Cody, would you do a video on Carbon Monoxide? Perhaps demonstrate ways in which it can be formed and how to detect it. People still die from it every year. It would be cool to warn people of it's dangers. Especially since it's a colourless and odourless gas. Maybe you could take it in another direction and do something interesting with it :)
@patrichausammann
@patrichausammann 6 жыл бұрын
Not a bad idea. But you could also buy a carbon monoxid detector on a PCB and get a suitable Micro Controller too🙄. This things are no more as expensive, as they were some years ago 🤗. But the carbon dioxyd detectores are much more expensive. I have some gas sensors working with a MCR, to get nealy all necessary informations about the air quality. If I am not totally wrong, the carbon dioxid sensors seem to work with some UV-LEDs and some kind of a color or light sensor. I think, I had a look at the scematics and the manual and remember from them. 🐵 🙊 🙉

I would have stopped after the scratch test. Also Cody, you should purchase a synthetic color change sapphire/corundum. I own a half boule of the stuff and this stuff is pretty amazing. It is a cheap alternative to buying alexandrite. In white light the gem will appear blue, and in yellow it will appear deep dark purplish pink. Also I own a green LASER pointer and out of curiosity I tried shining the beam through the gem. The beam turns bright red, as does the entire stone. Very interesting science behind it too. Thanks for the great videos, Cody.

That ruby looked like candy. At 9 on the Moh's scale, it would be hard candy in the finest sense.
@MGSLurmey
@MGSLurmey 6 жыл бұрын
Remember that the Moh's scale rates a mineral's *hardness,* not *toughness.* Hardness is how resistant a material is to abrasion. Toughness is how resistant a material is to fracturing under stress. Diamond, for example, is very hard but not very tough. It is fairly brittle when compared to something like steel, but steel is not as hard as diamond. That corundum may be incredibly brittle, similar to rock candy, but also very hard, able to scratch steel.

Hey Cody. Wikipedia says, that natural diamond has more than 5 times the thermal conductivity of copper - 2200 W/(K*m) vs ~401 W/(K*m) for copper. Monocrystalline isotopically pure diamond (99,9% C12) has thermal conductivity of 3320 W/(K*m). As far as I'm concerned, the latter value is higher than graphene, and highest known for a solid material at room temperature.

when you determine the volume of an object using the water replacement method you propably should use something you can lay your object neatly unto instead of just a wire. just so you get rid of any inaccuracy from bending the length of the wire at all. not that big of a deal, just something i thought seeing this
@bellowphone
@bellowphone 6 жыл бұрын
I suspect that the published density value for diamond is calculated for a clear gemstone quality diamond. Your stone has inclusions and impurities, which probably accounts for the slightly lower density. Also the surface is pocked with cavities which may retain air bubbles underwater, giving you an inflated volume reading.

Did you rule out SiC (moissanite)? Silicon carbide has a density of 3.21g/cm3, so even closer to your reading and a thermal conductivity slightly lower than diamond, but higher than copper, and it's hardness is 9.5, which would also have scratched the ruby..
@MsHojat
@MsHojat 6 жыл бұрын
C Lau, as far as I know Silicon carbide is very rare outside of synthetic production, and pieces like that might not even exist, let alone sell for 120$. I could be mistaken though. It might just be solid crystals of SiC that are rare (just like larger diamond crystals)
@clau2272
@clau2272 6 жыл бұрын
Mshojat. Natural Moissanite crystal is very rare, but non-gem SiC is used extensively as an industrial abrasive, and also in steel making where a lot of it is recovered as slag: this could just be a raw chunk.. Diamond is pure carbon and quite conductive as is; SiC is a semiconductor and usually covered with oxide, so would be only slightly conductive or non-conductive, so this could be an easy test..

When you measure the volume of the stone, the water level raised slightly compared to when you tared out the wire. That means that slightly more of the wire was submerged during the proper measurement than when you tared it, and your density measurement would me off slightly. It would explain why you measure it slightly less dense than the expected value...

@tehwubbles
@tehwubbles 6 жыл бұрын
yeah, but you're not finding the volume of the object, and you're not removing any water to find a difference in mass of water. Frankly I don't understand it either. Seems like the wire's normal force should be counteracting the stone's weight completely
@marcaxe
@marcaxe 6 жыл бұрын
The stone will have some buoyancy when submerged, so the wire will only be supporting the weight of the stone minus the buoyant force, the buoyant force (being equal to the weight of water displaced) will have an equal and opposite reaction as measured by the scales.
@tehwubbles
@tehwubbles 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, so the water is pushing down against the stone, which can't move. Makes sense. Thanks
@lelcat8414
@lelcat8414 6 жыл бұрын
No, the water is pushing up against the stone, which means the water is pushing down against the scales with the same force (plus the total weight of the water). The wire provides just enough support to the stone to allow it to remain suspended in the water - equivalent to an object with equal density to the water being dropped in unsupported. If the wire pull up with more force, the stone "floats" up, less and the stone sinks. So the weight on the scales represents the mass the stone would have if the stone were the density of idle fish.

Carbonado. You mentioned clarici which is very poisonous . In the geological lab where I worked, TBE was used to separate diamonds from quartz and other smaller SG minerals. One has to be careful as diamonds, especially small ones can float off in water because of the diamond's greasy lustre and surface tension.

So doing a quick google search what you have is called "Bort" and should have a slightly lower density to a pure diamond. From what I understand is that its a large amount of small diamond crystals held together with some quartz or other crystalline material. It can range from being a iron oxide filled yellow mess that is often from the Congo to a pale silvery crystal that you have.

So if I understand right, the water jet guys ended up using diamond substrate to cut your diamond?

What does the PCD setting on the jet mean then? Is it just the velocity?
@yaksher
@yaksher 6 жыл бұрын
@Nick Combs I think it's speed, since the number next to it was a number that seemed to range from 0 to 1 and was 1 for water.

the problem with waterjet is that the thing is a poly crystal, so it possible it was torn apart because connections between crystalls weren't good enough. Still interesting result. beyond press had a diamond for pressing, would be interesting to see if such a crystall can be defeated and put on wall of shame.

This isn't even a Minecraft reference it appears... Diamond in Minecraft is entirely blue, not with blue specks, and is only found between y levels 0 to 16, nothing to do with a -40...

That's a Carbonado (black diamond). Is less denser than a diamond, that's why you got those numbers. Look it up.

my guess is it's actually carborundum , or silicon carbide, it's a 9.5 on moh's with an average density of 3.21, and it seems more likely in my opinion that that is what you bought.

I totally think that a water jet could for sure "cut" that. It might not cut it _straight_ but I still think that it would certainly break, since it's not a pure, "perfect" diamond, but rather full of cracks, holes/bubbles, and contaminants.

Please , try to extract gallium metal from LEDs , they should contain gallium arsenide or galium phosphide , I've never seen this before on KZfaq , so it should be very interesting , sure it will be a very small amount , but still cool as a proof of concept 😊

OK it took awhile for me to understand what is happening to the scale when the rock was lowered into the water. I understood the whole density/volume thing but where did the extra weight come from when there is the same amount of water in the beaker? Basically it is the buoyant force acting on the rock being translated to the scale. The buoyant force being equal to the amount of the water displaced. SO even though the rock is suspended not all of its weight is being supported by the wire some of that weight is supported by the water and that is what shows up on the scale. (This may be obvious to most but it's been decades since I took basic physics.)

If it is a diamond it is a very low grade diamond the kind they use for industrial use for grinding and cutting applications.
