For the people wondering. We do use 2 x GH5 for the live streams :P

I use it for walking live streams too. Stream is 720p because of mobile internet stability issues, but same time I can record 4K60p and upload it later.

I just dont see any issue in uploading 4K60p. Anyone can select quality they want. Fortunately GH5 can downscale HDMI from 4K to 1080i for my mobile encoder.

Great job guys - you guys deliver real information compellingly well. As a long time GH 2,3, 4 and now 4 months 5 user: The only downsides from my gh4 and 5s is certain clients being put off by the compact size of the camera (it doesn't happen often) - sometimes CEOS or agencies ( and their team of minions) NEED to see a C300, fs 7 or anything bigger to make them feel important. I just throw a cheap mattebox and cage on mine with some audio modules hanging off it, ditch the pancakes for the larger zooms and clients generally wont feel disrespected. But when I am gathering content / cutaways for myself the small form factor is totally liberating. I have the panny 12-35, 35-100 but am coming around to the look of the Olympus glass and focus action (the Oly 7-14 is a real estate gem) - might have to look at that Olympus 12-100!

We took a GH5 to europe with us and a PXW-x70 (bought both from you guys), I'm almost certain that we busted out the x70 one time. The biggest reason was, if we didn't know what the situation was going to be like at the venue we were going, the stabilization inside the camera allows us to know that we will have useable and stable footage. People moan about the autofocus, here and there it was troublesome, but with literally every camera, the autofocus is not perfect, I would never have noticed autofocus issues if other people weren't complaining about it; you just have to know how to use the autofocus modes.

Great review guys. I fall into the likely very small group of people who is thrilled to have tethering and use this camera for studio photography. Like you said, it is great that Panasonic adds features in, just because they can, even when it seems like a small minority requires or will use them. I used to always just use the WiFi on my GH4 to remote transfer files to my desktop as I was doing studio shots but it was super slow transferring so it is nice to have the USB-C connection now. Of course, I also do video work with it which is why I haven't moved to a different system, but its how well rounded this camera is that makes it appealing to me. If I had to pick two categories where I find it to be lacking they would be wedding and wildlife photography only because of the poor low light performance. Everything else I use it for has been fantastic.

Was waiting for this review, very informative as always! I have had a GH5 since it came out in April and got V-Log L for it as well. I used to have a GH4 (with a Atomos Ninja 2 for 1080p 10-bit 4:2:2 and V-Log L) I so knew what I might expect from using it. I also knew from the contrast detect focus for video, how to focus manually and never to rely on AF. From my experience from using a GH5: 1. Less shadow noise over the GH4. This is great and lets me have more options in pushing shadows in editing, especially using V-Log L. I have noticed some magenta blocks in shadows when shooting V-Log L which can take time to remove in editing (maybe macro blocking?) 2. No reddish color cast. I noticed the GH4 had a reddish color cast to the images/video which the GH5 no longer has. I also noticed skin tones slooked a little orange on the GH4 too. With the GH5, there are better skin tones, but I still prefer RAW photos or V-Log L for best skin tones, which do look quite good. 3. Colors are defiantly improved and better than on the GH4. I still am no overly keen on the colors other than in V-Log L or RAW as they tend to have a slight cool cast which I am no over keen on. 4. More detail and sharper. I have defiantly noticed an increase in sharpness and detail over the GH4. 5. Auto focus is a bit better in video, but not useful. I was prepared for this as I knew how contrast only focus works, especially coming from a GH4 and manually focus 90% of the time, so I am not the kind of person who was expecting anything great with it or need it, except when I am taking in front of the camera. 6. I like the addition of a waveform monitor, but I find it takes up too much of the screen so haven't used it. Probably limitations of a waveform monitor on a small screen. 7. IBIS is great to have. When I was using a GH4, I stuck to IS only lenses for video and photos to avoid shake, but now I have 4 lenses and only one has IS, and have started using Olympus lenses such as the 12-40 f/2.8 Pro and 60mm Macro which don't have IS, to replace my Panasonic lenses I have which did (12-35 MK I and 30mm Macro) even used a Metabones T Smart Adaptor with an old Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro lens I have (original without IS) and had no real issues with shake. I have found on wide angle lenses when shooting video while walking, there is a slight wobble at the edges of the image with the IBIS, but far better than not having it. I was able to take a handheld wide angle photo in a forest in low light for 1/6 second with the Olympus 12-40 at f/4 and it was sharp. Couldn't do that without the IBIS. 8. I love the addition of focus transitions. I always wanted to do focus pulls with my GH4, but couldn't due to fly by wire lenses having no hard stops or focus distance indicators on the lenses, but now this makes it much easier. I do wish you could see your exposure while in this mode as when I am shooting V-Log L, I always like to make sure I am 1 stop overexposed and can't always tell if the lighting suddenly changes (I rarely shoot in controlled lighting and shoot outdoors). I have used this feature a few times already and will again. 9. 10-bit internally. I really like that it can do internal 10-bit, especially at 4K. I have recently tried the 400Mbps ALL-I with a ADATA Premier One V90 256GB SD and really I didn't find any improvement in image quality over the 150Mbps, I did notice the motion may be slightly better. I noticed than when editing, in the timeline I go to any point of the ALL-I video and if it was in focus and sharp, there wasn't any blur, except for objects moving faster than the camera shutter speed, but with the 150Mbps, there was slightly more blur. Other than that, I saw no other improvements over 150Mbps. 10. I have shot more photos with this than I have with my GH4 and quite like the results you can get in RAW and take lots of macro photos with it and recently have been looking around for fungi and getting lots of shots, many in low light with slow shutter speeds and low ISO to keep noise down, and getting very good, sharp results. The photo AF is really good and quite fast, especially with Panasonic lenses that have fast AF. I have used 6K photo and I could see that it could be useful, if the AF was better as that could be useful for sports or fast moving wildlife so you can pull that one interesting image from the rest. I do wish they had kept the built in flash as although I didn't use it much on the GH4, there were times having it was quite useful, but I have learned to work without it. I have also shot time lapses with it and on a fully charged battery, 20MP, shooting 1 second bursts, I shot a sunrise time lapse that way and I was getting 7877 images before the battery died. Overall I wish Panasonic had have put in phase detect focusing with fast accurate video focus, and had at least 1 stop better low light/ 1 stop better dynamic range, and I hope that comes to the next GH camera, but overall I really like it.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this video. From a still photographers perspective it actually sounds like an equally if not better cam then the E-M1.2. C-AF is something that has got me worried for shooting sports and birds but might be worth a try anyway. GH5 all in all seems to have the best ergonomics in the business and the best use of touchscreen features. Thanks again!

Awesome still. 6 years later. What I love about this camera the most is that it seems to stand the test of time. The gh5 never feels like an old camera. I use one as a backup for my s5, and it just doesn't seem like I'm keeping something around just because I don't want to let it go. Honestly, I just bought it recently, for $467, and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. Fun to watch this review, to see that Panasonic created something amazing almost a decade ago. Well, just over a half a decade. :-)

2 years later, and with the GH6 not far away, the GH5 is still the standard other manufacturers are trying to beat, and with varying degrees of success. The A7S III is arguably the only camera that has finally exceeded the GH5 video quality/frame rates/usefulness and versatility, but still lags in important features like anamorphic support, shutter angle, stop motion etc etc. It is also evidence of who is leader of the pack in the way the A7S III copied the menu structure and methodology from the GH5. And now, 2 years later, I am looking at purchasing a GH5 despite the impending drop of its replacement. I figure that I may decide to get the GH6 in the long run, but the GH5 will remain a workhorse Bcam for years to come, so I will not have lost anything. Going beyond cameras, this conversational style review, after 2 years, is also still the exemplar of the very best review on any camera. Other reviewers have tried to reach this level, but none have fully succeeded in reaching this quality of discussion and the way it reveals both the strengths and weaknesses of the camera, and what that means in real world use. I fully expect this review to remain the benchmark against which other reviews are compared for many years to come. It is fitting that a truly great camera is met by an equally great review. Thank you guys.

Quit honestly I was concerned about the auto focus but when I need it I just make sure I'm on f11 or above and I have no issues. When using the camera on my tripod I've honestly turned off auto focus and put it on manual and use wifi tethering with the iPhone app to focus. This guarantees I'm in focus close up and at distance. I don't think you mentioned focus peaking.

That was one seriously excellent review- and a joy to watch throughout. (even though I skipped the photo part :-) Compliments to you guys! Really curious to see/hear what your setup for run 'n gun is- walking around with the Sigma 18-35 + mics without any support?

I use this camera for pro stills and some video and this is a great stills camera if you use the prime lenses (and you know what you're doing as a photographer because no system will save a poser). The Panasonic Natural colour profile is surprisingly nice and like a more subtle Canon palette. Unfortunately the fly by wire lenses are nearly useless for video focus pulling but it's such a fantastic all-rounder in a form factor that enables new angles, positions and ideas that I can't go back to a huge clunky DSLR. The articulating screen should be on every camera. Hopefully they keep improving the system.

@thecamerastoretv I was told that the older 12-35 & 35-100mm lenses could be used with dual is 2 via a firmware update.

Great review you guys, I was actually really looking forward to hearing the stills capabilities of the GH5! I only wish you would have given a sense of the quality of the stills by comparing it with other cameras mainly known for stills (either mirrorless or DSLRs e.g. picture quality overall is similar of what you get from a [insert model here] or a [insert model here]). But again awesome work, as always!!

This review ruined my life! In all seriousness, been waiting for this review and you guys totally delivered! I'm a Sony A7s user but after seeing the image you guys get from the GH5, the detail in the image and especially the skin tones I'm convinced I have to change systems. Really appreciate the time you rook to discuss stills capabilities too. Looks like I will be hosting some eBay sales in the near future. Jordan - if you're reading this, what's the learning curve like changing from the Sony system to the Panasonic?

+Scott Maclean If you’ve been dealing with Sony menus, you can do anything! Seriously, it’s a pretty easy transition to make. If you grade log manually, it’s quite different, but over time I’ve found it easier than S-Log to work with. Jordan @ TCSTV

Not so fast. The A7S ii has much better video auto focus than the GH5 though. The GH5 has terrible auto focus compared to sony. Panasonic is good if you are willing to use manual focus, but if you need good af, either use Canon (my personal dslr video camera) or Sony.

FinalLugiaGuardian thanks for the thoughts. I have the original A7s and find the autofocus on video is pretty lousy (could be user error...). I don’t think I’d notice a drop in performance swapping to GH5... possibly even an increase! And that image stabilisation is a killer feature

+FinalLugiaGuardian A7S II AF is still pretty poor in Video, as it lacks Phase Detect AF. The A7R II, A6300, A6500, A9 and RX100 V are the Sony cameras to go for if Video AF is important to you. Jordan @ TCSTV
