plastic 1/2inch coarse threads.. look in plumbing, they have all kinds of threaded plastic.. good video btw, ive always hunted deer up north and now im livin in alabama and been so bored, i got a .22 air rifle just so i can hunt squirrels..

Thanks for the idea! I made my own version from an empty 12 gauge shell, a 1/4 inch wooden dowel rod, and a plastic gift card. I used a dremel tool with a thin cutting wheel to make closely spaced cuts in the dowel. Then I placed the tip of a small, long screwdriver against the primer on the inside of the used 12 gauge shell. I put the butt of the screwdriver on the work bench and tapped around the edge of the brass to push the primer out. The dowel rod fit the primer hole perfectly. It went in easily with a small hammer but was really tight so it won't come out. (The ridges on the dowel rod go on the brass end of the shotgun shell, drive it in from that end.) Hold the brass part of the 12 gauge shell with your thumb and first finger and rub a corner of the plastic card across the ridges. The open space in your hand between your last three fingers and your palm catches the vibration/sound coming out of the open end of the hull which makes it sound more like the "squirrel" has something in its mouth instead of a plain clicking in the open air. You can open and close your last three fingers and it sounds more like chewing. I found that rubbing the edge of the card down the teeth of a zipper on a coat also makes a decent sound as well.

brilliant logan :) as you said the possibilities are endless :) just keep with the basic nylon thread bar and solid striker & the rest is cosmetic. nice easy to follow video. thanks mate darren

It worked good enough for 5 squirrels yesterday. And any kind of high pitch whistle or squeak works for a distress call. 3 second calls work best. Cut the squeaker out of any old dog toy and use it. High pitches work best.

i just got done making one and it turned out pretty good.plan on making a nicer one soon but this one isn't to bad.i used a 12gauge hull with about a 6 inch metal threaded rod.i hot glued it in the shell and put an eyelet in were the primer goes.and for a striker i used thin slices of wood and also made a shotgun shell striker as well.they both sound good.another striker i found to be good was a Plano tackle-box plastic divider.this little call turned out good! thanks for the great video!
@alanbrown621010 жыл бұрын
You could use the primer hole to fasten the threaded rod. Just drill a small hole in the end of the rod and use a small eye screw with wood threads to screw into the rod and the eye is where you fasten the lanyard as well. Thank you sir for the video I'm gonna make one

I have seen that kind of nylon rod used with lower priced toilet seats. The bolts used to bolt down the seats to the toilet look identical to the threaded nylon rod I saw in this video. I suppose you could go to your local home improvement warehouse and get those nylon rod bolts sold nearby the toilet seats.

I tried to find a nylon threaded rod today at Lowes and wasn't able to. I asked around and it doesn't look like they sell them. The best I could find was a small nylon bolt. I passed on it to look around some more. I see someone else mentioned using a metal threaded bolt and dime. I might have to try that if I can't find a nylon one locally.

I thoroughly enjoyed your instructions. Ive never tried the cutting type squirrel call but I have used the type that mimic the high pitch sounds made by squirrels. The ones with the rubber bellows that you punch to force air thru the call. I found those calls worked extremely well to keep me from spooking all the squirrels away while walking thru dry and leafy woods. I guess I sounded more like a squirrel rustlin around in the leaves. I hope that some of you pay attention to what Im trying to say, I cannot tell you how many squirrels Ive gotten close enough to shoot while walking in noisy dry leaves but also I have walked up very close to deer while I tapped a squirrel call against my leg as I slowly slipped thru the woods!! I was wondering if the cutter call could be used in a similar fashion? Do you ever move slowly thru woods and use this cutter or mostly sit? Thanks again! Im gonna try to make me one!

@padraicmulligan284011 жыл бұрын
Delicious! Personally I just like to cook it like fried chicken but some people complain that it is too bony (only legal to hunt grey squirrels in my area). I do not really eat chicken myself but most people that have eaten it with me say they taste like chicken only darker.
@PathologicalProblemSolver11 жыл бұрын
nice job. for anybody wondering, the back of your knife would work well as a striker too. back of knife, not the edge of the blade. obviously thatd ruin your call

hey guys just use a coarse file on your multitool and your house key, or a penny, or a hard peice of wood. works pretty good :) jon
@nutmegger195710 жыл бұрын
This is under the premise that the squirrel "cares" about the sound. Unlike Deer or Moose during the rut, when the "call" is an attractant, I wonder if the squirrel really "cares" about the sound of eating. I get the premise though.

Sure glad I saved the nylon bolt when I replaced the toilet seat. It works fine. I used a piece of tree limb - not as much work gluing, etc..There is only one squirrel in my woods. So, I don't want to shoot him - else I wouldn't need that caller anymore. Nice Video.
@TheBackwoodsmansInstitute11 жыл бұрын
you could, it will sound a little different but play around with what you use for your "striker" i personally don't like the sound of metal on metal for the call. but i have used a just a metal bolt with a plastic washer before it hit me to use empty hulls. i have used the empty shell with a metal all-thread but it might sound just fine... you'll just have to experiment around bud.
