Aaah, this is a very interesting conversation. I remember that before 2020, I was in corporate, and I struggled so much because I was just not confident. I was so frustrated at the time I even started therapy, and the therapist coached me into public speaking. At the time, I wanted to enter academia as a lecturer, but I couldn't speak. I took public speaking courses during COVID-19. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am now in academia, growing so much, and all of this happened in less than 3 years. I am that girl now in meetings. 😜

Such an important conversation. Had a terrible experience during my internship because I just was not asserting myself at all! In meetings I’d just keep quiet and only raise concerns/questions to the person afterwards. I became invisible and overlooked. My work was brilliant but I couldn’t sell it and I suffered the consequences. I’m thankful that I am at the beginning of my career and have the grace of time to attend to the issue and work on it now before I suffer the consequences.

I'm a Venda lady and it's natural for me to always use English because not a lot of people know Tshivenda. I've been ridiculed and hated a LOT for speaking English and speaking up at work and at school. Whether we like it or not, English is the medium of communication in any professional setting. If you don't k now the language, don't hate those who do, they can teach you if you ask nicely :)

This is the best message I had to hear, we get to work and don’t speak in meetings and complain about the people that speak the most, very bad habit, instead of complaining start learning his to speak in meetings because the people who speak more gets more recognised.

Thank you so much for the conversation! I grew up being such a shy and timid person. Never did I imagine myself in spaces where I needed to show the bravery of an activist and voice out my opinions. My career as an intern gave me the platform to interact more with people; and instantly my personality changed completely once I started. I love conversation and hosting topics of interest. I don't mind sharing what's on my mind regardless of how stupid it may be to the next person. I believe the more you interact; the easier communication becomes. I am simply a confident introvert, all attributed to challenging myself to speak out.

Ladies, this is so in season. I recently had a really close loved one pass and was asked to speak at her funeral. I was terrified. I can't even explain how terrified I was. Really, it wasn't the speaking itself that terrified me, I was nervous about people knowing that I am nervous. My voice also starts shaking and my hands tremble when I'm nervous so my fears were that people would see that and know I'm scared. And I didn't know what to do to make it stop. If I knew how to do that, I think public speaking would scare me less. Anyways, I didn't do the speech because the mics weren't working and I was worried that I wouldn't be heard. It felt very childish to be so afraid to do something that it stops you from doing something that matters more. I left feeling like I need to sort this out, ngeke. Otherwise I'll be limited in my ability to show up for my loved ones.

One thing I love about your guest is that she doesn’t come across as an extrovert. This debunks the notion that only extroverts excel at public speaking. Actually extroverts are less believable to me because they sound as though they’re delivering a pitch that they give to everyone that comes their way. A soft spoken person is more believable and relatable.

I came to learn this the hard way. Yes, your work will speak for you to a point but after that, you must speak out. Your presence must be felt. The most mediocre motor mouths move up the ladder because they have a way with words. They speak even when they really don’t have to. In the end, they get noticed and are usually in line for that promotion.

This video has open my mind up, especially the parent training - in a household where elders opinion are more loud compared to yours you can fill small in your own world which effects your development but this really give me an advice to forgive my current and previous self in communication. Knowing that I am normal and not the only one going through this yet working on my articulation - the more practice the more competent and the more confident I become.

Brilliant advice from a brilliant mind. The first time I met Vanessa as ABSA, she was speaking in public and that is how I was introduced to her brilliance. Never would I have thought that public speaking was a challenge.

I stumbled upon this video yesterday but I'm glad I did, very useful tips. Thank you ladies, I'm clicking replay. By the way, there's something about Vanessa Bukasa that reminds me of Princess Diana, but the more confident version of Princess Diana. Thanks for the great tips, ladies, be blessed. Thank you ladies. I admit i have been suffering from lack of confidence when it comes to public speaking and any time iam given a chance in a function i always judge myself afterwards and look more into the messes rrather than the rights. This is so helpful, iam going to implement most of your shares especially that one of forgiving myself first. I will consider a coach probably. And you are all so beautiful

Vanessa has herself a new client. I surely need the coaching. So much so, I beg everyone to not ask me to speak in public. I am a good storyteller /narattor however, my voice be shaking like i am in Alaska wearing a bikini. I will ugly cry if you make me stand infront of an audience. The fact that i have to speak and everyone must listeb to me??? I'd run.

I really loved this episode. As a passionate public speaker, I do believe that voicing it out professionally gets you to another level. However, this works out in companies where there is a solid culture for its Human capital. Sometimes confidently articulating some issues or suggestions in some companies can land differently to a company that doesn't have a culture of growth. However this was enjoyable
