"slam" would lump this shit-- with it's crushing bdowns, fast-twitch muscle fiber/all-ankle double kick patterns, and shredstick operation so dexterous and clean that you can't help but wonder just how much of that shit was quick punched in when it was recorded-- in with other slam bands and (although there are some monsters in that genre, no hate over here) the similarities between this and bands like Thy Art starts and ends with the vocals. this shut, vocally, it does hella remind me of more "slammy" vox like cj, and even correlation with shit like Chelsea Grin (though the names of any of the 534fgdsvbjuu77i85646 vocalists they've had currently escapes me), or even whitechapel Phil isn't THAT far of a stretch, in terms of timber, cadence, and technique. so I get what you mean, for sure. BUT you just can't lump the instrumentation in with it, it's just not a fair or accurate depiction of the chops/shred delivering a sonic haymaker to your guts that Aaron and whatever the other dudes name from infant annihilator is are capable of. I think anyone who reads that and then goes on to think this is what slam sounds like has been effectively made dumber by that comparison, and I'm really not trying to be a dick about it, but it is what it is. misinforming people who will repeat that shit elsewhere and create further people who are wrong about shit and need to be corrected. And, because of the nature of what we're talking about, that's really any normal person reading these comments who isn't balls deep in, or well-versed in the art/fun that hyper-specificity can offer when you label a metal band with one of these super niche sub-genres that only other metalheads will truly "get". And metal IS really the only style where that kind of thing works so well (that I've seen) when it comes to either: 1. describing the sound of, or 2. ascribing a genre label to any extreme/heavy/brutal music. There's not many other things in music, if there's any at all, that I can even think of that any other kind of over-complication and added verbosity of stylistic descriptions can do like metal sub-genres can do iin regards to being able to nail down, and accurately communicate via text, the exact "sound" a band has. I'm just putting this out there, and I cooked be hella, hella wrong. but, for some context and to give a little credibility to what I'm saying I'll just put it out there that I HAVE been a musician since before I can even remember, for one. I started piano at age 2, drumset at age 5, can read and write rhythmic and melodic dictation (without tabs), treble or bass cleff or whatever the fuck those two slashes at the beginning of percussion sheet music is called, I also have pieces of paper from two well known music schools saying I should kinda know some shit about some shit if I actually paid attention in class. For someone who considers himself a drummer, and really trying not to come off sounding like I think I know everything because I most certainly do NOT... BUT, that said, I do have damn good ear training and pitch I'm proud of, that I worked really hard at to get, where I think I have (I'm not gonna say perfect pitch because that's a bullshit ass term you can use to describe robots and that's it) learned the ability to tell you what note is playing if you choose any note on any stringed instrument tuned on a diatonic scale at 440hz (including piano) with about 98% accuracy, I can tell you "oh that's a C4" or Bb5, G#7, etc.. you get the point. just to keep me grounded, I should point out that if you use wind instruments I'd fail that same test embarrassingly bad, like probably worse than if someone was to just blindly guess. seriously. but, I also play about half a dozen instruments at, what I would say, is a "proficient" level, and I played percussion at a professional level for basically all of my 20s, and when I got into my early 30s and stopped playing music, I had a grip of domestic touring experience playing in bands in these exact scenes, SO if you wanna be like "yooooo thats slam", I get it. and I would bet you're probably not someone who's learned music from an instrumentalist point of view, you're probably a singer, or neither singer nor musician, just a fan of heavy music if you think that this is "technical deathcore" or "post-melodic techdeath" or some shit, you probably play guitar, bass, or drums, and don't really pay that much attention to vocals on your first listen to new music. and, when everyone else is singing along to the music, or you're listening to it in your car, you're probably the motherfucker that has the timing memorized of every fill, every guitar squeal, and are vocalizing those parts to yourself under your breath like "digguh-digguh djent djent yap yap yaaapppp widdlywiddlywahhhhhh BLEGH! BREEEE". and that's not too say there aren't exceptions to those generalisations I just made, but I'll tell you what, I sure as fuckin shit know that I'd be comfortable betting a pretty large sum of money on the vast majority of people who would answer either way, if you could collect the data objectively and accurately somehow, it'd align with what I just said about how they listen to and hear music. but that only works if we all agree, or most of us agree, on the standards we use to determine this shit. and when you got dudes out here telling people that THIS is anything other than extreme shred/technical deathcore with slam style vocals, you're effectively perpetuating misinformation and stupidity in the community and I, for one, would kindly ask you not to do that shit. again I don't wanna be a dick, here, but because you're making your bullshit opinion, which is wrong, known on such a public and readily consumable forum, for all to see, it's hindering progress and, ultimately, if you retard progression long enough, you wind up with some dumbass motherfuckers believing some dumbass shit. and that sucks. so I guess my point in all this is, like, we all have already agreed on what these words mean in context with describing metal sub-genres. don't go reinventing the wheel to be an octagon, because we're already using a circle(pit) instead, and that shit already works way, way more smooth.
