Kirk has ultimate power to put any song on my list (within reason), and for our anniversary he decided to teach me about Styx. "Lady" is one of the first power ballads ever written, and its message was so touching I nearly broke down crying here. Also, Dennis DeYoung's vocals are AMAZING!

You must explore the Styx rabbit hole. In addition to the great suggestions like Sail Away, Lorelei, Show Me the Way. There is a real difference in the vocal tone of fellow band mate Tommy Shaw who has some great songs like Renegade, Crystal Ball, Fooling Yourself, and Blue Collar Man.

I wrote the words to this song on a card in 1973 to a girl who I met at work.. I was 20 and she was 19. I told her that I was going to marry her, and that scared the crap out of her… This year, we’ll be celebrating our 47th anniversary…. Love You Dear.

You are a one in a million couple. I should have done the same with a girl I met when I was 16. I did not. I thought I was not good enough. Only to find out years later after we both messed up our lives that she was waiting just for me to do exactly something like that. I am 66 now. One waisted life to go into the big book.

Dennis and I were friends living on the same block in Chicago, I went to grade school with him for eight years and then I moved away after my mother passed away when I was 14. Once I stopped by his house in 1972 to have a beer and just catch up on his life. The next thing that happen was Dennis singing a new song that he just wrote for his wife. I was one of the first to hear LADY. To this day we are still friends after all.

Yah my dad got the opportunity to see them practice in a studio session near Franklin park when he was working back in the 90s. I believe that was the time they got back together briefly.

Me, too! It was so fun to see all the new Queen fans after the movie and their discovery of Freddy Mercury. Same with Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Prince, Tom Petty. Unfortunately, it oftentimes happens after the death of the musician.

Dennis De Young and his wife Suzanne comprise one of the greatest love stories in Show Biz. They were high school sweethearts who married in 1970. De Young wrote two songs for Suzanne that became big hits... this song and "Babe" in 1979. The latter was never meant to be put out to the public, but he wrote it and had his band mates perform it with him for Suzanne's birthday. Record execs heard it and strongly urged Styx to put it on their upcoming album, correctly anticipating that it would be a big hit. The two, well into their 70s, are still married today, after 53 years together.

Not only have Dennis and Suzanne been married for 53 years…but they wed in January, in CHICAGO. If that's not love, what is? (Them Chicago winters are harsh. But they were too in love to wait for the summer. Either that, or Dennis wanted to make sure he got that draft deferment lined up in case the Army wanted to send him to Viet Nam. But I prefer the romantic version.)

This is a live version. You must listen to the studio version to totally capture the beauty of this song! Styx is definitely one of my favorite bands and I so miss when Dennis DeYoung was the lead singer. They do still have an excellent singer as Dennis had to fade away due to health issues.. Still love them as a band that shaped the 80s!!

Love Styx. From the first time I heard Come Sail Away I was hooked. Still listen to them. Check out Tommy Shaw's Fooling Yourself with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. Amazing, so well done. You will be glad you did.

My very first concert was STYX. I was 13 and my mom wouldn’t let me go so I snuck out the window to go see them. It was sooo worth it. I saw them in 1980. I cried when I heard LADY. Happy Anniversary ❤❤🎉🎉

My first concert was Styx also but it was in January of 1978 (Grand Illusion tour) and I was almost 13. My sister took me cuz I loved both bands at that show. The opening band was Legs Diamond.

In these days there were no in ear monitors or direct into the board sound. All amps, all loud and it could never be loud enough.... and then you have 3 vocalist trying to harmonize with enough power to cut through the loudness. It is just amazing.

Styx has an extremely broad field of talent and styles. It is literally a band you cannot nail down. You can hear 3 different Styx songs and never know they were the same bands.

@@stephanierosen7737Styx today does NOT sound the same to a trained ear. They’ve never sounded quite right without Dennis and they never will. Like Journey, without their original lead singer, they’re just a glorified cover band. At least on the songs Dennis sang lead on. Tommy still sounds great and that thing he did with that youth orchestra was epic!

Dennis wrote this for his wife, but through his lyrics and music, he in turn wrote a song for all us guys who truly fell in love with our "lady's". This was my wife and I's wedding dance. Which , oddly enough, was our first dance at an after football game dance our freshman year of high school. That was 50 years ago, and she's still "My Lady".

The album version is magical in it's own right as it makes a more gradual transition from the piano to the full band. You're able to sort of hear each instrument coming in, and appreciate the musicianship of the band much more. It's fantastic.

One thing that Styx and Scorpions have in common are 2 great different songs called Lorelei. You really need to hear both. But DDY has always been one of those singers you have sung all their songs over the decades and actually helped develop a persons vocals. Check out Castle Walls, Come Sail Away, The Grand Illusion, Desert Moon, Babe, The Best Of Times, Don't Let It End. Such amazing songs, what an incredible vocalist.

She has explained in the past that she grew up in a household which primarily listened to classical and religious music, plus a little country music. Then she went to a couple of conservatories where she intensively studied opera before going on the international opera circuit.

I graduated from high school in the early seventies and lived in that area of Chicago. I knew Vince DePaul and listened to Styx when they were unknown and playing locally. It was a great time to be in Chicago musically. Chicago Transit Authority, which later became the band Chicago, played at my 8th grade graduation party. Good times...

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I barely notice the imperfections that would be tuned out today. To me it just sounds so good it doesn’t even matter. Love how they started out slow and pivoted to Rocker very quickly ❤.

Styx is a band where the vocals are absolutely at the forefront. The perfect band for you to take a deep dive into. You will LOVE them! Their vocal harmonies when they sang live blew away the competition, especially because they have 3 lead singers and songwriters. I recommend "Paradise", "Show Me The Way", "Best of Times", "Suite Madame Blue" and "Ballerina" with Dennis playing "Clair de Lune" as an intro....stunning. All Dennis songs. You will be very impressed with Tommy Shaw's voice too. Happy Anniversary!

One of the best voices in the business! Along with Steve Walsh of Kansas, Rik Emmett of Triumph, Burton Cummings of the Guess Who and Klaus Meine of Scorpions. Basically, the forgotten song that put Styx on the map and their map is huge. Yes the released version is better. Not many bands have 3 lead singers. About time you did Styx one of my fav of all time.

My older cousins grew up with members of Styx way back in day in the burbs of Chicago. They aren't the same without Dennis but the only thing constant about change is change itself. Simply one of the best voices ever. Glad you have been introduced to it. So much brilliance to be found. The real scary thing is, he sounds just as stunning today at the age of 76!!

1972, Racine, Wisconsin, a high school gym. I heard Styx as they broke through. We had no idea. The next few days the local STL stations started playing this 24x7. 05:26 is the start of this legend. Most rock singers in the 1970s had the high range singing. Dennis is a truly talented singer, pianist, writer and showman.

Well, as a lifelong Styx fan and Racine resident, I don't recall them playing in town in 1972. They played Memorial Hall downtown sometime in the summer of '75, paid like $4 to get in! What school do you think they played, Park, Horlick or Case?

Dennis DeYoung is considered one of the keyboard greats of the rock era, which is saying a lot. Definitely check out the studio version of this song. And if you want to heat Dennis on a pipe organ, listen to I’m Okay by Styx. Go to the studio version. Quite impressive and a great message too. As for first power ballad it might be possible that Harry Nillson’s version of Badfinger’s song Without You might edge Styx out by a few months.

The piano entrance to this version is excellent, but you really need to hear Lady in its original studio album version. I saw Styx and Foreigner live in 2006. Both bands were incredible and their voices were still on peak performance shape. It was an incredible experience!!!

Dennis DeYoung hasn't sung with Styx since 1999. That (also )terrific voice you heard with STYX in 2006 was Canadian Lawrence Gowan. He's been with STYX ever since Dennis' departure.

I believe it's Tommy's vocal in the higher register (JY is generally lower) which changes the dynamics of the chorus. It's quite different than JC's original vocals. Not bad, just different. Definitely check out the album version. Also, I believe Dennis is, at least originally, self-taught on the piano. He has definitely gotten really good!

Bought a ticket to see Dennis DeYoung solo tour in 2007. Upstate NY in an old restored Vaudeville theatre. Merchant shops added to the side of the building that I was exploring as I'd arrived very early. Accidentally found an entrance to the balcony and waltzed in, as I have a history working as a stagehand at the opera. Soundcheck in progress and made my way downstairs after a song or two. Walked up to the stage and offered praise and admiration and was greeted warmly and with respect by Dennis. After the show, I "joined" local radio winners for a greenroom 'meet&greet'. Again, with all present, Dennis was a good host and a great experience for all.

Happy Anniversary! My wife and I made our honeymoon allow time for us to see the Styx 1996 Return to Paradise Theater concert. Dennis DeYoung is not just an unbelievable singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and concert MC, he is a genuinely good human. When my wife and I were raising money for our local mental health association that served my late brother, Dennis sent us a ton of signed stuff for an auction. We took our autistic daughter to see him when she was three years old. She stims on Mr. Roboto and Show Me The Way repeatedly. Dennis was the reason I played keyboards in a rock band for the first time, because I could play The Best of Times on piano and the synthesizer parts to Suite Madame Blue. You are entering the rabbit hole of some unbelievable music. Happy Anniversary!

Lady is one of those early "power ballads" - something that would become more popular in the late 70s and into the 80s. I love the change in tempo - starting slow then launching into full rock.

I was lucky enough to meet him on his birthday when he came through town, and I told him this true story. I said, “When I was a little kid, I used to wish that I would get really sick so I could Make a Wish and meet you.” 😂 I’m glad it did not have to come to that.

Bear in mind that those who study classical music have 900 years worth to become familiar with. From Gregorian chant, the origins of opera, development of now familiar instruments, Medieval, Baroque, Classical, Romance, Modern. Perhaps 100,000 individual works. It's easy to miss what most of us have only heard on the radio in a few decades.

Glad you finally checked these guys out. They were the hottest band on the planet in 1978-1979. I just saw them live with the rest of the gray haired rockers and I was stunned with how good their vocals still were. Dennis DeYoung is long gone from the band, but Tommy Shaw was still crushing his high notes at the age of 69, and they have one of the best drummers in the world in Todd Sucherman. Such a great catalog of songs and a great performance!

Todd and Steve Smith are great friends and have some collaborative fun on various Drum Shows. Todd's dad was a Dr. in Chicago and he played at night in jazz bands. Young Todd started lessons at about 2 to 3 years old.

I've seen them 40 plus times and never miss a shot at seeing them, and they have the most steady line up over the last 20 years and it shows. DeYoung took them down a road that lead to no where. Tommy Shaw is still kicking it as he approaches 70 and JY is steady as a rock. Rock critics be damned. They were and are great.

I refuse to see the assholes that kicked him out when it was HIS band! Dennis is great without them and I would go again. I don't need to hear babyface egos songs! I seen this band in a live show right after they came out with this album. It was in a small town of about 9k people for a graduation class of I think about 1972 to 1974?? I know they was like hey we can play for much more now then when we book this show but they did it anyway and really put on a great show for us. Much respect for them doing it.

I say this with all sincerity, you absolutely, positively, and with out fail have to review "Come sail away". The transitions alone will blow your mind. FYI, I love your expertise in describing all the techniques that most of us never appreciate. It never fails to add a whole new layer to the music and it makes revisiting these songs a renewed joy to listen to again.

The album this song came from is Styx 2,written BEFORE Tommy Shaw joined the band. John Curelewski was in the band. John was in the first 5 Styx albums as a song writer, guitarist and singer.

From what I get from this Kirk wants you to know you are his "Lady" and this song so masterfully done by Styx says this in a subtle but big way. In not so many words he dearly loves his wife. Elizabeth you are my best most favorite reviewer of music and song because of your training and experience. I have seen you laugh and I have seen you cry depending on the music or song being played. This makes you human because music is a powerful medium that brings so many emotions. I grew up with these guys listening to their music. I am 65 now but it still brings it all back hearing this. I will say one last thing. I am as straight as an arrow but at this time in his life Tommy Shaw was a beautiful talented man. Seeing Styx live back in the seventies was a event remained a fan since the first performance I attended almost forty-five years ago. The quintessential touring band for a period Styx owned FM hard rock radio with a sting of hits. The Grand Illusion was the breakthrough many of the earlier albums are ignored but have some real gems. Last saw Styx perform around a year ago as a happy retiree in Florida, memories of my youth. With the original band members in their seventies the lineup is bound to change. Had the opportunity to meet the band members way back during a meet-n-greet. Remember John Panozzo and his brother Chuck Panozzo who is one of the kindest people I ever met.

This song is one of my all-time favorites. When it first came out I was a very young man dating my first true love and I dedicated this song to her. Unfortunately, we ended up going our separate ways as we both moved on for college and separate lives as happens. Besides DeYoung's voice... the piano is angellic and makes the intro of this song as drop-dead-gorgeous as it is.

Styx is my all-time favorite band. "Grand Illusion" is my all-time favorite album. "Lady" always hits me so hard. And how it ramps up and up and up to the dramatic finish is amazing.

Styx is one talent packed band. Dennis De Young's voice is unmistakable. Guitarist Tommy Shaw also shared lead vocal duties on plenty of songs. Although he sang many of the bangers, he could do the ballads as well. Crystal Ball is a classic.
