Can a Person escape a human-sized Glue Trap?

Join the science discord! / discord After struggling with my mega-microwave I decided to have some fun. I got 4 gallons of bulk glue for mouse traps because I was curious if a person could escape from a human-sized glue trap.
I never saw anybody try it before so I was curious. At first I thought about getting a few hundred of the regular sized glue traps from the store and stapling them to the plywood but decided the bulk glue would be more economical and cover more surface area. It was not a cool color like the stuff in the store but I don't mind.
I had fun, thanks for watching!

All the glue traps I’ve seen use strong paper as the base instead of something more solid so I imagine that it would be a lot harder to get out of it if it was flexible since it would be pulled up whenever you try and pull yourself out of the glue trap

The answer is no. He only got out because it was a very thin layer. If it was two inches deep he would be stuck fast.
@TheTonyMcD
@TheTonyMcD 5 жыл бұрын
That really isn't the biggest problem. Repeating this with just a thicker layer is probably still escapable. The main issue is that he used a rigid plywood board and wore a suit. A real glue trap uses flexible paper. When you try to pry yourself off, the paper will just bend with you. Then the suit has so much give. The fabric stretches and deforms giving him a great amount of leverage. Think of pulling tape up from the corner as opposed to an entire side. If he re-did this experiment with a tough pleather mat as the paper substitute, had about a half inch to three quarter inch deep layer of glue, and no suit, there is no chance in hell he could get out of it. Even if he kept the suit on and used a similar thin layer of glue, but just replaced the plywood with a pleather mat, that would probably be impossible to escape. I also have to wonder if heating up the glue changed it all. I doubt it, but it's something to consider. Oh, and 2 inches is way too much. He does need to use a thicker layer, but two inches is insane. The real traps aren't very thick at all. Something like a half inch to three quarters of an inch is imo the best approximation. Too thick of a layer could actually make it easier to escape.
@allanombina
@allanombina 5 жыл бұрын
You forgot the fact that he’s wearing a suit. If he was a bare skin animal he would be in pain and agony as his skin starts ripping from his flesh
@TheTonyMcD
@TheTonyMcD 5 жыл бұрын
Lol, the skin will not rip from your flesh. The glue isn't that strong. It's more of just like an extra sticky sap. It couldn't even manage to rip the fabric he was wearing. If it can't rip that, it's never going to rip skin. The key aspect of the trap is because it's on paper. The animal can not free itself because the paper will just bend when it tries to pull itself off. That's not to say it's painless though. Hair will certainly be getting ripped out and that will be quite painful. But no where near skin tearing lol. You are also going to die by a mix of exhaustion and dehydration. Not a fun way to go, it'll be long and drawn out. Maybe if you got stuck and let the glue dry out on you, it might be a bit stronger. But these glues aren't really designed to dry out that much or that fast. They have to remain sticky for many days as it is a trap that could remain there for a month or more before a mouse happens across it.
@zephyrdreamer
@zephyrdreamer 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheTonyMcD it can rip skin of the body though, I've seen mice with their skin stuck to the traps before and it's increbily gross. It's probably because of all the hairs that it just rips the very surface layer off.

This is why you shouldn't use these unless they're indoors. Bats see the bugs stuck on these and try to eat them. Then they get painfully stuck and starve. It can take several minutes for a wildlife rehabilitator to get them unstuck, and they always have raw patches of skin where the fur got stuck and ripped off. Sometimes if the bats get too scared, they may thrash and break their wings.
