We reveal the completed Birch Bonsai forest after pruning the trees and applying moss!
The trees used in this forest are Betula pendula, commonly known as silver birch, European white birch, or East Asian white birch.
The silver birch is Finland's national tree!

The birch forest looks really good. Thankyou to Nigel and Jonathon for the video. Maybe Nigel, you can do another video at Jonathons house on how to put your bonsai in the ground for winter. I think there is alot of bonsai people in cold winter climates that would enjoy that. Thanks

Personally, I like that not all of his videos are taken with the same background. It would be kinda boring and this way we can get a glimpse of the Bonsai Zone in each video as well. But opening up the aperture is also a better way to isolate subject than just using plaing background.

The horticultural qualities of different types of sand have always been mysterious to me. I guess I need to do more research. I found a nursery that sells ‘horticultural ‘ sand and bought a bag for use in potting medium, though I don’t understand what makes it preferable. I know that in construction different grades of sand are used for various applications. Some day I’ll figure it out. It’s also seems odd that when you apply sand to the top of your perlite / Turface Bonsai soil , it doesn’t gradually penetrate in and sink to the bottom. Usually when one mixes small and large particles of rocks / minerals, the smaller, finer pieces sink to the bottom.

Air layering birch is a little risky. Also sometimes the inconvenience of an air layer isn’t worth the aggro if the material to be pruned off lacks interest - it will slow down the progress of the tree in the composition. 👍

Hi Nigel. My impression while you were showing where to trim the trees is with the background of the large tree in the garden it was very hard to see the birch trees at all. I was wondering if you've ever tried aspen? I have but they haven't made it. Not sure why, maybe because they are created by runners from the mother tree. Idk?
