Scott and Mark talking about the interview "starting" when you arrive in the parking lot is 100% on the nose. When I was in college (in the before times), a company flew me to Kansas City for an interview. The fellow who picked me up at the airport was a kind gentleman and we chatted on the way back to headquarters. Friendly discussions of life and what I knew about the association, etc. Guess who he was? He was NOT the HR person who set up the interview with multiple people for the day but THE editor who would be my boss if hired. Yes, I got the job and they were waiting on me to graduate two weeks later.

An older Gentleman I know, went to a Job Interview with a very young persons company. He was interviewed by five people who were 20-30 years his junior and he felt that he had done very well in the interview until the last question when a young lady asked.... "You're obviously very suitable and qualified for this job but we are a Company of Young People and we like to have fun. Can you please show us your sense of humour by telling us a joke that you like?" The older Gentleman stood up and walked to the door, he opened the door, stuck his head out and addressing the other young candidates for the job, waiting outside, he said " I'm sorry but they have decided to employ me and my first job is to thank you all for coming but you can all leave now!" He turned around, walked back to his seat and sat down 😳😳😳

@@NicolaMaxwell it’s definitely a learned skill, and you can do it ! If you are interest the Dale Carnegie sales course teaches this skill and will help you become a master communicator! I can effectively ask 100 questions, and “actively “ listen to the 100 answers and the other person will happily answer them all ! Remember the majority of people love themselves and are happy to have someone make them feel interested in them ! Which an expert level communicator is truly interested in learning about the person, the company, the questions asked…etc …. Try it tomorrow with a friend, your partner or coworker…. Make a positive statement about them and then immediately follow it up with a question….and actively listen and then follow up with another question and then actively listen……etc …..if starts to get awkward you can make some statements to smooth things out so it doesn’t feel like an interrogation and then immediately return back to some questions….with practice you’ll learn the skill …. He/she who asks the questions rules the conversation and gathers all of the information ℹ️ Start with 3 or four questions and finish it off with thanks for sharing your thoughts with me , I always enjoy listening ,so I can learn and grow, have a positive day …. Best wishes on your journey 🙏🏻

When my daughter was in 7th and 8th grade, her school participated in a program called The Amazing Shake. You can look it up to learn more. I think it's based in Georgia or one of those southern states. But basically it teaches business and social etiquette...including how to do a proper handshake. One of the rounds of the competition was called the Gauntlet and involved going into a sequence of rooms (2 minutes in each room) one right after the other. They brought in business professionals to be judges and high school drama students to play the various roles required for each scenario. The scenarios included things like attending a mock job interview, giving a wedding toast, giving a pep talk to a sports team, handling a disgruntled customer, accepting an awkward birthday gift, responding to a tutor who farted while helping you with your assignment😂, and many more. For the next round, students were put into small groups and given a local professional to serve as coach. They were given an objective (a community project such as building a revolutionary new school or opening a sustainable homeless shelter) and then had to present their research and plan during a boardroom style meeting. This competion was spread out over many weeks and students got eliminated after each round until they were down to three students who then did a presidential-style debate in front of all the students. My daughter won 2nd place out of about 200 students. I really wish all middle/high schools taught their students these skills. My 20-year-old son still doesn't really have a grasp on them. And he's still unemployed, living at home.🙄 (Has a bit of neurodivergence and social anxiety, to be fair.)

These were great tips! I love the various topics you bring to us. One thing I would like to see is examples of your points, like when Greg mentions certain questions are traps, give some examples, and then what a couple answers might sound like. And on the Other side of the table, one thing that put me off when I was interviewing candidates is their over-eagerness. The quick "yeah yeahyeah" or over-nodding as I'm talking lets me know they're not even Listening to me, they just want to be agreeable. It also makes me feel rushed in my own interview.

At the end if he is asked if he has any questions never say no, even if it's one he already knows the answer to. Also after the interview within 24 hours send an email thanking them for their time and hope to hear from them soon. I'm a qualified recruitment consultant. I trained this stuff for years. I've literally got 100% hire offers for clients I trained. ❤ All the best to your husband and tell him to remember he is as much interviewing them as they are him. That's where I don't have 100% my clients have felt the job or company isn't for them 88% of the time if I remember correctly. ❤🙏

I've always wonder how accurate this tips is. But I've heard that if you dress for your interview like what the company asks you to wear it helps with your impression. Like you are already a member of the team.

@Deeb999 One more point for women: don't go on an interview during the second half of your monthly cycle! You shouldn't start a new job in that period either. Start a job when you're feeling good about yourself. It will make adjusting so much easier.

When I was in college, they were hiring a new Percussion Professor. As part of the interview process, each of the three candidates gave live lessons to some of our fellow students, in front of faculty AND students. It was in the Recital Hall, on stage with lights, so pretty high pressure. When the second candidate was "teaching" one of my peers, he mirrored so much of his body language. My peer was particularly awkward and "had his own pace." He was taking a long time, nervous, just fumbling his mallets out of his stick bag. The professor silently slowed way down and also fumbled getting his mallets out, even pretending to take out the wrong ones and awkwardly looking around, just like my buddy was doing. He had already done a session with a previous student, and completely changed his pace and demeanor for my buddy. I dont think a lot of people caught it, he was so smooth, but not overt. And he "let my buddy win" during the lesson. He was like Mr Rogers, and a Great Master at the same time. (I would say he didn't GET the job, but I think it would be more accurate to say, he didn't TAKE the job.) We did get a very good professor though : )

Wow! You guys made me feel fabulous! This is exactly how I have always acted when applying for a job. Yes, I have never been turned down for a job. I have studied the companies that I applied for and what their goals were, what the position required, whether I could live with the salary, and what the feeling of the environment would be. I feel it is also very important to ask questions. It is expensive to train someone to the position offered and everyone must be on the same page of the end goal and also be compatible in the organization. I was hired for one job and quit after the interview with the comptroller of the company. He went beyond the job description. That was many years ago. I did not embarrass the company, but just said it was not a fit. In the end I found the career I stayed with for over thirty years.

100% ask good questions. I usually ask about what kind of yearly goals they had last fiscal year and how they achieved them as a team or individually; and/or I ask about their current goals. I like to ask about their communication style with the team; what they think are their strongest and weakest communication styles and how they work on addressing them. I always ask about how they address times when stress is high and how they work through that. I've had an interview in the past where the team on the 2nd interview thought I was out of line for asking questions...One of the ladies was upset that I asked about their goals and told me she wasn't being interviewed and didn't answer my question. (others on the team did answer the question) I ended up asking the manager to remove me from being considered for the job. She asked me why, and I told her I didn't think the job was right for me and that I didn't connect with the team.

Chase, I tell myself that all the time, when I’m nervous I tell myself I have happy excitement & it starts working not every time yet, I’ve also told my friends to get through nervousness and make it positive to try to tell themselves that they are excited about things and those things can turn to positive things now, I know that’s not always possible but it’s a good thing to try. I’ve always heard that first meetings are always important. That’s something I have always tried to do, and I have noticed that people are more capable of having more of a good influence as a person gets older, I told my doctor that it felt strange calling her ma’am because she is obviously younger (not really) and she told me to call her Dina so that worked out well

I have probably the worst interview advice but it happens to have worked for me every time.... I go in not caring if I get the job or not. At one point I happened to be looking for a job but I wasn't desperate for it so I didn't care either way and I think as a result I came across as being more calm and natural. My mind didn't go blank or if it did I just brushed it off and admitted "sorry I lost my train of thought" and interviewers seemed to respond well to me. Obviously not everyone is in a position where they can be choosy and they might desperately need the job but if even for that short time you can trick your mind into thinking you don't it might work. Plus the receptionist is the first point of contact - I've been on both sides of the counter and how you treat employees that might be "lower status" than you will be noticed. In fact I always chat them up to get a feel for the company (ie "how long have you been with x" - they know all.
