Our club is going on our spring collection trip to find suitable trees for creating bonsai. We are collecting these yamadori trees with permission on this private land.
Next, it's time to work on the trees at the Tropical Expression's Chinese Elm Workshop held at their store in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

I'm looking forward to the future work on your Chinese Elm, Nigel. I have one that's been a challenge since day one. Got rid of the aphid problem, overwintered it, and it's in full recovery mode now. For now, it's going to stay in the pot, and I'll let it grow wild for the summer. It may get a light pruning before coming inside for the winter, but honestly, it's has such a wild series of bend that I'm not sure if air layering might be the best option down the road. Thanks for another great video, Nigel.

Those blue and white flowers at 8:00 are Aquilegia vulgaris, common columbines or Granny’s nightcaps. They are commonly grown as perennials in gardens. I have them too, of course, but over here (northern Europe) they are not flowering yet.

Should have put the root over rock to one side of the pot and have the apex central. In my opinion😉

Something to consider in a future re-potting for sure! Right now we’re just concerned with getting the roots healthy and developing some vigor.

Hi Nigel, Thanks for the videos. It's always good to learn from you. I couldn't find a video that would specifically talk about what to look for when choosing a greenhouse. I live in Canada as well, so I know that for severe winters we would need some protected or sealed greenhouse to handle our tropical trees in winter and at the same time that is well ventilated to deal with our extremely hot summers. If you do have a video (I've seen that you have a lot talking about the construction of your glass walls greenhouse), can you please point it out? Thank you!
@TheBonsaiZone

Hello Jonas, you can't go wrong with a Rodgers glass greenhouse if it's within your budget. The ones with the rigid plastic walls are good too, but you can have problems with panels blowing out in high winds. www.rogersgreenhouse.com/

Hey Nigel! I have a question for you (or anyone else who reads this). I noticed a Silver Maple growing at the very edge of my backyard, and it’s about half a meter tall already. Do you think it would be easy to dig it up and pot it, and do you think it’s at a good age to start styling? I’ve never dealt with real young trees before. Thanks!

He calls it a tender tree. After saying it was native to Korea. I spent a year in Korea in the 1980's the climate there in the winter is similar to what you would find in Minesota. I don't think the plant could handle anthing cooler that about -35c.

Great class and bonsais. What luck for Norm and Naomi, root over rock on their first time out!!! It must have been in the stars. You and Peter Chan, of Heron’s Bonsai (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5lniKiUv5OXfYE.html) , in the UK, both talked about “hard and soft pruning”. He’s in step with you, labeling the current year’s growth as “soft” b/c it’s pliable, easily bent without tearing or ripping, and returns pretty much to its original shape and form and, as you said, branches and leaves from the previous year(s) are “hard”. Now I get it when you say a “hard prune.” Duh… He said it is pretty easy to make maple seedlings from the soft stems by stripping off some lower leaves and putting the stem in water to root, then planting. Anyone tried that and had success?
