In this series finale, we travel from the tourist hotspot of Castle Combe to the market town of Chipping Sodbury, where we then travel north to link back up with our travel companion Herbert Evans in Chedworth. We move through Shipton Sollars and Shipton Oliffe, stop off at Hampnett along the A40 and finish our circuit just outside Oxford, where we began in Episode 1.
Highways and Byways in Oxford and the Cotswolds audiobook is coming soon!

Please don't apologise. I am completely familiar with the strength of feeling this kind of thing generates and, as I mentioned, I do have some sympathy. In a way I have exploited the poor lady who, I am absolutely sure, just said what she beleives, because there is so much zany intolerance around I thought I would make a comment on it. I may live to regret it but I sort of feel it's probably a good idea if we all chill a little.

Having seen what can happen to this sort of out-of-the-way place when tourism dries up and the people show hostility to "outsiders", one wonders if she would have the same attitude if given a taste of that possible outcome. Of course it's only one person, but human nature focuses on the negative and it only takes a few bad reviews online or from some megastar's Twitter comment for word to spread. On the other hand I've also seen what happens to everyday life when tourism and commercialization - and all the so called modern progress that brings - takes over. It can be a fine line sometimes, and I sympathize with that too. However folks like TCE are clearly the antithesis of the awful tourist type (and interest) and one would think that explanation would be enough for her.

Oh, that's so sad about the church and its treasures. When we visited, the lady volunteer and her daughter were delightful. They were prepared for anything, talked with my family members for a long time about the church, the village and recent trips we'd all taken (she had run her daughter's things up to Uni so that she could go up by train a few days later). They offered tea and biscuits to all visitors, this was during the period of mourning for HMQ so there had been lots of people in to sign the Book of Condolence.

Watching from across the pond in the states has given me an amazing appreciation for the region and it has become my #1 travel bucket list destination. Your knowledge of, and passion for the Cotswolds is evident in every episode; there could be no greater champion for this amazing place. Here's hoping you continue to tell stories about new locations--possibly a bit further south perhaps, say Cheddar Gorge? Would love to hear your take on that area. Thanks again.

Tourism certainly beats people coming and never leaving like in NW Arkansas. They came in like locusts, have torn most of our historic houses down. They are extremely unfriendly and backstabbing. And...we locals are seen as trash and used as sharecroppers. We work hard and can't afford to live here anymore and have no money to leave either. Count your blessings that you only have tourists!!!

I pray that I only ever reflect the love of God through any interactions I have with anyone while at church or elsewhere. If we can't even be kind to people in church, we might need to do some self reflecting. As a Christian, I hope to be a witness to God's love and compassion instead of being rude to people - especially people as well-meaning and genuinely interested in the history of the church as this gentleman.

Robin, your observations are so true. Any places revered for its quaint nature often is doomed to be a magnet for tourism. We experience that here in the States, where quiet places become so commercialized that those who originally inhabited these places have decamped for other less buy areas, leaving nothing behind but a facade, or land for developers to raze everything and build the inevitable townhouses. Exploring these lovely places is delightful if done with taste and reserve; tourist can be rather pushy and loud which I find distasteful. It is a regrettable combination. Don’t get me started on developers……they have come to our village, ripped up the prime farmland for tacky housing. Too bad that little church was so rudely treated. Thanks for sharing!

I can get a bus to Chipping Sodbury but I don't very often. I must do this summer as it's a pretty little town. My Dad always used to say that nearby Old Sodbury was called that because Old Sod was buried there! The Bible translator William Tyndale was the chaplain at the old manor house there and did a lot of his work when he was there as I have read.

@@soukthavoneinsisienmay1188 "we need kindness in the world, not more hate!" Ah the irony and hypocrisy of people of his (and indeed I suspect your) ilk comes through. He is not "kind". He is cruel. He is a hypocrite. He is utterly self-absorbed. He is extremely selfish. He is also extraordinarily stupid. I never want to see him in the UK again and a decent proportion of the population supports that viewpoint. He and his wife should keep their mouths shut and stay away from the UK permanently. That way they will simply be forgotten and fade into irrelevance. Good riddance.

@Soukthavone Insisienmay well then he would do well to keep his mouth shut, keep his wife's mouth shut as well and stay away from the UK. He's got a massive store of negative karma built up for his actions of the past few years. He certainly won't get anywhere near nirvana with his current course. However he is too stupid to realise the consequences of his actions and attitudes. A significant fraction of the UK population despises him now. A direct result of his actions and attitudes of the last few years. If he keeps his mouth shut, keeps his wife's mouth shut and stays away that despising will decrease in intensity as he is simply forgotten about. Given his character and his wife's character he won't pursue that course however. Hence the intensity of disdain for him will continue to increase. I really hope he stays away from the coronation later this year. He really won't like the reception he'll get from a substantial number of people if he does turn up.
