A Mechanic Reviews the 2023 Genesis G90 The MotorTrend Car of The Year for 2023. But is it worthy of that title?
In this video we take a look at the 2023 Genesis G90. We start with a proper technical review under the hood then underneath the car.
Then we look at the exterior and interior. Then we talk about some things we don't like about it.

Do not buy this. I had a 2021 G80 bought used with 4k miles and sold it after 1 year since it was so bad. 1) Front Headliner was not secured to the roof. I could see the plastic clips if i pulled it down slightly. How did this get past quality control wtf? 2) Panoramic roof would flex and crack if i go over uneven surfaces, which never happened with any cars I've owned. Dealerships had 4 tries to fix but could not fix 3) Weak AC that is terribly inadequate for Texas weather. 4) Rides rough and not very comfortable even with non-run flats. Granted I had the 20 inch wheels but still. 5) Poor NVH in general even with acoustic laminated glass compared to other luxury cars I've owned. 6) Gas mileage for the V6 sits around 19 mph 60/40 highway city driving which is pretty mediocre. 7) Just does not drive as well overall as the Germans or Japanese. You can tell the Koreans brands just arent quite up to snuff when it comes to driving dynamics.

The Door Hinges are designed to be heavy because it will lock the opening angle and stay there. No more door accidentally slammed into the car next to you and etc. also, if you push while opening the door, the electric motor will accelerate the door to assist you. If your door is not closed or if you are too lazy to do it, long hold the lock button on the key fob and the car will closes all the doors automatically and even raise all the sunshades.

Only two things I disagree on is the infotainment system. I had the similar one in my GV70 and it was excellent. Fast, extremely smooth, graphics transitions were nice using the nvidia hardware, etc. Not sure why you're claiming it's slow or old unless it somehow uses a different hardware than the GV70 which I doubt it does. Second is the leather, I really like how it feels. Maybe it's subjective. I don't think I ever had anyone sit in my GV70 that didn't like how it felt, which uses the same materials as the G90.

@jerbsherb4391 In what way? My SQ7 Prestige with the luxury package takes a back seat to the G90 in a massive way as far as interior is concerned. This idea that the European luxury cars are just simply the best is absolutely hilarious. Go look at the engineering on the gen 1 Taycan vs the Model Y of the equivalent year. The Model Y literally dunked on that German engineering failure so hard and for a fraction of the price. Definitely not as nice of an interior, but the mechanical side was years ahead. Hard pill to swallow, Koreans are coming in hot. $3k for a suede headliner or $3k for what should be standard safety systems on the German brands like Audi is pathetic. An Elantra has more standard features lol

4:20 I normally trust your reviews, but had to fact check this tidbit. "Hyundai Motor Group’s new Dual Fuel Injection system comes with two injectors, one GDi and the other MPi, for each cylinder, taking advantage of the pros of both injector types. For low-to-mid speed everyday driving, the system uses the MPi injector; for high-speed driving in highways or expressways, the system uses the GDi injector. Such optimization of fuel injection type to the driving conditions has led to an improvement in both performance and fuel economy."

That’s something that was always very annoying in the auto start stop cars. I went and test drove a Mercedes a few years back and it was super humid that day, well the engine stopped at a light and the windows started to fog up because the water from the air con started evaporating. For the almost no MPG that saves it’s a stupid system. If I had a choice between auto start stop or a hybrid. I’d pick a hybrid all day because everything keeps working when the engine is off.

Great review as always! I’ve been getting a bit confused here with some of your reviews lately, and the reason like you said, it’s a luxury segment with opulence and bells and whistles…etc, so who (most buyers I mean) cares about calibre size, wish bones, cheap mufflers, and so forth…”Most” people who buy or lease this in this day and age, even used, would end up taking it to the dealership or excellent mechanics like yourself, due to the complexity you described, and that applies to almost all luxury vehicles. What matters here is you get the comfort and luxury you paid for. Thanks!

Ive had 2 Mercedes, including the S550. 2 BMWs including the 750Li, two Jaguars, 2 Lexus, And 2 Cadillacs. And now i traded my S550 in and bought the Genesis G90. So ive had a chance to own a couple of versions of all those cars. None of them were problem free. In fact, the ones i expected to be near perfect quality were the lexuses, but i had the most serious problems with them. The Mercedes S550 had system problems saying the brake was on when it wasn't, saying various sensors were not working, and the windshield cleaner stopped working. Plus it was starting to lean down a bit on the passenger side, indicating a problem with the air susoension. Those are $10,000 for a set of 4. Also it needed brakes and tires. Seems like every year i was spending $2,000 for 2 tires and 2 brakes. It was expensive to maintain. But the Genesis has a 10 year / 100 000 mile warrantee. That makes me feel more comfortable.

I thought people three year lease these types of vehicles.
@valserrie2122
@valserrie2122 5 ай бұрын
@spook5756 A lot do, I don't. My brother leases his cars because he can claim it 100% on his taxes. I can't write it off, so i have to look at the actual costs, long term, and I've found leasing to be more expensive in the long run. I've only ever leased 2 vehicles out of 30 I've had over the years. Dealers prefer to lease them because there is a lot more money in it for them. To me, a lease is like a bad, long-term rental. You keep paying payments forever, but you never build any equity. And you never get to own your car. You're always driving somebody elses car and yet you still have to maintain and repair it, you have to pay mileage fees if you go over the alloted miles, you have to have it in perfect condition when you give it back to them, or they charge premium fees and you have to guarantee the end value and pay the difference if it depreciates more than that. And if you don't like it after a year or two, you have to pay more stiff fees to get out of your lease contract. Look at how the lease is structured: The dealer takes the full msrp price of a new vehicle, then assume the estimated lowest depreciated value after 2 or 3 years, then take that as a lump sum and finance that at the highest current interest rate. People only look at the monthly payment. Since it's lower to pay the financed depreciation than it is to pay the financed full value of the car they think they are paying less - or they think they can drive a nicer car by leasing than they can by buying a lower level car. I don't like that whole scenario. The dealer is charging you through the nose. They get all the advantages, and you have no control. You will be making car payments for life. And you never get to own a vehicle. What makes a lot more sense for me is to simply buy it as a lease return as a 2 year old car. You're going to get a car with low mileage in perfect condition for half the value or less. Then, if you need to finance it, you can shop around for the best lowest interest rate. You have equity in the car, and when it's paid off, it's yours. You can drive it for years with no car payment. Case in point: my last Mercedes. Brand new the car was $137,500 plus taxes, fees, etc. Somebody paid over $100,000 to lease that just to drive it for 2 years. Then I bought it for $55k 2 years later, with only 20,000 miles on it. It was virtually like a new car, but roughly 1/3 the price. Then I drove it for 8 years and then traded it in for $20k. So, in the end, that guy who leased it paid $100k to drive it for 2 years, and I paid $35k to drive it for 8 years. His cost per year was about $50k. My cost per year was less than $10k per year for the same car. I didn't have any lease contract with all its fees, requirements, and restrictions. For me, that's a much more sensible way to go. As everybody knows, the biggest depreciation is in the first 2 years. That's what you are paying for plus interest when you lease. As for this G90 I just bought, a 2023 is $100k. But I actually like the 2022 model better. I like the looks better, (people ask me if it's a Bentley) plus I got the video screens in the back, and I got the 420hp naturally aspirated V8. Lots of power and no turbo lag, no turbos or supercharger to maintain over time. My Mercedes had to have twin turbos on its V8 to get in that range of power. The G90 only had 15k miles on it, and I only paid $60k. I paid cash, so no monthly payments ever. No interest, no financing fees, etc. Just $60k. And I get a full 10 year / 100k mile warranty. It is in perfect showroom condition and even still has the new car smell. If I own it for 8 years and then trade it in or sell it for 20k then, it will have cost me 40k to own it for 8 years. Which works out to $5k per year. Which is a very reasonable cost for a luxury car. And I won't have had to deal with mileage fees. Buyout / escspe fees, end-value fees, and all the other nonsense with leasing contracts. For me, this is by far the best way to have a nice car. But that's my opinion and experience. Your mileage may vary, as they say. ;-)

I really liked your review when it concerns the actual operation of how the 48v system works. I was very surprised to see they chose to run it thru a belt instead of directly to the transmission. Very disconcerting to me anyways. It really does seem like a weak link to what could have been a better used feature. And the AC thing bothers me a lot. Hopefully they will change this on later models. Thank you for a very in-depth review.

The "bolt" supplied to hang a wheel on while you line up another one or two and start the threads is not a new idea. My Mercedes-Benzes from the 70s-80s also had that feature. It made changing wheels MUCH EASIER. As I struggle to line up and hold a 235/55 R20 wheel and tire on my RX, I think of the "good old days." Beautiful car, but only a couple hundred will be sold a year. This car has 3 things working against it. 1: It's not an SUV (I love sedans, but the majority don't) 2: Not many are signing up to pay $100k for a Hyundai. Sorry, Genesis. 3: No real cutting edge powertrain. This should've been a powerful V8 or dare I say a full EV.

Having the V6 is going to hurt it in the long run. Also having sales in very small numbers means that your cargoes obsolete much faster as parts inventory and body parts disappear. I found that out with a Veloster that isn't that old. Parts guy told me it's the same with any models that sell in small volumes it's not just Veloster or Hyundai. If this G90 only sells 5000 a year for 4 years. they're not gonna make parts like they would for Elantra or Sonata. Buyer beware 5 years after the last of the current model is sold.

I think that despite its flaws, Genesis is really trying their best. The Motortrend review for CoTY makes lots of valid points about how this car is truly industry-leading. Your criticisms are valid though, but I have hope about them. Motortrend mentioned that they feel as if their feedback on their previous G90 reviews was noted and worked on, so I’m optimistic that they actively listen to the reviewers out here. I think that Genesis is on the right track to becoming an established brand in the segment, pulling off a Lexus-esque stunt. Hoping this continues.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Genesis, with port injection, a V6 engine, and it has been unbelievably reliable. Though direct injection would have improved power and fuel mileage, I am glad that my car doesn't have it. I like not having to worry about the carbon build up. I could not stand the original suspension, and put the ARK aftermarket (made by Hyundai) suspension that lowered the car by an inch. The original suspensions wallowed too much for me. After 176,000 miles, I have had a window regulator fail on the left rear door, the door locks on the left side both had to be replaced because they would not work in hot weather. I have replaced the front brakes only once at 100,000 miles. TPMS sensor went bad, not in the tire sensors, rather the computer that receives the TPMS signaling. That was about $350 at the dealer. Oil and filter changes every 7500 to 10,000 miles with full synthetic. I have no oil leaks, still have the original air conditioner with original charge. Spark plugs at 100K miles, and transmission fluid replacement every 60K miles. Based on this car, I would buy a Genesis again, but now, after watching this review, I may buy another used low mileage older Genesis. I fear the complications of the new Hyundai designs. I love the Car Care Nut, and watch all his videos, and I know he is calling it as he sees it, but there is no question that he is biased for Toyota designs, though he gave a positive review for the Mazda CX-5. He clearly doesn't not like the Hyundai/Kia hybrid system. He clearly doesn't like cars with only direct fuel injection (Neither do I), and he doesn't like there to be be too many belts that need to be replaced. Can't blame him there. If I lived close to him, and owned a toyota product, I would definitely wait in line to have him service the vehicle.

I own a 2017 Genesis G90 5.0 Htrac Ultimate, love driving it. Lowers my blood pressure everytime I start it up. The 5.0 Tau engine is a beast, this engine will easily do 500k miles with rountine service. Just make sure you change the oil every 5000 miles rotate the tires as well. Check your owners manual for every other fluid that needs to be changed. I change my own engine air filters, two of them every 30k miles, the cabin filter behind the glove compartment as well. Keep your oil topped up by checking it every 1000 to 2000 miles it takes 5w20 quaker state. I use full Synthetic Oil, runs beautifully. I am never selling mines, Hyundai/Genesis stop producing their naturally aspirated v8 engines. On a long stretch of straight smooth road I've had mines up to 140MPH could not hear any outside noise, moving like a jet on the road.

Can you please do a video reviewing The New 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport from a well-experienced mechanic point of view. I trust your videos, reviews, opinions, & suggestions. Thank you, and God bless you.

Good afternoon, my daughter is looking to buy a used Toyota AWD SUV. Do you have any suggestions on what we should look for in a used SUV or what to stay away from. Thank you PS. I love watching your videos Regards Lewis Stafrace From Toronto Canada

Love this kind of video 🙂 You did an excellent job covering lots and lots of things most KZfaq reviewers just glaze over. Your leaps and bounds over what most consider a great KZfaq reviewer.

This is because most KZfaqrs are reviewing the standard model of the G90 and not this Electrified version forgot to insert into the title of this video. EVERYTHING he talks about here regarding the build & mechanics is 100% BOGUS because this is NOT the standard G90 build.

Genesis isn’t about creating a competing luxury brand. They’re not marketing it like Lexus does there cars. The point of Genesis is to make the regular Hyundai and Kia cars seem more luxurious, cool and modern (and reliable) by association. Genesis is there to help sell those Kia 6 EVs. And Ioniq 5s. Now we need a proper Genesis sports car.
