Sixteen-year-old Lily Yohannes scored in her national team debut and the United States defeated South Korea 3-0 in an exhibition on Tuesday night.
Crystal Dunn and Sophia Smith also scored for the U.S., playing its second game under coach Emma Hayes.
“It’s a dream come true, really,” said Yohannes, who came in as a second-half substitute. “I mean, I played this scenario out in my head like how many times before this game? Just having the idea of coming on and scoring.”
Hayes was named coach last November but remained in Europe to finish the season with Chelsea. She replaced Vlatko Andonovski, who stepped down after the U.S. was knocked out of the Women’s World Cup last summer in the round of 16.
The U.S. also won the first friendly match over South Korea 4-0 on Saturday in Commerce City, Colorado. Mallory Swanson and Tierna Davidson each had a pair of goals.
Hayes will now turn her attention to selecting an 18-player roster for the U.S. Olympic team. The U.S. opens the Olympics on July 25 against Zambia in Nice.
Hayes made sweeping changes to the starting lineup for Tuesday’s match played in steady rain at St. Paul’s Allianz Field. Only captain Lindsey Horan and Jenna Nighswonger also started on Saturday.
Alex Morgan, who did not play in the first match against South Korea because of a minor injury, was among the starters.
Dunn, making her first start at forward since 2017, scored in the 13th minute off a cross from Nighswonger. Dunn, who has played primarily at left back in recent years, had not scored since October 2018. She has 25 career goals.
Smith scored her fourth goal of the year in the 67th minute at a tight angle off a backheel pass from Swanson.
Yohannes, who plays for Dutch club Ajax, got her goal just 10 minutes after coming into the game as a substitute, scoring from out front through traffic on a cross from Trinity Rodman in the 82nd. Yohannes became the third-youngest player to score for the national team.
After the goal, Yohannes was mobbed by her teammates in celebration and even the bench emptied to cheer for her.
“That was just really amazing support from my teammates all running up to me. That made it just so much more special and I’m just really happy,” Yohannes said. “Really excited.”

Back in her country, tival fans hate her for being frank and being a dominant serial wimner with Chelsea, calling her arrogant and disrespectful. But players of her club paint a different picture of her. And just a few days of knowing her, players of the USWNT are expressing the same views about her as her former club players.

Lily Yohannes is truely amazing. Her vision on the field and way she smoothly plays even when tackling is so deceptive. Once she becomes physically stronger..look out. Right now she probably should be a starter...but also bringing her out slowly makes sense as well. Looks like this team will be difficult to beat...esp. when the subs were put on the pitch. Ms Hayes also has that wicked British dry sense of humor that is loveable. She is exactly what the USWNT needed. On to another topic..It was so evident that Morgan's time is over. The king is dead long live the King

She did well for her debut, but let’s not get carried away. She needs time to adjust, get bigger, stronger, and develop chemistry. Tell me who she should start over? Horan? Coffey? Lavell? Give her time and she’ll be great, but that time isn’t this summer.

Not being offensive but it's amusing to read that Americans realised Emma is interesting. People who watch the WSL know her as tough, intelligent with great insights. She takes care and protects her players too. She's a good commentator as well. Now you know why Chelsea fans were crying when she decided to leave. It's the right time to get her as manager because the US was used to winning against the semi professionals. With many countries having full time players, Emma is the right coach to get them back to winning ways and spank the egos in the US team.

To say Chelsea fans were crying over the loss of Emma Hayes is a little over the top! In fact many wanted a change of coach owing to Hayes inability to dominate in Europe!! ……There are certainly no tears to be found amongst Chelsea supporters with Sonia Bompastor’s appointment as head coach! Chelsea will be the team to beat in Europe this coming season….Go Chelsea Go!!!

@@kirstieb8025 what on earth are you talking about? She is supposed to be a football coach, not a bloody social worker! If you think this bad tempered, sore loser is so great, ask yourself this question. Why did the English FA never considered her as a coach for the lionesses? You fools have fallen for the Hayes hype, hook, line and sinker…keep an eye on Chelsea this coming Season. Their new coach Sonia Bompastor will know how to utilise the tremendous players she will have at her disposal, and dominate Europe! Mia Fishel and Catarina Macario will be part of that firepower also. Hopefully they will become great players for the USWNT. Which I’m sure they will. But that success will come from Chelsea and their new top rated coach, Sonia Bompastor.

Emma is such a realist. I think she and her team can be trusted to choose the right squad. They have the skill and the insight. We as the public SEE the piercing runs and goals but not knowing the game plan and expectations, we sometimes miss what a coach is looking at especially in terms of a game plan...plus we don't see what they see during training. If Alex isn't in the 18, I think she'd be a good alternate so her presence is felt. I still have my fingers crossed for Andi Sullivan.

I think the US is starting to get that this is a new start from what they were used to, but they seem to be warming to Emma. I wonder how it will be when the team loses a game, as Emma has been at pains to try to keep feet on the ground, knowing there is a job still to do.

Shame Team can't play in Euros, realistically the ONLY Tournaments that mean anything to Emma & Team is The World Cup & The Olympics every 4 years! As a Brit, I'd love to see Emma lift World Cup with the team. Crazy to think of they don't win Olympics it will probably be seen as Failure! Yet this team isn't the best No.1 in World right, it's about 4th! 😮❤

Time will tell… So far they have beaten an average opponent at best and their play is not different than before Emma’s arrival. I don’t like the ball movement, forward momentum, energy and aggressiveness we have enjoyed as US fans thus far. I will remain the BIGGEST supporter of the team, but not ready to say they will return to world champions again. Let’s make it happen Emma.

After a one week camp?! This week was mostly about getting girls on the pitch and seeing who should be in the 18. It’s going to take time to develop her system. I saw lots of good things and lots of things that need work. As long as the girls respond to Emma we will be back on top. We have way too much talent to not be. Thinking about some of the names that will be left out is stunning. Alex Morgan, Alyssa Thompson, Lynn Williams, Krueger, Dahlkemper, etc. could be left out. Some big names will be cut for sure.
