IMO he really should have just accepted he butchered her name. Swapped vowels are not okay, like... Joe Bedin? Reese's Sanuk? See what I mean? The Gary/Gerry thing is understandable, but McDormand is a contemporary figure, a famous person more or less. And it's not some name brought in from a foreign language either, not really.

He wasn't right. It's the same kind of thing as the change in pronunciation from "Quixote" to "quixotic". The "x" changes phonemes, just as the "g" in Gerry (pronounced the same as "Gary") and gerrymander (pronounced the same as "jerry"mander) changes phonemes.

I agree. I didn’t like him glad he lost the tournament of champions and his 12th episode. Glad he didn’t become close to beating Ken Jennings back then. He was the worst. Just like Jonathan Fisher recently when he beat Matt Amodio but with Arthur, that wasn’t the case. Arthur always plays for the tie instead of doing $1 more? Come on! That’s probably why they do tiebreakers now.

I think the mispronunciation calls were correct on both counts (assuming he got the points for Gerry.) McDarmond is clearly wrong, indicating a genuine misspelling, while the name Gerry would normally be pronounced Jerry and is pronounced that way in the word derived from it. Having said that, I often find Alex annoying, dismissive, or arrogant but that contestant was a total arse. (Spelled the way the Brits pronounce it, just FYI!)
