How to replace a wheel hub in a Jeep JK/JKU. This process is very similar if not the same for most vehicles with a wheel hub. This is on a 2010 Jeep Wrangler JK. Great project that is easy to do and can get you into working on your own vehicle. If you have any questions feel free to comment below. Remember to subscribe and share this with a friend.

For getting that spindle nut off. You can try a few other methods. First of course, an air gun spins them right off. But if you dont have one, here are two ideas. 1. leave the brake hardware on, and have your friend hold the brakes instead of the prybar. ;) 2. If your wheels have center caps, remove them, and then put the wheel back on. With the vehicle still sitting on its tires, crack the spindle nut free, then lift it up and take it all apart.

I have a tad bit of play up and down on my wheel and a good amount of fluid on the inside of my rim. The shop said ball joints but they look fine to me. Could this be the issue?
@TheBeardedJeeper
@TheBeardedJeeper Жыл бұрын
You would have to check. Jack the vehicle up and put a long pry bar under the wheel push it up and down and look for play you should be able to see play in your ball joints. A bad wheel hub a lot of the time but not always will be noisy.

Hi, I couldn't get my speed sensor to budge. So I've sprayed it with DW40 and left it till next weekend. I have a suspicion that its the sensor that is damaged and not the bearing. Could this be the case? Thanks,
@TheBeardedJeeper
@TheBeardedJeeper 4 жыл бұрын
Those sensors if you still have the stock ones on they can be a pain to take out. They are cheap enough if you break one you are not going to break the bank. If it snaps off in there all you have to do is get a drill and run it in reverse with a small drill bit. you should be able to drill it out or get it small enough to where it will fall out. Just make sure you clean out all of the rubber pieces. its easy to check the hub if you spin it and hear a bunch of grinding and it doesn't move well then it should probably be replaced. The sensor will make the traction control light appear on the dash. If you buy a new wheel hub it comes with a new sensor as well. I hope that helps and if you have any more questions let me know.

How long should a stock wheel bearing last? My jku on 2.5" lift with 35s has 52k miles and I just started noticing a slight vibration. If I grab my front drivers side tire I can wiggle the wheel back and forth a little bit.. that a wheel bearing symptom?
@TheBeardedJeeper

Stock wheel bearings can last different amounts of time depending on how much mud and dirt get into it. Yes that sounds like a wheel bearing. You might be able to heat grinding as well when the wheel is moving

FYI, on JKs the unit bearings can even be run without the stub shaft in an emergency as the unit bearings are fully contained. This means that you can loosen the axle nut and torque it with the wheel touching the ground (if your wheels allow for the socket to fit). Just don't try this on a YJ or earlier or you will have a bad day.

I don't understand why my wheel bearings were so difficult, I've changed many bearings before but on my jk the bearing would not separate from the axle until I went to a shop and they used 20 tons of pressure to separate them. The new bearings will not go onto the axle and now I have to get 2 new axles. A $200 job turned into $1000 .

@@TheBeardedJeeper I just completed the repair and it turns out to be the amount of rust there was between the axle and bearing was a big factor in the replacement of many parts. Since I had to have a shop separate the axle from bearings the spindle was warped in the process and not letting the new bearings slide in place. Now that I have new axles and bearings everything came together easily. I would say the issue here would be neglected care from previous owner and myself although I've only had the JK for 2 years. Since I was already in the area brakes, rotors and shocks were also replaced.
