I think these episodes are perfect to encourage everyone to just start the pruning process. No bother about wire or styling - just get the sapling headed in the right direction. It can be so easy to get daunted by the desire to produce a 'finished' bonsai that we never make a start in the first place. I am curious whether you have had any issues pruning these in the middle of winter? There is a lot of discussion around 'best' times and I just wondered if you have any views based on your 'actual' experiences :)

Totally agree with Xavier and love your videos, which are teaching me so much. I have the same question on winter pruning. I'm guessing all the winter pruned trees are then kept in the greenhouse? It's hard to judge timing in the sort of weather we are having in Tennessee US this week. After 8" of snow and a week of lows near 0F, we went from 15F this morning to a forecast of 63F in 3 days. I'm moving every tree that can be carried in ad now out of my unheated garage. 😮

Thanks for sharing what to do with sticks in pots. That's a common beginners' question and a main basic for bonsai!

You go incubating and then sparking ideas on the tree as only a very creative person can do. You're a giant, Nigel. 🤸🤸

Amazing class for beginners, this is probably one of your best videos mate, this is the real bonsai essence. Starting with little trees and create your style with time and patience. Not like some KZfaqrs wanna people to buy expensive trees, wire every single branch and kill them in a few months. Thanks for your explanations you are the goat of bonsai Sir.

Love your "sticks in pots" videos. Got a lot them myselves, mostly selfseeded trees I have dug up from my garden.

I love the trees we both have that just started growing around the house. Some of them, with proper care and pruning could be spectacular someday. At first it bothered me when people said to get a more mature tree to work on, but then I became comfortable telling them how much I enjoy the process of developing the branch structure from scratch. Rock on Nigel, because you really do rock!

Great start for these trees! I find it still very difficult to figure out what to do now to get what I want in 10 years. That's just lack of experience. In 10 years I'll know how to do it!😄

I think the tree which is unknown is an apple tree maybe? The colour of the bark and the buds look like one

Add my thanks to those below. I know that there is debate (how unusual...) about this mid-winter pruning. I would submit that it won't hurt the trees. They are dormant. Keep in mind that a commercial orchardist starts pruning in mid to late winter because there are so many trees that have to be pruned for the growing season. If left until buds started swelling, the orchard would be in bloom long before the pruning could be completed. Ask yourself, what do they know? that I don't. I think that Nigel is correct on so many fronts. The history of his trees is proof enough for me!

When trying to decide on the best front of the tree. you don't seem to place as much on the root flare as others do.

WOW! You are definitely not afraid to prune HARD! Will pruning hard this time of year mean that the new growth will be longer with the spring push? In answering that, please contrast pruning in winter vs. pruning after the first spring push. Just curious.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 ай бұрын
Pruning early winter tends to stimulate the tree into generating back buds before the push of growth in spring. Pruning after the first flush will keep your tree growing and extending, but backbuds are less likely. It depends on what you want, growth or backbuds to trim back to.
