The English dub of the Pokémon anime has had a long and bumpy history since it came on the scene in September 1998, but have you ever wanted to know the (near) complete history of where it started to where it is today? In this video we'll be going into the nitty gritty of it all, from its beginnings at TAJ Productions, its transitions and swaps to various studios like 4Kids Entertainment, TAJ (again?), DuArt, and all the other parties involved. If you thought of the dub as one thing going in, you may surprised what you learn coming out of this video. So sit back, relax, and enjoy.

I did read somewhere that PUSA and 4Kids ended up getting into a lengthy lawsuit over the "Pokémon" licensing agreement. It was eventually settled in 2010 and also saw PUSA/TPCi regain control of the original 4Kids dub. Because even though 4Kids lost the license they somehow managed to still have the ancillary rights. It's a messy situation...

In Sweden the Voice Actor for Ash Said in an qua that the tv Company TV4 which handleld the dub, decided that around the johto years to not renew the series. They thought the fad would pass. So around 60% of johto and a good chunk of orange islands was never dubbed to swedish. All the previous and following seasons were dubbed. Might make a video for it one day...

Same with Denmark (And probably also Norway). Only the last few episodes of Johto series was ever dubbed. My guess is, after dubbing the entire Indigo League and some of Orange Islands, they wanna skip to the newest contents of the series, which was Advanced Generation. Which was a good move, because it would had taken *Quite* a while to get it finished.

Another notable voice director at TAJ is someone I think many of us are familiar with more for his voice work. Anthony Salerno got started on Pokemon around season 2 doing episodes starting from “Riddle Me This” up to “The Chikorita Rescue”. He was even the voice director for the INFAMOUS banned episode “Beauty and the Beach”. He came back starting at “Beauty and the Breeder” up to “Imitation Confrontation” as well as the 5th movie and Mewtwo Returns before stepping down and sticking to voice acting starting with Jackson in the Johto League. Though he is best know as THE CHAZZ in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Though he stepped down from Pokémon when the change up happened he did come back in XY as Ramos.

I was already kinda aware with a few of the things mentioned in this video but it's still cool to have a video like this up for anyone curious. Even with all this context though, it's such a shame of how ugly things turned during 4Kid's later run with the Pokemon franchise when they unceremoniously fired all the OG voice actors. I still remember when Veronica Taylor, Rachel Lillis, and Eric Stuart recounted what that was like when they went into work and were notified the moment they showed up that they were let go. They could've at least sent them an email or phone call. And still, I really do miss the old voices for the main cast. i'm currently in the middle of re-watching the old Pokemon for like the hundredth time now (lol) and I'm just remembering how great I thought the voices were before TPCI took over. And even thought it's been 15+ years, I'm still not a fan of the new voices, they just sound generic and lack personality in my opinion. I know that people who grew up with the TPCI dub won't agree and may not get where I'm coming from and that's fine, I guess I was just too spoiled with the 4Kids acting and how I genuinely believe Pokemon was one of their best works in terms of voice casting. Anyway, great video. :)

@@sirmel11 Subjective taste is really all there is when it comes to the topic of voice acting because I disagree. Speaking about Ash, yeah his OG voice sounds more cartoonish but I didn't mind that at all because unlike Sarah Natochenny's voice for Ash which to my ears sounds strained and forced, Veronica managed to make Ash sound like he had more personality and her voice didn't seem like it was as forced and/or strained. It also helps that Veronica's Ash could emote beautifully, when it came to emotional scenes, she just nailed them in my opinion.
@friendlyotaku9525
@friendlyotaku9525 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely disagree. I do think the transition period was rough and early on a lot of the voices were a bit off but over time they massively improved, especially Sarah who currently sounds the best she has ever sounded - it helps that she stopped trying to imitate Veronica Taylor and made Ash her own and considering these voice actors have done it for 15 years now I have a lot of respect for them! I really liked the original cast too but the current cast is very good right now, I'm also loving all the amazing new talent they are bringing on board now too.

@@friendlyotaku9525 Again, we'll have to agree to disagree because 15 years later and I still don't like the TPCI cast. I'd argue the opportunity is still there (even though the competition might be a bit tougher), but even before the switch, Pokemon was getting talent in from out of town (Texas-based actors mainly) so I think this was the next natural step, and honestly I think it's the best outcome we could've gotten, considering a lot of the cast had moved out there in the years since.

There is something that doesn't light up about the "music section". As I know, if you license to dub a series or movie, you shouldn't need to pay additionally for the background music or tv-sized opening/ending instrumentals, since you paid the license for the dub, series, episode already, right? I thought you would get an additional audio track without the voices from the original dub, or not? I mean...otherwise why would all the other countries in Europe, especially those who have lower budget studios end up paying the license for the music in the English dub - or did I get something wrong here?

The original Japanese version with subtitles are better than the non-canon English dub... 4Kids TPCi should had done that in the first they were selfish!! Their one of the worst companies in the world.

The Japanese sub came first, the English is very bad, they replaced almost all the themes, removed the kanjis and banned most of the episodes.

@@ShadowMike202 Dude the only episodes that they banned are throwaway episodes. Blame the overly sensitive Americans for that, they are responsible for that crap.

nice video but you forgot one detail the real reason why they didn't bring back the original Pokémon voice actors was because they have to be in a union production since TGCI was now a union based they could not brings actors due to union problems. not because they wanted a cheap production of the show.

Pokemon was, and still is a non-union show. Many actors from the original show have come back since the switch. Some actors have also gone uncredited because they've become union actors in the years since.

but also due to financial problems with 4kids they decided focus on properties they actually own instead of their licensed properties which is why they sold it to Taj. but at least they the show is way more accurate to the Japanese version and they had less censorship than 4kids, right?

It's one show being translated into another language. That's literally a dub.

I will admit that 4Kids did indeed make some bad English dubs, but I thought "Pokémon" was their best work. It was not always faithful to the original Japanese and the script writers wanted PokéShipping, but it was a good dub. Pokémon USA's dub well it has mixed reception especially with Ash and TRio's voices it's a decent dub, but it definitely does not follow the original Japanese script. Then the DuArt era was a rapid decline now with it being by Inyuno-SDI it is not even comparable to the TAJ produced episodes. At this rate the dub will not last much longer as the quality continues to decline.

As far as I see the TCPI dub is more faithful to the Japanese version than 4kids I hardly see major changes like censorship & script changes that impacts the story big the main issue I see is the music changes the dub was great by the time diamond & pearl was finishing & into BW era then...yeah it sort of went downhill lol

@@yarc9 Eh the English Dub, at least the 2.B.A Master soundtrack used for the Indigo League dub was great. Cheesy but perfect for an American audience since Pop was dominating at the time. I've heard a few of the Japanese songs and they're good too, I like both but I won't crap on the 2BA master dub music because I really do think it worked and sounded good.

@@yarc9 Yeah the penny pinching is real with the English dub. God forbid they have to pay the Japanese a penny extra for some tunes that actually fit the mood of the scenes.

Honestly Veronica Taylor no longer voicing Ash KILLED the show for me, I think if they had kept only her and no one else I’d still be a huge fan of the anime, but now even the epic episodes in the Sinnoh and Kalos league make me cringe a little because that’s just not the Ash I grew up with No offense to Sarah Natochenny I think she’s doing a great job, but changing a voice after 8 very long seasons and several movies is just a lot to handle when that was your childhood
