While sneaker hype has increased sneaker culture has suffered a tremendous blow. What was once reserved for the subculture has become a global phenomenon. With the proliferation of resellers and resale platforms however the culture that birthed the hype is struggling to find its identity in this new era of fashion and culture.

The older you get the less you care about such things. There's a steady stream of young kids getting caught up in the hype and they too will tap out eventually only to be replaced by the next generation.

This… this is something I needed to read. Mid-thirties and got into sneakers during the pandemic (you know, during a time where you’d rarely go outside), and while I was never into any of the hype sneakers, I’d get mad for some odd ass reason: resellers, scalping, the same three sneakers being released in different colors, the huge counterfeit market. But now I realize that I’m too damn old to care. I get stressed out for nothing. Anyway that’s all for my random ramblings!

@@amcstryker7 if you just got into sneakers during the pandemic than you wouldn’t really understand. I’ve been into sneakers since the early 2000s when I was in elementary school, I’m almost 30 now and my love for sneakers has only increased! I accepted a long long time ago , way before the pandemic that I won’t be able to get EVERY sneaker release I want that’s why I don’t care for the resale market or hype or any of that because to true sneakerheads there will always be sneakers in stores/online just as good as the over-hyped sneakers and I use the overhyped/overpriced sneakers just as motivation to work hard in order to get them and to say I finally got one of my grails. The older I get, the more money I make and the more shoes I buy lol

The more I think about it, the more I put the blame on Nike side. They have the power to produce more but choose not then create the scarcity for their own product to maintain the cool factor of the brand. This facilitate the backdoors, reps, and resellers. Aime and NB used a pre order system. Yeezy and Adidas keep releasing a decent amount of retros from time to time. Salomon releases a decent amount of colourway everyseason. Asics and Reebok collabs are basically sitting everywhere. When we talk about so called "culture", it's basically just consumerism and I have given up for that nonsense.

As an old head in the game, there is a silver lining in all of this for me. Nobody close to me (mainly my wife) 24+ years ago shared or supported my sneaker collecting interest and they often blasted me for wasting my money. With all of the hype today, there is now a ton of monetary value in the inventory that I hold so I am thankful for that. I have enough sneakers and cherish all of the old stories of hunting down sneakers and building relationships around the US. I had my time and I just wish people today could experience getting the shoe that really want, when they want it and at a fair retail price.

As someone who finally was able to understand sneaker culture and fashion through you with your "10 schockingly hyped sneakers in Japan" I can say that the hresale hype has killed a lot for me. I used to follow releases, would scour ebay till 3AM looking for deals and overall just looked out for designs. As some hype swept me up I would try to cop and 2019 really felt like the last year I could get in if I wanted it. Buying my first pair of Jordans from a store that by the time I could come back from the pandemic, only sold them as a cosignment store was disappointing. I would be happy to walk across multiple Ross and Outlet stores to find deals be it Ultraboosts, or my FoG Skylons, but once the hype got out of hand and I just missed on any release I tried for, and going to Outlet stores and seeing only resellers that were buying in bulk, checking stockx every aisle, and not even hiding it dressed in a hypebeast outfit the price of that aisle. It just hurt, cause when even your local Ross isn't safe from resellers then it feels hard to grow your style. To obtain things and try them on, it was just as important to mallrat for me and actually try things on as it was to watch the hype of sites. To learn that my feet were not made for 97s, that adiprene was actually comfier for me than boost, or how Asics just felt so good to walk in. It turned my favorite sneakers ever from the hype models into the less hyped pairs as my favorite Nikes are now the Pegasus Turbo and Foamposite AF1. My favorite Adidas is the Temper Run. My most worn NB is the 1300 I started going to smaller brands and having a blast. Getting a pair of 990s at an outlet store changed me, finding a sneaker boutique that sold Li-Nings taught me that chinese brands make the best insoles, my favorite discovery being my visit to a dead mall and copping Tretorns that had sat for so long they were basically giving them away and not realizing it was an Andre 3000 collab with no hype behind it because the brand doesn't even sell shoes on their US online store. I may never get my grails, but at the very least the explosion of the sneaker market still means there's hidden treasures to be found or even hype models because even for all I said, I write this comment on the same day I got a pair of Jordan 1 centre courts for 40 dollars from an outlet. I don't think resale is inherently wrong as it was the way I got into the culture since by the time I found your video, those models weren't in stores and the lack of hype made them attractive to buy but it is definitely annoying and disheartening to see resellers so often. Cause it doesn't make it feel like I'm with another enthusiast like if I'm at a skate shop talking sneakers or a running store, but like I'm in a race to grab things before it's seen for profit

those tretorns were highly slept on bro...the lows were cool but i lost my mind seeing those black/purple/white high top tretorns...they were on clearance on finishline site years ago. I should've copped, smh. I don't think they had my size. Like u, i stopped trying to go for "hyped releases" it can be a simple OG colorway like the Jordan 4 fire reds (2020 retro i think) i struck out on shock drop and release day....and i still have the 2012 jordan 4 fire red...they just need a little paint for restoration. The other brands and other models are a lot more exciting. Now I'm getting on my nike sock dart kick for the summer. They are dirt cheap and no 1 knows about them...no collabs or hype. Just steal deals for them. Besides, I have 250+ kicks, I'm selective on buying too....i just rather much enjoy the shoes I have. Especially, if they're re-releasing kicks i have already, bred 4s, fire red 4s, military blue 4s(coming soon), etc...don't forget to have fun. Variety is the spice of life...i got puma blaze of glorys, nb 1500s, etc its fun choosing different kicks no 1 seen before. I snap necks with my nike air footscapes all the time...because it looks weird with a bright lace swap, and the lace is running on the side of the shoe.

I think all the hype releases have taken a lot of the creativity and storytelling from the sneaker culture. Nowadays Nike will just piece a random story together that isn't even well researched and use that to justify slapping a new color way onto a Jordan 1 . I hope at some point that the appreciation for a good story and actually good quality will come back into the mainstream but that just isn't the case as of now.

Resellers in Houston are vicious, marking up 125% and up. They open spots in the mall then buy up everything in the mall before regular people can get in the stores. Feel sorry for the people that think this is the only way they can cop is to overpay. Robbing their own community and acting like they are providing a service. And the egos 🙄. If I don't hit on release date for retail, oh well just wait for the next release in a couple days or weeks.

@@THECASUALco So then it’s not really the resellers fault. They aren’t controlling the prices if some Jordan 1 colorways sell for $2K while other colorways sell for near retail. @@THECASUALco I don't think this is fully true. I think part of this goes to understanding consumer culture. There are shoes that I would've bought if I could've just walked into a store, tried them on, and bought them. But, since I believed that I would waste my time going to a store to try and buy it, the urge to have that shoe also dimmed. In accepting that I couldn't buy it through regular retail, I also accepted that I didn't want the shoe that much. By the time I visited the store for another reason and saw the shoe sitting on the shelf, that binge shopping / spontaneous spending urge was gone. Most of the sneakers I own I actually bought through resale after I realized that I really did want the shoe. But, there are many more I would've bought before making that judgement if they were readily available. I think this is well documented and well researched. It's also why companies like Amazon that have made buying things so much easier have flourished.

Its the early 2000s niketalk is popin. Footlocker backdoors are just a rumor and boutiques are underground havens for streetwear/sneakerheads/artists. Now there's 100s of boutiques with no stories or soul to them and where I'm from. The most legendary boutiques closed due to the culture shift and being bought out for urban development. Toronto had Goodfoot, stolen riches. 2 shops that would help shape early sneaker culture in Toronto and even played a part in Drakes early career. Ahhh the good old days.

Lol there used to be a Sears in my neighbourhood but now it is a flagship Tesla Dealership. I don't think brands want to make their product easier to authenticate via blockchain because that just gives the resell market more fuel because new buyers who were once too skeptical to partake, would begin to participate because their skepticism would be alleviated. This in turn would create more demand for the same, or lesser (because fakes would be sniffed out) supply in a market that already has highly inelastic demand based on the ridiculous prices people regularly pay for resold merchandise. The big brands hate resellers because of the prices they can charge for the same item second hand. If the first party brands suddenly decided to charge the prices that they know resellers will charge the second the production run sells out, they would be dragged through the gutter and publicly slammed.

So I dont have any skin in the game for sneakers so i'll draw the parallel to something i know which is luxury purses. luxury handbags have had the same issue that sneakers have now. reps are running a muck, prices skyrocketing in retail and resell, and even brands suing over resell. Atleast with handbags once you get into chanel, lv, hermes terrority they have serial numbers which i guess would be a primative version of the block chain for authentication. super fakes are definitely real and have fooled even store associates. in the resale market i know places like the purse forum have spoken about how luxury brands track buyers and will even ban them from purchasing due to finding out that they are resellers. i have seen bags from special collection get sold out in hours if not minutes and out on ebay in week ,if they had it delivered, or hours if they got it in store. Currently there is a suit from Chanel against a popular luxury reseller store called TheRealReal for antitrust and selling fakes. Not sure how it will turn out but i guess it would be similar to nike and stockX

Personally i have one way of handling resell culture, Every customer must write down their ACTUAL email, not a fake one, must show proof that is your main email to even purchase a shoe or enter a raffle, To buy online every customer is ip traced and tracked and it must match the shipping address or you get sent back to the homepage and u gotta start over therefore reducing chance to purchase leaving it to a REAL customer… Only 1-2 pairs can be purchased period, not at a time, period… preventing the ability for someone to make 2 accounts is crucial if you lose your account than tough luck, make a password you wont forget..

Reselling is and will always be a thing with any limited collectibility. Once the botting formula was perfected everything went to sht. When people had to put in actual footwork just to resell there was an element in there that kept it fair.

The one thing I have to say about all this hype ruining sneakers for me, is that it actually made me love them more. And I mean in the sense that now I don't bother looking at Nike release the same shoe again. If I was stuck in that, nike Jordan and Adidas only mindset, I wouldn't have never found the mizuno wave rider 1s or Diadora n9000s or fusion 2.0s or gel lyte 3s. Which in turn helped me realize what I actually want my sneakers to look like and what is my actual style. Ever since, there's way less, "that looked better in my head" days and more random people complimenting me. Not that what others think about you should matter but hey, we're all a little vain or is that just me lol Would be cool if the companies that have been making shoes for decades could make enough for the people that want them though. I applaud the general acceptance of resale as a legitimate staple of one's wardrobe and think it's a positive. Yes I understand you are talking about a different context - hypebeast releases and the exchange of mostly virgin sneakers. But as a sustainability advocate - the sharp rise in popularity of vintage re-salers as well as the used shoe market is a good sign of the generational widespread acceptance of wearing used clothing. Diverting good pieces from the landfill and back into closets for extended use. Lowering the desire for overproducing virgin materials, while giving good designs from the past a chance to shine again and building a more circular economy of fashion and distancing from planet destroying fast fashion methods.

Safe to say my feet grew 3 sizes during my time there and all my shoes and clothing that stopped fitting were always sold for what I bought them for or more AFTER being worn. Now its just kids and lames who seek social validation. There's no great story that comes with most sneakers nowadays. Its all to make money now..TF is a Ben and Jerry's skate shoe? Back in the day drops used to have meaning and were connected to hip hop or skate culture.

Blockchain should be a non-starter for an industry that wants to reduce it's impact on the environment. Not to mention the fact that NFTs are awfully prone to being straight up stolen. Add to that, the increased cost of purchasing sneakers that would result from gas fees or some similar hidden cost of getting that pair of kicks on the blockchain. Yes, sneaker culture has a resale problem, but I am not convinced that any part of the solution lies within blockchain technology.
@THECASUALco

We're not talking about NFTs though. Just blockchain technology. It's always interesting to hear people say things about the environment now when it comes to Blockchain tech when it's literally been around for more than 15 years commercially. It's as if we can't make a more efficient method that would not only be less stress on the environment but good for consumers. To that end its not a non-starter it's actually quite the opposite. It IS the starter. Producing more causes the same amount of stress on the environment, likely more and all online avenues lead to manipulation like bots. Not to mention the detrimental effects of pirating and replicas. A technical solution lies somewhere and the best example we have (at the moment) is blockchain technology. Build from that like we do everything else.

Reps are becoming popular for a reason. Many of us are not high schoolers who are afraid to get called out, or using our parents money to buy these sneakers. Many great points made in this video! I’ve been avoiding hype releases and sneakers as well. There are always other options (and better many times).

@@colmcgillveray1010 Haha nice, I have a pair of Nike Sacai LD Waffle reps I got for around $90 shipped. I had the same model that were legit (paid $325 on Flight Club) and the $90 ones are almost identical and just as comfortable. Nikes aren’t that great quality wise and can be easily replicated, most Nike’s are just not worth more than $200…

I think the general sneaker culture is pretty dead, with everybody and there mom's wearing panda dunks, aj1s, aj4s and referring to them selfs as sneaker heads, with out knowing shit about the topic. This is the new mainstream. However subcultures will still be existing, like Adidas superstar heads or Reebok pump heads or like my self bapeata heads. Those subcultures will keep a shoe cool until hype comes and kills it. The endless cycle like we saw with dunks or will see with Airmax 1s.

you talk like reps are only bigger now so people can exploit the situation to resell them. couldn't be further from the truth the fact is this hype is big enough where every shoe garners 1 million people wanting them yet they still only put out 60-80k pairs. a lot of people still want these shoes but don't want to give in to this monetary system that leads most of these coveted shoes to not ever be worn as the arbitrary value attached them is is too high to justify
@THECASUALco
@THECASUALco 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not what was said so let’s be clear: I said (paraphrasing of course) the reason reps are bigger is because the after market is lucrative. If only 80K pairs are made then what’s the best solution? Either buy resale or reps (if you truly want the shoe). You’re arguing about manufacturing and scarcity imposed by the companies. I know those companies won’t change so there’s no point to bring up increasing stock amounts despite the outcry from fans.

I disagree with this take, the real PROBLEM is people wanting to dress exactly like everyone else, there's no sense of individuality anymore and you focused way too much on FAKES, stock x and whatever exists because of FAKES, only people with low self-esteem and desire to impress others wear FAKES.
@THECASUALco

Everyone is trying to impress someone. KZfaqrs, stylists, workers, models, athletes. Impressing others is how the world works and how people build their cache. It’s not just low self esteem, people recognize that influence is powerful and when used correctly can propel status.

To me, resale is a necessary evil. Who cares , there are a million other shoes out and there will be a million more coming out. You’re not supposed to get EVERYTHING you want because you THINK you’re entitled to it. Move onto the next release.

Did that already too. Nobody watched it. People ask me to do stuff, I do it, and then nobody cares. It happens every time and then when we rehash a topic people seem to watch. The demands people have and then expect me to do EVERYTHING they want me to do definitely wanes and simply makes this endeavor unenjoyable to say the least.
