I purchased a 1997 4Runner in 1997. I drive it 108,000 miles and gave it to daughter. She drove it 60,000 miles and then gave it to my grandson. He still drives it and it currently has 340,000 miles on it.

My brother has 3 4Runners (all 3rd Gens), one with 565,000 miles. Original engine and trans too. Maintain them well and they can go forever....... I feel special, as my 2002 4Runner only has 137,000 miles and has been super reliable but truthfully I have spent plenty of $ on preventive maintenance.

My '99 Taco has 246k miles. It's the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's a 4wd, SR5 V6. Off road It's been unstoppable. I may forego the casket and be buried in it. Sitting behind the wheel with a cigar in my mouth.

I had a 95 pickup before trading for this rig almost 27 years ago. It was a bright blue metallic single cab 4wd 4cyl with crank windows, no ac just used the nice rear slider!! Manual locking hubs... Put 24k miles on that little pickup to KCMO and St Louis for two years

That and it was probably garage stored or at least a parking deck to keep the paint solid for that long without fading especially with the decal on the side.

Other than the less road wind engine transmission noise in the other gen tacos yes agree... The hoods on those others are just SO large!

@@TomatoWithARifle i can barely lift the hood and prop it (its a struggle) on my mother's 2o11 tacoma single cab 4wd at stock height... the reach is too harsh on my neck on most days 8^{ and then i can hardly reach at most stuff in the engine bay (like the transmission checkStick) unlike my old gen1 engine compartment where more stuff is accessible but still things are a challenge to reach so it must just be me and my mobility situational issues?

I had a 96 Tacoma 2wD. I got t-boned by a Ram 3500(?The biggest Ram.) @ 117K miles. Me and my the truck were totaled. I get butterflies when I see a healthy 1st gen Tacoma. ❤ Hats off to Jeff for treating his so well. Beautiful.

That's how toyotas die. By getting into car accidents and getting totaled. My 2002 corolla got totaled 4 years ago. It only had 130k miles. It was in excellent condition

I had a 94 Toyota pickup, also 2WD and in 2011, this 92 year old pulled out in front of me and I hit his car and flipped over, cab down careening into the intersection. I was fine except for some stitches but the poor truck was toast.

Babysit I see a lot of this tacomas I great condition that are not been babysit they put them to work here in California construction landscaping and they still going strong. Not impressed by this tacoma

We are the original owners of a Toyota 1992 SR5 4X4 Extended cab pickup color: burgundy. We bought it new ($15,000) in December of 1991 in California and we moved it out with us to Missouri in 2022 for our retirement. Our truck is as clean as this truck and has 230,000 miles on it. It is true...if you love your truck, you will take care of it. In turn, it will take care of you! We get offers on it every time we drive it around. I collect parts for it also! Ha! Thanks for featuring this truck, it is a beauty!

I turned 16 in 1993 and certainly couldn’t afford paying that amount of money for a vehicle then! I had to wait until these were quite old to get them used. But I got 4 of these pickups since and I bought the 1993 SR5 I currently have over 15 years ago. These are my favorite vehicles. I also have 50 to 60 years old full size cars that I used to drive daily but they cost too much to operate now and some parts are getting hard to find for them.

My single-cab 1994 five-speed manual transmission rear-wheel-drive Toyota Pickup with a 22RE engine and 265,000 miles still runs perfectly. I bought it with about 150,000 miles for $2700 over ten years ago, and it has never broken down.

I had a 1989 Toyota Pickup -- 22RE -- it had 200,000 when I got it -- had over 350k when it was time to move it on -- sold it to a guy who worked at the Toyota plant in Princeton, IN -- it has almost 500k on it now -- pretty amazing really.

I was a Toyota tech for five years, gave up wrenching for a better opportunity seven years ago. I don't miss much about it, especially being flat rate when the shop was slow. However I really enjoy your channel and always pick up something new. Takes me back to the good memories (some bad lol). I've been down to the training center in Aurora many times. Absolutely! I have a 2004 Honda Element with 231,000 miles and like you I fix things quickly. Looks brand new and have only replaced vtec solenoid and intake manifold gasket and the radiator. Every time I take it for service the mechanic wants to buy it from me.

I bought a 1999 tacoma new. 2.7L 4x4 manual. I put 206,000 miles on it and sold it in 2010. Lots of highway driving. Didn't have any problems mechanically until it had over 100,000 miles. Was a great truck. I miss it now.

This truck's first issue of concern started in 2o19... A very strange rattle that would come and go under certain circumstances at first, seemed to get noticeably more consistent over the next 18 months until it finally broke! at 193k miles! No seasoned Toyota mechanic I took it to could find it and just told me it was the clutch throwout bearing so I just believed he knew whut he was talking about... Until he was dead wrong about it

I’m a Toyota Technician. I had a 97 Tacoma SR5 5 speed with the 4.30 gears and locking rear diff. Got it from the original owner who blew the head gasket on cylinder 4 at 267k miles. And that truck was just as clean as this one. The steering wheel wasn’t worn like this one, but the moon mist interior was immaculate. Absolutely amazing truck. I regret selling it. The previous owner of my 97 4Runner had a crack develop in the cylinder head at 279k, but it's a 3RZ, you had the 5VZ.

My beloved 1st gen Tacoma just smacked a deer and it's pretty bad. I have the radiator support straightened, but notice the engine tips down slightly on the passenger side. The oil pan looks level, so is that how the 2.4 liter naturally sits in the engine bay looking slightly tilted from the top view? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

@@jasonborn867 yes indeed. The valve cover is always slanted a bit towards the passenger side. Totally normal. But you or someone you know smacked that poor defenseless deer, not your Tacoma 🦌

@@subtegral Well that is a huge relief because I was thinking the motor mount was bent. When I get the new radiator bolted in and the shroud attached I'm hoping the fan will be centered, which in theory should mean the engine never shifted. Really a big thanks for responding to my question!

This taco had a deer hit by the fuel tank area in rural Missouri... A very small young deer whose head was barely over top of the tire but it happened so fast!!

We got a 05 4runner that was purchased brand new at the dealership and only had test drive miles on it. We still have it here at home with 240k miles and runs great. Never had any major issues, only replaced all the normal wear and tear stuff. And just to show you how reliable Toyota is, it’s got the original transmission fluid because the dealership never wanted to change it. I did want to change it after but it was already too late but after 19 years the transmission is just fine.

My 1989 truck had great paint that was shiny 25 years later. The main thing that I miss that my 2003 or my 2021 does not have is the cup holder. In the summertime, the beverages would stay cool with the AC blowing on them, and in the winter, my coffee would stay warm with the heat blowing on that. One of the main problems that I had with my 1989 was that the clutch/brake bracket would shatter. I replaced the bracket three times in 25 years. Finally, I welded and reinforced it and I never had a problem again. Today, that truck is in Costa Rica. The guy I sold it to bought it for that purpose.

Despite the hated 3VZE V6 that powered many of them, the 1989-95 generation is my favorite. I had 4 of them and still have a ‘93 SR5 as a daily driver (and it has the 3.0, not a 3.4 swap!)

yes, in 1998 Toyota got all weird with no more high-centered cup holder by the middle vents and put them in the console by the shifter

@@JAY-97-97 Many 96 - 98 3rd gen 4Runner owners do the cupholder mod to be like the 99 - '02 3rd gens. They say the cups are in the way of their precious HVAC switches, but that location has never bothered me. I reach around a tiny bit if I need to and it's no biggie.

Yes my clutch bracket broke twice, was welded twice. The first time it held up for a year. The second time they did it again...this time really did a good job at that body shop and never had another problem. The mechanic didn't want to touch it.

USA! Usa! Usa! I have a 08 scion tc manual with 375k miles . Basically a 2 door Camry ?.. Still runs like new . New clutch at 200k . Oil change and brake pads rotors that’s it. Oh yeah my fuel pump went bad . Easy change boom back on the road. Ima keep driving it till literally it just stops running.

Impressive. My 2004 Avalon has always been an outdoor car. Of course this means that it has road rash from parking lot clumbsy drivers, a fading paint job and upholstery that would be replaced if it didn't cost an arm and a leg. However, it runs like it did on the first day, brand new and it is absolutely clean inside. Permit to share some surprise I experienced. My first radiator lasted 17 years. Previous to buying this car, I had many years of observing people with radiator problems and I vowed to service this car's radiator more than recommended in the car manual which warranted the car for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever came first. I was shocked to read that people were doing good if a radiator lasted 10 years!

Test drove a very well-kept 99 Land cruiser a couple of years ago with 351k, but had been recently been lifted (3" OME) and I needed something more highway ready. Got an 04 Sequoia with only 209k. Things like this make me feel just fine about long term prospects (outside of rust!)

I can really appreciate someone taking good care of their car. When my father passed away recently, I bought his 2010 FJ with only 93,000 KM....in near mint shape. I plan to keep it looking that way and get at least 300,000 miles on it. Rust from salt is the enemy up here in Canada! Great vid, as always. Thanks, man!

how do you battle the winter salt monster?

It had annual Krown rust protection most of it's life. Once I got it, I took the time to remove any surface rust (mostly the rear bumper and diff) and give it a few coats of POR-15. Since then I am constantly washing it during the winter months in a touch-less carwash to keep the salt off. In the summer I am constantly cleaning, and looking for rust. Been applying rust protection myself as well now, as the techs don't seem to give a shit about your vehicle these days. May seem overkill...but I REALLY love this FJ.

This video brings back a lot of great memories. My first vehicle I bought after I graduated high school was a 2000 Tacoma that was essentially a three year new version of this vehicle in this video. I drove that truck for 18 years and I miss it all the time. I didn’t get to 340,000 miles but I came pretty close I almost got to 300,000 but some bimbo pulled Out in front of me and killed my truck. I bought a 2021 tundra after that.

Great video! I drove a 1994 4Runner from 1994 to 1998. Those cup holders were awesome. Being in front of the vents, they kept your drinks cold in the summer and warm in the winter.

82 Celica 5 speed bought it with eleven thousand miles in 1984 Drove it to 453000 miles and sold it in 1993 Tires oil changes valve adjustments and a clutch Did all myself back then. Wish I still had it

Wrong, Toyota is still building the highest quality vehicles on the road. Just go look at used cars for sale and you'll find countless Toyotas with well over 200k miles.

I have a 2003 Tacoma prerunner 2wd 3.4L v6 automatic 5vz-fe with 230k. I have done all the suspension work on it as well as new radiator. New front brakes and rotor, brake fluid service. The only thing I could not do was the timing belt and water pump. I've done all fluids as well. And of course multiple exterior door handles!!

how do you like the surface shield product? it is only a few years now on the market and I have not tried it as of yet. I first tried FF about 5 years ago and it totally SUCKED in the rear high wash areas, every time i ran through a heavy Iowa rain it would always wash right off, did not stick at all

I love mine. Original owner 1997 Tacoma 2.4L extended cab 412k miles. Still running great , ac still blows nipple hard cold lol . Never anything major just the maintenance on time and the only thing I considered to upgrade was to kyb gr2 strut and shocks that’s it. Still on original cat and o2s which is crazy stilll passes smog. I love this thing

Turns out the absolute coldest R134a AC can blow is 44°F. And that's as cold as mine ever gets (by vent thermometer)

@@subtegral mine does not blow out anywhere near that cold anymore, it used to LOL ... i think i have a dirty evaporator coil since there is NO cabin filter to block the dirty nature from coming in through the fresh air vent

got my 95 taco stick kickin at 481k miles. gotta fix a couple small leaks.. but it drives great. body needs love after being rear ended by a drunk and shoved into a fence.. but still drives straight2nd clutch, original engine (head gaskets were done early in its life though) california truck - no rot!

What a time capsule. It is beautiful. Nobody would believe that mileage was on that Tacoma. Thank you for respecting and treating his vehicle like he does and not releasing it to anyone elses care for that allignment. (Toyota should use that truck in one of their commericals.)

My 2002 4x4 V8 SR5 Long Bed Tundra is in similar condition at nearly 200,000 miles, it's especially nice to drive now that the front suspension has been rebuilt using OEM parts. My old '96 4x4 V6 SR5 T100 is under new management and still rolling down the road with about 350,000 miles, and it is almost as clean as that fantastic '97 Tacoma.

Toyotas last a very long time. Ivan from Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics worked on a 2000 Toyota Sienna that had over 560,000 miles on it and it runs like new. My 01 Corolla has 220,000 and it runs like new. No oil burning (I keep the oil clean and change it often). There are Toyotas that have 1 million miles on them.

All I can say is WOW, I just love seeing old Tacomas like this because the owner takes care of it just like I would and that is NOT a very common thing, When it comes to my vehicle, I treat it as if it was my baby and nothing is too good for my baby. When I see the way some people treat their vehicles and how they abuse them, it just makes me cringe so to see someone like Jeff treat his vehicle the way I would, with love and care, it just brings a smile to my face. Thanks for showing this beautiful truck on this video, it truly is a gem.

I still have my 1999 Tacoma single cab 4wd that I bought new. It's never been used for anything other than the occasional home depot run and a few weekly errands. It's the base model 2.7L in 056 natural white with no power options. It's never been driven off road or in the rain and always garaged. A true time capsule that gets a crazy amount of attention whenever I take it out. My daily driver is a 2003 corolla with nearly 350K trouble free miles.

Awesome. I had the generation before the first Tacoma which was just called Pickup. I had the 3.0L V6 4x4 Xtra cab with 5-speed manual. I drove it for 300,000 miles before I sold it and it also had the original clutch. I loved that truck and I had seller's remorse as soon as I sold it. My daily driver now is a Mazda 3 with a 6-speed manual and going on 180,000 miles with the original clutch so they last a long time.

I bought an absolutely immaculate 1997 Tacoma from an old retired guy in 2003 for $5000 cash. It was a 4x4 and he was having trouble getting in and out of it because of his age. It was a single cab, 4 cylinder, automatic. It had 98k on the odometer and was absolutely spotless inside and out. It was a beautiful dark green with tan interior. I drove it for a couple years and then sold it for $7500 when I was in a tight spot and needed some quick cash. My current daily driver is a white on gray 2020 Tacoma V6 4x4 SR with the SX package. It’s an awesome truck, but I still miss that 97 so bad!

I'm Canadian and in 2011 I imported a 1996 Landcruiser JDM Prado. Sold it in 2022. Still miss it. But, it had the 5VZ-FE. Beautiful engine. Bought it for 12,500$ in 2011. Sold it in 2022 for 11,300$. After putting 110,000kms on it 😂. She went to good new owners.

I Absolutely Love my Truck & wouldn't Get Rid of it or Sell it for Anything! I bought it Brand New 23 Yrs ago. It is a Daily Driver & I take very good care of it.
