A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician takes you on the journey of a car's certification process at the dealership going through the full Certified Pre Owned car inspection and reconditioning process.
So are you Buying a Certified Pre Owned car? In this video I will walk you through the entire process of certification for Toyota Certified Vehicles.
Certified Pre Owned cars go through a very thorough inspection to make sure that first it meets the standards set by the manufacturer. And most importantly that it lives to the expectations of the new owner.
Certified Pre Owned cars are usually more expensive that conventional used cars because of the inspection and reconditioning process that they go through.
I'll first explain the important differences between Certified cars and regular used cars. Then we'll start the process on the Sales department side on what they do before they even request certification from the Service department.
Once the Sales department does their due diligence to make sure that this car is worthy of certification then it heads over to the service department and the inspection journey begins.
The first thing in any technicians agenda for the Certified Inspection is surprisingly to knock the car off certification believe it or not. We want to make sure that this car doesn't have deal breakers. Things that would disqualify this car from certification regardless if it can be repaired or not.
Things like major accidents, Poor maintenance history or even excess wear and tear.
Certified inspections leave nothing unchecked. The meticulous inspection needs to be followed through to the end because unlike traditional used car inspections, Certified Pre Owned Cars involve the manufacturer in their certification process.
The information in this video can actually be used to check used cars. I shared many tips here that I hope you will find useful in your next used car shopping experience.

This video could be used as a learning tool for other people who want to be a certifed tech. Also, I had a 2000 Tundra. It had the TRD 4wd options. One of the things that I did noticed is that the tires were over sized as part of the option package. The spec sticker on the front door sill did not show the tire difference. The tire pressure for the standard size tire and the oversized tire was different. I just found the correct pressure from the tire dealer for my tires' size.

This video saved me a potentially really bad situation and losing money. Bought a Toyota CPO vehicle, when I went to take possession of vehicle I noticed a few things off and asked they fix them before taking it. Went home that night and saw this video and realized they must have never done an actual inspection, went and talked to the sales manager next day and they basically admitted they never did the inspection and that they do that all the time. Make sure you ask for the 160 point inspection checklist if you go buy a CPO.

My issue with CPO has always been that you are paying a premium based on trust that the car was inspected by a competent and honest tech. If we could all be assured that a master tech with a strong commitment to customer satisfaction was doing our inspection, it would be great, but I don't feel like that is the typical situation at many dealerships. I am glad to hear that AMD takes this very seriously and also glad to hear that Toyota leans on dealerships that are releasing CPOs that don't live up to their standards. The extended warranty is some protection, but that alone doesn't justify the price premium -- you really have to believe in the competence and honesty of the certifier to make these worthwhile.

Almost like there should be a Mechanic rating with feedback. High rating would instill better trust process associated with their signature on the CPO sheet.

I am on bmw forums all the time.. the number of horrible cpo cars that had been in very bad accidents is amazing. So the fraud element is very strong. If sales and service folks were competent and honest it would. Be great. For me it usually takes just a few minutes to see signs that nothing was actually checked or verified.. low filthy fluids.. worn tires. Bad front end parts ... etc.

I have run across people who didn't want me to pop the hood, crawl under the vehicle, or open the oil fill cap to see if there was sludge, and I walked away from those vehicles, because they had something to hide.

I bought my Camry used at 3 years old and 38,000 miles. Interior was pristine, ran perfectly with no leaks and everything worked. But it had quite a few grandma parking lot scratches on the bumpers and a big scratch on the drivers door. It had been on the lot 4 months probably because of the scratches. However I needed it for a work car so none of that mattered and got a great deal because of the scratches. Dealer did service it with fresh filters, wiper blades, and a oil change before putting it up for sale. The battery died 3 days after I bought it and the dealer replaced it free of charge. Car still runs great 2 years and 45,000 miles later. Pretty sure it would be a certified car in today’s market.

I had replaced the front brake pads 6 times and never replaced the break fluid. I do live in the South where they do not have to salt the roads, Never had to do nothing to the AC, I was just in this week with my wifes 2016 car with 40,000 miles on it to have the free tires rotated and balanced. They said they reconmended that I have a AC refresh done to it, I asked what that involved and was told they would take out the old freon and put in new freon, I just hate to go to a dealership for anything at all because of all the upselling they try to pull on you.

MY CERTIFED HORROR STORY- so I’ve bought three certifed Toyotas. Totally pleased with the first two. About four or so years ago I traded in one of those (my beloved 08 matrix xr) on a 2015 Prius C. 23k miles. So the next day at home I happen to find in the glove box, this huge stack of stuff from the previous owner! Like registration, and inspection stubs and emissions and insurance cards etc. strange they didn’t open the glove box? Well….in that stack of stuff was also a receipt for collision repair to the tune of about $7k. Now….it was from a Toyota dealership body shop(?)….so maybe that assured it was done right (Although I remember noticing the hood gap was off). This was NOT DISCLOSED to me. I was pissed. I went up there and ended up talking to the service manager. I wasn’t really in a position to give the car back at that point. Well fast forward some more…I noticed that the brake pedal was REALLY worn. I mean almsot more worn than my matrix with 239k miles….even more than the clutch pedal! Also….the steering wheel was very worn. Yes….I should’ve checked this stuff more throughly (I was really in a hurry to buy a car, the matrix had a few issues and I work out of state and needed to hit the road). Plus…like I said, I had amazing experiences buying certified Toyotas in the past so I really didn’t think I needed to be so thorough. Oh….there was also a hole worn through the floor carpet where ones heel would sit. So…that said, I now became REALLY suspicious that there was some monkey business with the odometer. To be honest I remember it took hours when I was there…like they were doing the inspection even though the car was listed in their website as certified. They proabbly didn’t want to do it until they had a buyer on the hook. I’m convinced now that the car had a lot more miles on it. I mean there’s simply no way that a Toyota carpet and brake pedal and steering wheel wears out that fast. I ended up going through a bankruptcy through this time…and initially was fully intent on keeping the car through the bankruptcy. Nope….once I started stewing over this odometer issue…and the undisclosed collision (radiator support, headlights, a fender, etc all listed on the receipt) I said Fk it and let ‘em come repo it. I wish I had more prof and could’ve reported them to the attorney general or something. Fking crooks. Newbold Toyota ofallon Illinois. . Oh…,I should add, I remember they showed me the car fax and it looked good. I saw nothing listed under accidents whatver. BUT, later after finding the receipt for the collision repair, I looked at the car fax online and was able to “drop down” on “other history” or “other damage” and sure enough there was collision listed there. Not sure how that wasn’t listed in the main accident history section of the carfax.

This is why you should always hire an outside mechanic to check over any used car you’re going to buy. Unfortunately, dealers prey on people that are in a hurry to get into a car. You probably even paid too much for it too since you were in a hurry, they love people that are just trying to get in and out in a hurry.

ALL *original parts* [except brake flex lines as Toyota stopped making them] - This car is now 20 years old and has had no issues. 1MZ-FE engine runs like clockwork. LOL - A/C blows VERY cold and engine does not burn oil. Like NEW... I'm so proud of this car.

I bought a certified preowned car from a Toyota dealership, and the thing leaked a rusted bucket in the rain, and the bumper cover started separating from the vehicle. Apparently, it had been in an accident and was "fixed" off book. The dealership took the Sienna back thankfully, and we replaced it with a 2022 Sienna, which is a much better van than the 2020 Sienna we bought..

This year I bought a 2017 ram, before I bought it I had it taken to a Dodge dealership in the city where the truck was in. I paid them to inspect the truck and test drive it, check the tires and tire pressure. I asked them check any check engine notices present and past. They sent me a copy of the inspection report that said the only thing wrong with the truck was it needed a engine air filter, oil change was coming due and it needed a cabine air filter. I had asked them to balance the tires also, which I paid for. The way I looked at it I was about to drive 8 hours to buy this truck if it checked out good. Spend money on hotel for one nights so having it checked out and walking away from it, if it was a bad truck, I though it was a good ideal to just walk away. We would be driving back on a Sunday, so good luck on any help on the road. Well we drove 8 hours, bought the truck spent the night in a hotel, the next morning Sunday started home. Less than five miles down the interstate the right front end started bouncing all over the road, a car passing by pointed at the front end of the truck. I called the guy I bought the truck from and asked what was going on, he said I must have hit something because the Dodge dealer had inspected it for me. We sat along the side of the interstate 4+ hours for our travel club to send someone out to change the tire, I have a bad back. The guy that changed the tire said that it look like the tire had seperated and that the spare looked like it was also seperated. Being Sunday and Walmart and Sam's club did not have our tire size in stock, so we had to spend extra day and night in a hotel. Monday morning we found a tire store that had our size tire about 1 mile from the hotel, we drove 20 mph and bought two new tires. The owner of the tire store said both tires were coming apart and he could not see how anyone at the Dodge dealership could have missed it. I will stop here, I could type about two more pages of things that they missed on their inspection for me. Money well wasted, live and learn, not everyone takes pride in their work.

Your story is chillingly horrifying; you could have had a serious accident with the tires separating like that. Worse still is that you paid the Dodge dealership to inspect the truck, to avoid such mishaps. Unfortunately, the technician who "inspected" it either wasn't well trained, was in a hurry (possibly pushed to rush to the next car) or didn't care to check everything. (I had a coworker who did the same job as I did, and he left out a LOT of steps and services that I always include; our manager was too busy to check behind him.)

If it takes 35 minutes just to discuss how to perform an inspections, imagine how long it takes to actually perform a thorough inspection. Many dealerships will not want one tech to take that long, if it's 2 hours or something like that.

Another great video, AMD! Thank You! Would you consider doing similar video about how a dealership determines a trade-in's value to be offered to a potential new car buyer as there are nicely kept (well maintained) trade-ins while there are some with issues, I hope the sales personal (or used car manager) does not just based on the Black/Blue Book Value...? Thanks!

BEWARE.......My friend bought a Mazda Miata, CERTIFIED. He got home & something just did not feel right. Next day he took it to a different dealership for a (used car purchase check), usually about $100. Guess what? They found $5000 in repairs needed & printed it for my friend. He took the printout back where he bought the car & demanded they fix everything. Lesson learned.....ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS take your used car purchase to a different dealership & PAY the $100 for the assessment. Best $100 you will ever spend. Saved me from buying 2 problem cars. Don't trust your mechanic for this, the same brand dealership knows where that particular car and year will break down. Now you have a good car, so use your buddy mechanic that you trust for repair work & maintenance. 👍👍👍 PS...He loved the Miata & it turned out to be a great car.

Thank you for your informations. Years ago I bought a USED Lexus from a Honda dealer. It was almost 6 years old and had about 70,000 miles. I took it home from no more than 12 miles away and parked it.That afternoon i went to check out the new ride and things it has inside. I was very happy with all the good things until I checked the engine oil. I saw nothing on the dipstick. I thought the car wasn’t on the leveled surface. I moved the vehicle to the better place. After few minutes I checked oil again. It was still nothing on the dipstick. Turn out it was more than 2 quarts low on oil. I assumed that the dealer did some kinds of inspections before they put it out on the lot. Now I know it better.
